How much or how little do you spend on self care, beauty and grooming?

Obviously going to be different for everyone, but I’m just curious and trying to reset my own perspective. I struggle a bit to justify spending on myself at all.

In a typical month, what would you spend on creams, shampoos, treatments, hair styling, products, etc?

I spend very little, hair is the only regular expense.Hair costs between £90-£120 every 9 weeks.

Face creams I buy when on 3 for 2, but at full price is about £10 max per month, probably less as lasts ages.

I don’t remember the last time I bought makeup, I wear it rarely. The bits I use though I usually ask for as gifts so rarely lay out my own money for it. I like a fairly pricey body scrub but get it as gifts as its £22 a pot.

I use shampoo, conditioner and a hair oil. No other products. Costs about £5 a month I guess.

So probably all in its less than £50 a month and mostly hairdressers.

Gadtown · 02/08/2019 08:29

Not much at all, I cut my own hair, don't wear makeup or perfume, spend maybe a tenner on shampoo and conditioner that lasts a couple of months. My one treat is epsom salt I buy a small bag for the bath every so often

SuzeD29 · 02/08/2019 08:31

Hair extension maintainance £40
Nails 2x month £40
Dermaplaning £40
Massage £60
Make up/hair products etc £25

Do own eye brows, epilate everywhere and don't dye my hair so savings are made there.

So around £205 each month

In a typical month it's under £10. Just basic toiletries, shampoo, conditioner, soap, etc.

Maybe once or twice a year I'll have my hair done, and for a special occasion I might have a manicure/pedicure, but that's not even a yearly thing, more like one every couple of years.

Itwouldtakemuchmorethanthis · 02/08/2019 08:32

Bar of soap, Aussie shampoo from the supermarket, deodorant. Dh gives me perfume every other year. My hair is long so easy to trim myself. So this year pretty much nothing!

I often think about having fake nails done but the shop is very smelly. I have no aversion to beauty-products, I just have very little time and things I like doing more.

Rainbowknickers · 02/08/2019 08:35

I only buy the basics like shampoo toothpaste etc
I get my hair cut for £17 every 8 weeks (I’m a trained hairdresser so do the fam for free)
I have tons of make up already so I’m not buying more
Now clothes on the other hand...

soupmaker · 02/08/2019 08:40

Not a lot. Used to spend a lot on high end products but saw the light and stopped.

Use Aldi skincare products, do my own manicures and pedicures. Have a pal who threads my eyebrows. So that keeps cost down. Use tanning drops in moisturiser which works out way cheaper.

Buy expensive shampoo as have white hair, but it lasts for ages as use it sparingly. Wear perfume every day but get it for birthdays and Christmas.

I spend less than £20 a month.

QueenImprov · 02/08/2019 08:41

Eyebrows threading & tinting - £13
Make up probably works out at £10 per month, the only high end product I wear is mascara and i usually get nice make up for Xmas/birthdays which lasts me ages
Hair cut/colour every 3 months at around £60
Basic toiletries probably £10/month
So probably around £50/60 month in total

Every so often treat myself to LVL lashes or nails for special occasions or holidays, wish I could afford to do that more!

notinmynamemate · 02/08/2019 08:43

Just basic moisturiser, shampoo, soap from asda. Makeup as need it - but do get stuff from urban decay or benefit for that. But buy very infrequently as only wear makeup if going out. Hair cut every few months costs £30. So very little.

LoafofSellotape · 02/08/2019 08:45

I honestly thing toners and the like are just a massive con! How many men use toners and yet their skin is fine

Plenty of men use skin care products, even my lumberjack type/ no nonsense dh will use some moisturiser as his skin needs it. Some men have great skin just as some women have great skin without using anything.

Wrt toner, that alone has made the biggest difference to my very sensitive skin, just adding that to my very basic skin care routine has helped my skin no end.

Hair- cut every 10 week £48
Colour 3x a year £98

Skin/makeup - £20-30 per month

Never have facials or nails done etc so no beauty treatments.

firstimemamma · 02/08/2019 08:45

Hair wash and trim every couple of months with quick blow dry £25

No shower gel, face wash or anything like that - just cheap soap.

Lots of my toiletries have been replaced by coconut oil which comes in a glass jar in an attempt to reduce my waste. I use it for lip balm, night cream, eye-make up remover and more. A big jar costs around £20 but it lasts ages and as it's so versatile it's worth every penny. It's also a great baby moisturiser!

To wash my hair I use a refillable bottle and coconut oil if I want to use conditioner. Only wash my hair twice a week. I use ghds but they are 8 years old and still work great!

I have a Venus razor and shave 1-2 times a week.

Never got my nails done by another person but do like keeping them neat and short with nail varnish on. I own about 6 bottles of high street nail varnish.

I have a fairly modest make-up collection. I wear a bit every day and most of it's high street stuff with a couple of high end treats.

Never done anything with my eye brows, I'm happy with the way they look naturally.

Sorry that I haven't been able to give you a price estimate but I honestly don't think I'd be able to! I'd like to think I don't spend that much on myself and my appearance. Smile

Sunshine196 · 02/08/2019 08:55

I probably average about £30 per month. I get my hair done regularly & my nails & eyebrows done before hols. I purchase decent face cream but other than that I sort of forget! I’d love to be the type of person to have a regular beauty regime but it’s just not on my radar for some reason although I do enjoy a nice pamper session when I have one

AwdBovril · 02/08/2019 08:55

I probably spend an average of £20-25 a month. I buy any makeup from TK Maxx (use it rarely so it lasts ages). I dye my eyebrows & lashes, don't really use mascara or brow pencil much any more. I cut my own hair, & don't dye it. Shampoo again from TK Maxx, & as my hair is so short it lasts ages. I don't really get anything "done", it's all DIY. Cheap razors & a pot of (men's) shaving cream.
However my skincare routine is the main outlay... I have really tricky skin. I buy expensive products which last ages. I probably spend about £200 per year on skincare, & £40-80 ish on everything else. Am currently contemplating spending £50 odd on a pack of Salux exfoliating wash towels.

Hadn't even thought about perfume...

Thatnovembernight · 02/08/2019 08:57

I just did a rough calculation and it’s around £15 a month for skincare, haircuts and make-up.

ExpletiveDelighted · 02/08/2019 08:58

Maybe £50, including haircuts and a couple of gel manicures a year (summer holidays and Christmas). Might buy one item of make-up and one of skincare a month, not high-end brands.

RoseMartha · 02/08/2019 09:00

£10 a month

Doodleoodleday · 02/08/2019 09:03

I think about £200. I get gel nails on fingers a and toes, eye lash extensions and my hair dyed.

These are expensive however the only thing I wear on my face is suncream and very light makeup so those costs are very low. It also means my morning routine takes 2 mins. Oh and I use astral moisturiser which is very cheap.

Beautiful3 · 02/08/2019 09:06

£10 per month goes on myself. That's a box of hair dye and my favourite shampoo.

PsychotriaElata · 02/08/2019 09:12

I spend less on certain items, more on others. That is mainly because I think a lot of the beauty treatments are a complete rip off.

I used to have £80 facials once a month, now I do my own after buying a face steamer and I do a better job of it.

I used to have mani/pedis but now I do my own and do a better, thorough job of it. I have sent money on decent base and top coats and Footners though.

Spray tan - do my own fake tan if needed.

Eyelashes - used to pay £120 for initial lashes then £35 other week. They looked OK but absolutely wreck your lashes. I also think it is a really tacky look.

Makeup - I buy really decent stuff (Chanel, NARS etc.) but I don't use a lot of it so it lasts ages.

Face - This is where most of my money is spent. I have the full range of a really decent Retinol A based organic brand. I also have a few other things that I like from other companies that I use too. I have cleansed, toned and moisturised my skin every day since I was 16 and my skin looks good for it. I've just bought a NuFace.

Clothes - not that interested in clothes.

I reckon I spend £100 a month on average on everything.

PsychotriaElata · 02/08/2019 09:13

Forgot hair - I get it cut and coloured every 4 months but do treatments at home which cost me £10 which cost £250 in a salon and I do a better job of it.

Daffodil2018 · 02/08/2019 09:14

Pre maternity leave:
£360 on my hair every three months (Blush)
£50 a month on gel manicure & pedicure
Occasionally £10 getting my eyebrows threaded
Bikini wax £30 every couple of months
Probably about £40 a month on make up and toiletries

My hair was the main expense because my hairdresser is £££ and I get a full head of highlights each time.

Now I am on maternity leave I spend diddly squat! Which is lucky as I have no income. Have had one haircut in 6 months which was a tenth of the price of my usual place.

Not sure I'll be able to justify going back to my old ways even once I am back at work again. I'll be spending hundreds a month on nursery fees for a start!

daisypond · 02/08/2019 09:19

Virtually nothing. Shampoo and conditioner. I dye my own hair with semi permanent dye. Rarely wear makeup. Never had treatments. Never had my nails done. Never been to a beauty salon. I buy moisturiser, that’s about it. I cut my own hair. It looks nice, honest!

PamelaTodd · 02/08/2019 09:33

It’s really interesting to see the range of budgets, approaches and philosophies. Quite fancy a good unicorn licking now you mention it Grin

Chilledout11 · 02/08/2019 09:33

I tint my brows myself and only get my hair cut there times a year (£30) and sometimes colour it myself

I do get regular shellac (20) and other than that maybe spend 10 a month on bits and pieces. I wear make up most days and maybe use birthday money to buy nice foundation and perfume but happy to use essence mascara etc

H2OH20Everywhere · 02/08/2019 09:34

About £5 a month if that. Shampoo, and bar soap for washing. Toothpaste. Facewash. They'll all last a few months.

Friend cuts my hair. Never wear makeup.
