Tell me about your marriage proposal

A colleague got engaged at the weekend. It involved a romantic walk, a walled garden with champagne and he got down on one knee with a ring he'd had made.

Do proposals happen like this often? Mine included the word 'inevitability' and there was no ring! Grin
How was yours?

A ring hidden in the branches of a Christmas tree on Christmas morning

FourEyesGood · 29/07/2019 18:01

A confusing message in a Valentines Day card, which made me ask, “Is this a proposal?”
He replied, “Yeah, I was going to ask you today but now that you’ve asked, I suppose it is.”
Not romantic in the least, but we’re still married ten years later.

MaidenMotherCrone · 29/07/2019 18:07

Meal out then Evening drive to a local hill to watch the sunset (summer solstice). Asked me in if I'd like to be a 'his surname'. I said alright then 😁. There was a ring.

Met, engaged and married on the Solstice (not the same one obvs)

Bloodycats · 29/07/2019 18:09

I’d literally just given birth, covered in blood with thick black baby poo all over me, he got down on one knee beside the bed but I couldn’t see him as the bed was so high!
It wasn’t the most romantic but the thought was there Grin made him wait 6 years like till I finally felt ready.

KevinKlineSwoon · 29/07/2019 18:10

These are lovely. I'd feel disappointed by mine if I was't divorced!

In a punt on the Cherwell with a picnic on May Morning. There was a ring, and champagne. And suitable misty drizzle!

Blueuggboots · 29/07/2019 18:10

We were in bed. No romance at all. 😂

IcaMorgan · 29/07/2019 18:11

In the local pub just after midnight on New Year’s Eve. He had asked a friend to try and find out my ring size but her husband persuaded him to propose that night instead. I almost said no as I had told him never to propose in public

FckIt · 29/07/2019 18:14

Mine is super outing as I don't think anyone has been proposed to in the way my hubby did. All I'll say is... a loaf of bread is the way to go😂😂

Mumsymumphy · 29/07/2019 18:17

In my dad's front room, family there, I'd just changed my DC's nappy, still had the changing mat in my hand.....

TattiePants · 29/07/2019 18:21

At the top of the bell tower in Verona on my 30th birthday. Made all the more special as DH is terrified of heights so he made an extra effort! I did know he was going to propose, just not where or when. He looked green by the time we got down (hopefully due to the height rather than the thought of getting married!)

candlefloozy · 29/07/2019 18:22

Said might aswell get married. Got nothing else on this year..

Tobebythesea · 29/07/2019 18:23

A meal out and then he got down on one knee besides a fountain. We were going to a traditionally romantic place the following week on holiday (Maldives) and I had a feeling he would do it there but he wanted to take the stress off and make it a surprise- it was!

70sCarpet · 29/07/2019 18:25

Omg I want the Christmas tree one! Or punting but with dappled sun obvs... (I'm divorced now) My proposal came on NYE. I knew he was going to do it, I could feel it coming. We were at dinner in the restaurant of our hotel. I just thought 'Oh god no' & asked him if he wanted to go for a walk. We ended up in the bedroom & he proposed mid-shag Hmm not particularly romantic but I said yes!

I was proposed to again by my boyfriend in 2017. He'd had a pink sapphire ring made & we went into London on Valentine's to mooch about. We love Liberty's & whilst in there he took a particular fancy to the champagne glasses & asked me to come & see them. So I looked & he said 'What do you think?' - On the 3rd shelf up was my ring in one of the glasses! I thought it was lovely at the time & I was thrilled. Sadly though he became violent out of the blue a few weeks later & I was so shocked I did a Clare's law... & ran very fast in the opposite direction.

I'm hoping for another proposal one day!

troppibambini · 29/07/2019 18:26

He booked the penthouse at a very nice hotel in Manchester (where we are both from) for my birthday took me for a lovely lunch then shopping and bought me a beautiful very expensive coat I had been admiring for ages.
The took me out onto the balcony over looking our home town with a glass of champagne and got down on one knee with a ring he had chosen himself.
It was perfect.

Dontgiveamonkeys1350 · 29/07/2019 18:27

We were due to move into our first mortgage house the next day. Before we laid down to sleep I said will u marry me. He said yes. It was all very boring Grin

Likethebattle · 29/07/2019 18:27

We're not religious but went to a beautiful church for Christmas Midnighg mass. It was lit with candles and had a lovely choir singing. On the way back to the car he grabbed my hand and pushed the ring box into my hand and said ‘merry Christmas so do you want to get married to me?’

AnneLovesGilbert · 29/07/2019 18:29

Not a proposal as such but we were sitting in a curry house waiting for our takeaway and he beamed at me and said "can we get married then?"

We'd already talked about it and were trying to do house, marriage, baby but not sure in what order.

Went home, booked it, got hitched a couple of months later. He's the love of my life.

YouJustDoYou · 29/07/2019 18:29

We'd talked about it almost immeadiately. I told him doing it in front of people would be horrific for me. It was on a walk, on a bench, no knee. He's not and has never has been even a tiny bit romantic so I would've never got the whole Disney proposal. But it was simple and sweet.

MotherOfTheNoise · 29/07/2019 18:31

Mine is very outing for the people who know me...but it involves Chesney Hawkes 😂

Essexgirlupnorth · 29/07/2019 18:33

We were on holiday in Sri Lanka went on a trip which included a jewellery showroom. He started trying rings on the relevant finger and I asked if he was buying me an engagement ring and he said yes. Also got a matching bracelet and earrings out of the deal.
He did ask me properly back at the hotel that night.

bringincrazyback · 29/07/2019 18:33

Probable TMI, but he was going down on me at the time.

Samaranian · 29/07/2019 18:33

I was having a massive sulk because I'd come home from work, the last day before DP was going on his first long deployment as he had recently enrolled in the armed forces, and he hadn't planned anything for our last night together for months. Hadn't
booked a restaurant or even got a m&s dine in. I was fuming as I was already struggling with the thought of him leaving.

So I was ranting and raving about how selfish he was and he obviously didn't care that he was leaving me for months and he just LAUGHED IN MY FAVE. Which made me more angry. Like, what is even so funny you selfish git.

So he said well I have got you a going away present and came through with a gift bag. Told me to close my eyes to take out whatever was in the bag, closed my eyes and pulled out all the tissue paper and pulled out what felt like a photo album.

Opened my eyes and it was a wedding planner Smile

Started hysterically crying as DP was on the floor shaking like a leaf and crying as well and it was completely not romantic but also very romantic at the same time.

Fairenuff · 29/07/2019 18:35

Bag of chips in the garden. Me 'Shall we get married then?' Him 'Yeah, got any mayonnaise?'

Loyaultemelie · 29/07/2019 18:35

"So when are we getting married then?" one November night after he had to go outside to cook his steak because with dd1 morning sickness was all day and night
