I would say cooking a chicken wrap for twice as long as I needed to and it burnt

Trying to bake challah bread to impress mother-in-law. Somehow got the yeast/flour measurements wrong, and ended up with a vast thing that looked like the Michelin man in bread form, seeping over the baking tray like that insulation foam you see escaping from sides of buildings.

didireallysaythat · 27/07/2019 20:51

Cottage cheese instead of cream cheese in carrot cake icing.....

Sorority · 27/07/2019 20:55

When I first attempted rice pudding I read the measurements on the pack of pudding rice and thought they seemed a bit meagre. I used the full pack of rice, and put it in the oven. It exploded all over the oven and I'm sure it was welded on, it was a nightmare to clean.

Have made it successfully since though!

Grilled a frozen pizza. This was about 1 year after I graduated so not quite student days but I'm much better now.

I once was boiling an egg and got sidetracked, eventually the smell of sulphur caught my attention. It had boiled dry.

I'm normally a good cook but can still get sidetracked.

I was about 13 and quite a good basic cook. I decided to make a Sausage casserole from my new cookery book, I followed it carefully and put it in the oven, as soon as it was cooking the smell was dreadful! When mum came home we worked out that I had put in two bulbs of garlic instead of two cloves! If was inedible.

When my nan was a young newly wed she got what she thought were onions from the pantry, chopped them up and roasted them, but turned out they were actually daffodil bulbs!!

ConorMcGregorsChin · 27/07/2019 21:17

I used to be a chef so should know better.
But making a sausage casserole for a new boyfriend, I put 2 heaped spoonfuls of dijonaisse (mustard mayo) into said casserole instead of Dijon mustard. It curdled. Totally rank. And my crown as Masterchef (which I have actually been on) was totally cancelled out...

Sticking a chilli con carne in the oven without browning the mince first. Took hours and still looked anaemic when we finally risked it Hmm

Made bread in breadmaker with far too much salt. Breadmaker now resides in a charity shop.

PannacottaLotta · 27/07/2019 21:27

I set fire to a sauce pan of oil trying to cook prawn crackers when I was 17. After panicking I threw a wet tea towel over it and chucked it out the window into the rain. Kitchen full of thick black smoke when my parents came home 🙈

ColdTattyWaitingForSummer · 27/07/2019 21:40

Forgetting to grease the waffle maker before adding the waffle mix..
Didn’t have much of a cookery repertoire when I first moved out of home, but used to make a lovely “shepherds pie” out of tinned mince and instant mash Blush

Justajot · 27/07/2019 21:43

I tried making a Jamie Oliver 15 minute meal. I seem to remember the book cost £15, the ingredients £20 and it took me 45 minutes. DH had to chisel the result off the bottom of the pan I'd used.

I do have form for welding things to pans. I've forgotten apple stewing more than once. There was lots of acrid smoke.

AndNoneForGretchenWieners · 27/07/2019 21:46

I'm a good cook, but recently haven't been interested in cooking. I bought a ready meal for one night when I was coming home from work at 9pm, and didn't realise it could only be microwaved. I put it in the oven and the packaging melted into the food and solidified.

GoodGirlsGuide · 27/07/2019 21:46

Boiling a ham joint in a china casserole dish on the hob Confused. I didn’t think that the direct heat underneath would be any different to it being in an oven but it was and it cracked and a large amount of boiling water gushed everywhere. I still have no idea what I was thinking lol

OpenYourEyes · 27/07/2019 21:57

Put a pan of broccoli on the hob but didn't turn it on. 15 mins later served up very Al Dente broccoli.

Boiled cabbage with no water in it. Disgusting.

Tried to cook my new husband a cake while he was at work and I was heavily pregnant. Managed to break the oven witg the oven timers but figured since the grill had its own door I would cook it in there instead. It didn't work.

wheresmymojo · 27/07/2019 22:04

At Uni I had my parents over for lunch and tried hard to impress.

The salt and sugar had been decanted into containers and I mixed them up - I used salt instead of sugar in my summer fruit pudding Sad

Sarahlou63 · 27/07/2019 22:08

Having had klefitiko (sp) in Crete I wanted to make it at home. Bought a leg of lamb, stuck it in the oven at the lowest possible temperature and waited 8 hours. Opened the oven (starving) and the lamb looked exactly the same as when I put it in...

SpaceCadet4000 · 27/07/2019 22:35

More than once I've tried to remove a pan from the oven using bare hands. The pain of a burn really ruins the taste of a dish...

WeShouldBeFriends · 27/07/2019 22:43

Dumped a clump of frozen blackberries into a bolognese thinking it was red wine (tip left over wine into a sandwich bag for such occasions) I'd even tested the red slush first but the berry taste confirmed to me it was wine. It didn't taste too bad to be fair but the seeds in the meat gave it away Blush Dog enjoyed it!

Atalune · 27/07/2019 22:45

Made chicken pie for my In laws with pastry top and grilled the thing. So blackened pastry which was raw under the first millimetre. I was a newly wed and trying to impress with my wifelyness Confused

The pie filling was most delicious though.

ChicCroissant · 27/07/2019 22:58

I have also started cooking a turkey with the bag of giblets still inside. I realised fairly quickly, luckily, so no melted plastic.

Recently set fire to an oven glove after leaving it on top of the hob with a burner still on (very low so barely visible). Only slight damage to the glove so threw it outside for the flames to die down and I still use it Blush

Stravapalava · 27/07/2019 23:09

I have accidentally grilled ready made pies before!
