How did your waters go?

Dd1 was born in her waters and it occurs to me that I don't actually know how it happens otherwise.

In TV / films it sometimes gushes out like a huge puddle unexpectedly, but I've never heard a story of that happening in real life. Does it happen? Are people kind about it if it happens in public? How does it get cleaned up?

How did your waters go? Should I start carrying a big towel around with me in case?

I was already in the birthing pool so I have no idea either! I wasted money on a mattress protector feeling paranoid they'll break in bed!

Camomila · 28/07/2019 19:26

I was already in the pool and pushing too. There was a loud 'pop' sound.

GMtoBe · 28/07/2019 19:27

I had mine artificially broken and it was still just a trickle onto one of those huge absorbant pads they have in hospital. Not as dramatic as I thought it would be!

Mine went while I was sitting on the sofa at home! Fortunately it was leather and DH was at home. I felt a little bit and then gush! This was about 6pm. On TV it’s always like rush straight to the hospital Hmm in reality I rang and said My waters have broken but I’m not having contractions. They told me to come in a bit later as there was no rush and they were quite busy. I was monitored and told I was in early but not established labour. I went home, had a shower, went to bed for a bit. Contractions ramped up, went back in about 3.30, DD was born at 7.20am. Mine was considered a fast labour but I’d have looked daft racing down to the hospital as soon as my waters had broken!

firstimemamma · 28/07/2019 19:31

I had a 16 hour straightforward labour and my waters went 50 mins before ds was born! It happened during the ten mins I had got out of the pool and was like someone had thrown a big bucket of water all over the floor! It really surprised me! No gentle trickle to speak of at all!

m0jit0 · 28/07/2019 19:32

Mine broke with a huge movie-esque gush when I was lying in bed. No signs of labour prior to this. Just glad I was at home and not out and about as there was water everywhere.

chickenflicking · 28/07/2019 19:33

My waters broke as I sat up in bed in the morning. It was a big gush, but what I didn't realise is that they would carry on 'leaking out' literally all day after that. I thought it would all be over in one go!

Anyway, my contractions didn't start and so I still had to be induced 24 hours later ☹️

GeorgieTheGorgeousGoat · 28/07/2019 19:33

Mine gushed!

Ds1 midwife went to break them when I was pushing and found they’d already gone

Ds2 the gush! In the middle of the night they went as I was walking to the loo and that was the first sign of labour.

Dd then went whilst I was pushing, right in the face of a student!

Bluebelltulip · 28/07/2019 19:33

I was in labour for both. First one went all over a midwife while she was examining me on maternity assessment, definitely quite a bit of fluid. Second time was as DD was coming out and splashed up the wall so again quite a bit.

MonteStory · 28/07/2019 19:34

In the middle of labour with both. First I was standing and there was a massive fish. They then continued to trickle with each contraction which was delightful.
With the second I think it was not long before pushing. I was lying on the bed and although I felt a gush it didn’t seem as big as with my first.
I wouldn’t invest in pads or anything, there are so many places and times they could go that I just don’t think it’s worth it.

TreacherousPissFlap · 28/07/2019 19:34

I got up to go to the loo in the night and they exploded (like on the films)
They also trickled for hours after which nobody had prepared me for (it was like I'd wet myself.
DS was three weeks early and I wasn't expecting it to be like that anyway, so it was something of a shock Grin

Rachelover40 · 28/07/2019 19:34

Mine went when I was upstairs so I just went into the bathroom, cleaned myself up and put on a sanitary towel and new knickers. Then husband and I proceeded to the hospital. I'd been having contractions for a while so it didn't come as a surprise.

MonteStory · 28/07/2019 19:34

A massive gush not fish!! I do not have fish in my womb 😂

userabcname · 28/07/2019 19:35

5am - got up to go to the loo, felt a funny popping sensation as I stood up and then an unstoppable gush! I couldn't believe how much water there was to be honest, it was crazy. My friend's waters went when she was at the beach and she thought she'd wet herself!

Badabingbadabum · 28/07/2019 19:36

Dd1 mw broke them as I stopped progressing. Dd2 went I was really in labour with an audible popping sound.

CalamityJune · 28/07/2019 19:36

I had a little gush, felt a bit like a heavy period when you've been lying down. Was told it was 'hind waters'. They broke the rest in hospital and it was like a tsunami!

OtraCosaMariposa · 28/07/2019 19:37

I have had three babies. First time the midwife broke the waters in an attempt to get things moving a bit faster.

Second and third time, I was 10 cm dilated and starting to push before the waters went. In my third labour I was so high on gas that I must have told the midwife a dozen times "my waters have gone!" even though it was blindingly obvious.

It was most definitely never the first sign of labour for me.

NoParticularPattern · 28/07/2019 19:39

Mine broke as I got into the bath. Just felt a sort of pop and then could see “bits” (plug!) in the water. Then complained loudly that they kept leaking everywhere and it was totally gross.

Mummyme87 · 28/07/2019 19:42

First time was during induction. I was lying on the bed on the phone and suddenly felt wet, like I had wet myself.

Second time and then broken as prt of the induction. Was awful. Like Niagra
Falls. Even as a midwife I felt it was a ridiculous amount. I did have polyhydramnios but even so

BareBelliedSneetch · 28/07/2019 19:44

No1 was full on soap opera gushing. Thankfully I was on the loo at the time! Was the very first sign on labour, hadn’t had a twinge before that.

No2 I didn’t even notice they’d gone. I think it happened in the bath.

CMOTDibbler · 28/07/2019 19:46

I got out of bed and then there was a big gush. I was 34 +6 so had to go to hospital and by the time they found a dr to examine me they had obviously moved around again and his head was holding them in as there was a bit of a tidal wave down the bed, and then she agreed that my waters had gone and she could see that the baby had a lovely head of hair. Which he did when born the next day.
I have to say I was surprised by just how much there was

PleaseGoogleIt · 28/07/2019 19:48

Mine gushed.. everywhere!

I was in labour and on the labour ward, I'd just changed into some nice new pyjamas thinking labour was hours away (as they'd told me numerous times!) it wasn't until my waters broke they took me seriously and I was taken to the delivery ward.. DD came an hour later.

Pipandmum · 28/07/2019 19:50

I had a section booked for 38 weeks as type 1 diabetic and baby was over 10lbs. 9 days before got up from sofa to go to bed and it was a gush. Then kept on gushing! I went to hospital because of section and they said they’d wait til morning as I wasn’t in active labour and the theatre was busy. I used up all my maternity pads as every time I moved more water came out. 10lbs 4oz. It sure wasn’t a trickle and it seemed to go on all night.
Second time also scheduled c section and guess they dealt with it.

Frith2013 · 28/07/2019 19:51

Audibly, 4 hours before I went into labour.

And literally 1 mins before the end the 2nd time.
