Tell me about your marriage proposal

A colleague got engaged at the weekend. It involved a romantic walk, a walled garden with champagne and he got down on one knee with a ring he'd had made.

Do proposals happen like this often? Mine included the word 'inevitability' and there was no ring! Grin
How was yours?

Clavell tower in Kimmeridge bay Dorset, he had researched it and found out Thomas Hardy the novelist used to woo a lady there!
He designed the ring himself and it was all very lovely even him saying “we get on don’t we” before producing the ring! He wanted to take a picnic with little bottles of Prosecco but me being a moody Margret said I’m not carrying that all the way up those steep steps leave it In the car. It was all very romantic we toasted our future marriage with carton on apple juice! We are getting married this Saturday and I can’t wait I feel a very lucky girl.

He whisked me away to Paris and on the day we went up a sky scraper to get a nice view and set the tone for the day. Then the proposal itself happened in a beautiful French garden, weather was perfect and the ring was perfect too. He didn't get down on one knee but I never wanted him to, we were both lying side by side in the sunshine instead. Spent the rest of the day sight-seeing and went to a nice restaurant. One of the best days of my life.

If it adds any balance to things op, we're really not big wedding people and are planning on having a less than £2k day. I've already found my dress and it's £17:99!!

Itsallgonewoowoo · 29/07/2019 18:43

Sat in a restaurant, I asked him to marry me, he looked really upset and said noooooooo. Turned out he'd planned everything for a few weeks time. 20 years on and I still always guess his surprises, or the ends of his films, or books, drives him insane and cheers me up I end!

Chista · 29/07/2019 18:49

Sitting on sofa watching Top Gear, he asked so when do you want to set a date!

theydontknowweknow · 29/07/2019 18:54

He'd planned for us to go whale watching through the day and then booked a private table at the a la carte in the hotel overlooking the sea, organised rose petals around the table and a photographer to secretly take pictures of the proposal!

supercatlady · 29/07/2019 19:04

As a treat we used to buy kinder eggs and see whose surprise was best. I opened mine and jokingly said Oh it's an engagement ring! Then realised it actually was one when he got down on one knee and asked me to marry him.

Very sweet - he'd steamed it over the kettle to open the egg without breaking it!

Ginandgingers92 · 29/07/2019 19:06

On a gondola, in Venice, with bubbles 😍😍 followed by a waterfront meal and 12 too many cocktails. It was wonderful, he's never been that romantic since 😂😂

Ginandgingers92 · 29/07/2019 19:06

Oh, and the day after, we conceived our son, so it was pretty fairytale to be honest!

onlyhereforthefood · 29/07/2019 19:07

He got down on one knee by a waterfall in Yosemite national park.

Iwouldlikesomecake · 29/07/2019 19:21

In first class on a BA flight from New York. We got a tannoy announcement and everyone cheered Grin

DP is a tree surgeon. One morning he went to quote for some work. Came back later and told me his customer had told him about some baby owls in a local woodland. I love owls so he said he would take me. He lead the way down through the woods and said "can you hear them yet?" I was wondering around looking up at the trees and turned around to find him on one knee with a ring next to a tree that had "will you marry me?" Carved into it. I of course said yes!
Side note, it was a woodland that he had just secured a felling contract on and the tree was to be removed. The owner however allowed him to carve it and later cut it down just above the carving so I will always be able to go and see my engagement tree stump Smile

GreenwoodLane · 29/07/2019 19:23

Genuinely can’t remember.
Neither can he.
Been together 26 years.

Animum2 · 29/07/2019 19:54

Dh proposed at the Giants Causeway in Northern Ireland, we were walking and went to stand on a rock shaped like a boot and have our picture taken (My aunt was with us) and he sort of dropped down slightly and said I was his best friend and soul mate and he couldn't wait to spend the rest of his life with me

I kinda new it was coming as we had talked about it a lot, I said yes of course and realised a small crowd had gathered so we got a round of applause Smile

Proseccoagain · 29/07/2019 21:04

These are all so romantic! Mine was in a Chinese grocers in Singapore, 1969. I said something about feeling a bit like a married couple doing the shopping together. He said "Shall we be, then?" We'd only been going out for about 6 weeks. We were together for nearly 50 years.

Poetryinaction · 29/07/2019 21:52

My then boyfriend sent me a drunken message on Facebook saying he had just told his friends that we were getting married.

Graphista · 29/07/2019 22:00

Which one?

1st - in the pouring rain, but at a spot special to us both, with ring, but didn't go on one knee as he probably would have drowned! "Our parents will probably kill us, I don't care, I can't imagine my life without you. Marry me?" - we were 17.

2nd - mid argument! "You're so soft! Stop letting people take advantage of you! Honestly are you going to let her tell you you what to wear on our wedding day too?!" No ring, he had been planning to buy it the following weekend. I said no to this one, we got along well enough but he wasn't right for me.

3rd - exh - we had vaguely discussed the future but nothing concrete, he'd been through a tough situation at work which I'd supported him in dealing with. We were just hanging out at mine, making dinner, discussing how glad we were the problem was over and dealt with.

"I couldn't have got through the last few months without you, sorry I know I'm not doing this properly but please marry me"

GiggleMcDimples · 29/07/2019 22:04

I had just had DS1 and at that time you weren't supposed to eat peanuts during pregnancy. All I wanted was snickers and M&M's. He hid my ring in a bag of M&M's. It was actually perfect!!!! GrinGrinGrin

chesterfuckingdraws · 29/07/2019 22:15

Times Square, New York.
He wanted to go to the top of the red steps but it has started to rain so they were closed.

It was freezing so we were holding hands with our hands in his pocket, he managed to slip the ring on the wrong finger and asked me to marry him.
I'm pretty sure I didn't say yes Grin I moved the ring to the right finger and said I felt sick!!

GloriaSnockers · 29/07/2019 22:39

My husband proposed whilst very drunk on his 40th birthday, the next day he couldn’t remember but we had witnesses and he was done for, couldn’t wriggle out of it, he’s been in my snare ever since* 😂 😂

  • I do let him out occasionally 😝
Longdistance · 29/07/2019 22:46

My dh proposed to me at the top of Shirley Heights in Antigua with a steel band playing in the background. We were slightly squiffy but I made him say it again as the music was loud and didn’t catch him the first time —yeah right— Wink

GloriaSnockers · 29/07/2019 22:58

@Longdistance Shirley Heights is a really cool proposal location, I can understand that completely.

firstimemamma · 30/07/2019 07:32

I once knew someone who got proposed to straight after doing an ice bucket challenge (can't remember the proper name but it was very popular 5ish years ago). She was sat on a chair soaked head to toe in cold water and that's when her now husband decided to get down on one knee! I think his logic was that he wanted it to be a surprise, erm, well... he definitely achieved that!

T0getherindreams · 30/07/2019 08:20

In our front room. He called me downstairs to look at a new picture he had just put up. It was one of those "feature wall" things, with loads of little pictures grouped together on one wall.

I looked at it, said "thats lovely" and turned around to go back upstairs. He said "look at it properly".

Then I noticed each picture had a big "letter" somewhere in it. The letter "Y" for instance, was a picture of me standing on the beach on holiday with my arms in the air. And the letter "O" was a picture of me sitting on a huge circular sculpture in Wales. Anyway, the "letters" spelled "will you marry me ?"

He had spent the past twelve months taking pictures of me with all these hidden "letters" in them. I had no idea.

No I know why he was so obsessed with taking random pictures of me!

He's lush!Grin

gemh1984 · 30/07/2019 08:22

He bought a ring and then waited a week to propose on the sofa, while the good life was on TV.

Not romantic but not bothered about it now as I'm divorcing him!

StrongerThanIThought76 · 30/07/2019 08:23

I watched a beautiful proposal in Paternoster Square next to St Paul's a few years ago - it was about 7.30pm on Valentine's day, the bells were ringing for ages. A couple were walking through the square and he just stopped and got down on one knee. I couldn't hear what was said but her reaction was positive!!

My own was pretty shit - we were both drunk and I said to him I wanna marry you...
