How much or how little do you spend on self care, beauty and grooming?

Obviously going to be different for everyone, but I’m just curious and trying to reset my own perspective. I struggle a bit to justify spending on myself at all.

In a typical month, what would you spend on creams, shampoos, treatments, hair styling, products, etc?

Haircut/colour £60 every 6 weeks
LVL £40 every 6 weeks
Gel nails/toes £40 every month
Gym membership £50 every month
Make up/products approx £30 every month

Sunnysidegold · 02/08/2019 09:52

@fenellaMaxwell I think we need to know the £1.99 miracle hair product!

I have really cut back over the past ten years or so as I was buying new stuff as I was sucked in by advertising products. I now have a few staple products that I love and don't switch from.

Hair - half head of highlights and cut from training school every ten weeks is 35 pounds and the colour is fab.

Skin - I use suoerdrug hot cloth natural radiance cleanser and Garnier micellar water. Use a suoerdrug natural radiance exfoliator in the am. These are cheap to start with but often BOGOF or buy one get one half price.

I use Nivea Q10 night cream but buy it in savers as it's only four quid there. Day moisturiser is sometimes an expensive one I ask for my birthday or some L'Oréal.

Makeup - I love max factor miracle touch foundation, nars orgasm blush, no7 stay perfect mascara. These are my staple items. Everything else is usually quite mid range stuff. Recently discovered kiko which had some nice little eyeshadows for a great price.

Just had a gel polish for the first time which was twenty quid and I think I might start regular appointments as it makes me feel really put together.
Beauty school for brow wax and moustache threading usually about a fiver. Could actually do this more often but tend to leave it too long. Shampoo is usually from savers so not expensive
I'd say an average of thirty pounds a month.

@Sunnysidegold

L’oreal Kids pear detangling spray and Childs Farm tea tree detangling spray. They’re BRILLIANT!

I don't wear makeup, don't dye my hair, and don't like anything other than clear polish on my nails. So probably ~£170?

£50 for a wax
£50 for a wash and cut
£70 for face masks/moisturisers etc

WashPosh · 02/08/2019 10:16

Shampoo and conditioner £3 on bogof
Shellac mani and pedi £50 (take it off myself)
Lash tint and lift £47 do brows myself
Retinol facial £85 plus tip
90 min Thai massage £65
Leg wax £17
Hair is pricy London colour at £160 every six weeks so £106
Cut is £26 every 8 weeks so £13
Make up is minimal if anything - £10 pcm max. Ask for perfume for birthdays and expensive lovely soaps.

So - £396 it looks like. Though actually DH pays for my hair colour - still quite a lot at £290. I have occasionally had January and February off any treatments and I am terrible at maintaining my own nail shape and look rooty and scruffy. I need all the professional help I can get in the looks department frankly.

Orangecake123 · 02/08/2019 10:35

I buy the cheapest shampoo which might be a £1 a bottle, but this lasts a good 2-4 months.

I no longer buy make up now and only moisturizer when needed so maybe £2.50 but not every month only when it runs out.

But I have a lot of upper back pain so maybe £40-88 on massages depending on how often I go maybe once or twice a month.

I went to the hair dresser and spent £100 Blush- but it's not a regular thing and I haven't gone in years.

Ijustwanttoretire · 02/08/2019 10:40

Almost nothing - hair cut once a year (£12 in local salon) no makeup Pantene shampoo and conditioner....

Ninkaninus · 02/08/2019 10:42

I don’t spend on naice shampoo - we buy ours from Aldi.

I’ve always spent most on shoes, bags and clothing as I have had very good skin. But my face needs help now so I’m going to shift away from clothing/fashion and focus on my face, nails and hair.

Botox will average out at £100pm I guess, plus hair (simple straight cut), nails and lashes at another £100-150, probably.

RainOrSun · 02/08/2019 10:44

Errr, shampoo, conditioner, deodorant, toothpaste. Maybe £10/month.
45 haircut once a quarter. So another £15/month.
Occasional razor blades, nail varnish, moisturiser, footcream. Max £5/month.
£30 total per month?

LeeScoresbysBalloon · 02/08/2019 10:51

Haircuts 4 times a year at £40 a go.

Skincare £40 every 4-6 months

Good shampoo and conditioner £50 every 3-4 months. I no longer dye my hair so I get decent hair products to keep it in good condition.

Make up I replace when it’s run out/past it’s best, so maybe £100 a year.

I don’t tan or get waxed, and I do my own nails and eyebrows.

So works out around £500 per year and just over £40 per month.

abitoflight · 02/08/2019 11:05

Hair every 8-10 weeks £170
Botox £200 every 3-4 months, maybe filler every 18 months - about 200-400?
Other than that, not bought any face cream for years - I'm using up all my old stuff
No pedicures waxing nails

fancynancyclancy · 02/08/2019 11:06

My hair is the most expensive between £150-£180 every 8 weeks. However it looks good for it so I can almost justify that.
Stopped get manicures yrs ago as they always chip. I just do a clear nail polish 90% of the time & paint them if necessary. I do get pedicures in the Summer but maybe 3/4. I have started getting my eyebrows tinted as well as threaded so that’s £20 approx every 5 wks. I’m going to try LVL as I don’t really wear mascara anymore. I’ve not had a facial in ages but want to start again. I’m lucky as i’m fair & don’t have much body hair so only do a bikini wax if going on holiday.
I do like nice products so spend a bit on that however my make up expenditure is tiny as I barely wear any.

Ninkaninus · 02/08/2019 11:21

Oh and I suppose I spend on average about £25pm on make up (but that’s usually on a palette or other fairly big purchase every few months or so).

Perfumes I don’t spend much - I generally buy from M&S and spend 16-25 once or twice a year.

Weatherwaxed · 02/08/2019 11:29

£17 a week on electrolysis for my chin. £30 every 4 or 5 months on a haircut. I buy make up once in a blue moon.
I really really want to be able to spend more on a beauty regime - eyebrows and lip waxes, pedicures, massages, make up etc, but I don't have the money to do so. This thread is making me really sad that I can't do so.

Ironfloor269 · 02/08/2019 11:57

Silicone free conditioner - £3
Boots Curl Creme - £2
Acne aid soap for face - lasts ages so about 50p per month
Aldi bar soap - 50p per bar
Aveeno moisturiser - £7
Aldi body lotion - 30p
Shave legs so cost of a razor

wheresmymojo · 02/08/2019 12:34

Hardly anything.

I use simple eye make up remover (best I've tried including big luxury brands), I get given cleanser for Christmas.

I have good skin genetically so tend to forget to moisturise.

I used to get my nails done but decided it was a waste of money.

I used to have my hair dyed but have decided to embrace the greys as a feminist issue!

So....probably a few pounds a month on average Grin

wheresmymojo · 02/08/2019 12:37

Oh...I wear make up but just replace what has been used up. Probably 2 x mascara per year, 3 x eyebrow pencil, 1 x foundation, 1-2 x cream eyeshadow. That probably bumps me up to £10-15 per month as it's all Bobbi Brown, MAC, Lancôme, etc so not cheap.

Picklypickles · 02/08/2019 12:39

Not much really, I only get the basics like soap/shampoo/conditioner/deodorant/moisturiser and hair curl cream but most of these last weeks/months. I don't get my hair cut often and hardly ever wear make-up, I don't do all of this fake tan/fake eyelashes/fake eyebrows/fake nails nonsense as I don't think any of this stuff matters. As long as I'm clean I'm happy!

JasperTheFriendlyGhost · 02/08/2019 12:43

nails - £20
lashes - £30
brows - £15

That’s all that’s specifically monthly. New shampoo and conditioner and body wash every 6 weeks usually.

Haircut twice a year for a tenner (hairdresser friend)

wheresmymojo · 02/08/2019 12:43

The easiest way for my spending to reduce (if anyone wants to reduce) was to stop buying magazines - I realised I would constantly feel like I needed the 'next thing' from them in terms of skincare and beauty.

I used to spend a fair amount and to be honest - other than the greys there is no difference to how I look now.

My nails sent painted but they are naturally long and rarely break so look perfectly nice and healthy.

sheshootssheimplores · 02/08/2019 12:45

Hardly anything. I’m one of those people who use really low priced cosmetics and face creams but once a year I’ll have a load of fillers for £500.

WalkAwaySugarbear · 02/08/2019 12:56

As a household we average £117pm on toiletries and beauty. Half of that is £40 (hair) £25 (nails).
I spend little on beauty products and make up.

SweetPetrichor · 02/08/2019 12:58

Pretty much nothing. Whatever deodorant is on offer as and when required to restock. Razers, although I don't bother replacing them very often. I don't wear makeup. I wash my face with water. I shave my head with clippers once a week so no hairdresser costs. I wash my entire self with whatever body wash I have...don't need shampoo when your hair is only a few mm long! I'd say I spend around £5 per month on self care, beauty and grooming. Life's too short to spend it worrying about whether I looked plucked and preened.

feelingverylazytoday · 02/08/2019 13:07

Virtually nothing. I cut and dye my own hair (see youtube), use a ladyshaver for any hairy bits and don't wear make up.
The rest is mostly ordinary hygiene stuff, bought from Aldis or poundland. I do use a bit of body lotion, handcream, and cream for my heels otherwise they crack and get sore but thats about it.

ElizaPancakes · 02/08/2019 13:13

Hair styling - £15 every couple of months
Make up - have cut right down and really trying not to spend anything so maybe £5 a month but that’s normally one large annual purchase.
Nails - I paint my own and don’t need to buy any more polish till at least 2050.
Generally washing - we use almond soap £2 for four bars.
Don’t shave, will use epilator for underarms.
Haven’t had a haircut in a year but would spend about £80 when I do go.

By biggest expense is trying anything and everything to combat my rosacea. Maybe £20 a month but I seriously try not to.
