Is it legal for a golf club to say women can’t play until after 2:30?

I’m sure it’s illegal?

And yet that’s the policy of the local golf club!

If it is illegal, who can I go to to get it sorted?

It’s legal I think as you pay different fees and sign a contract that stipulates that? Not saying iris right but probably based on archaic thinking that you would be free all day?

Lazypuppy · 26/07/2019 22:50

Why would it be illegal?

TheNightof1000Fans · 26/07/2019 22:51

It’s sex discrimination...

I'm not sure but the same debate is going on at my local golf club

TheNightof1000Fans · 26/07/2019 22:54

Aha, apparently it is illegal! Of course it is. Next step to work out who to contact about it...

It’s sex discrimination...

Not really, just different times you can play.same as my local leisure centre gym only allowing under 18's in at certain times.

And what about all the 'women only' gym classes and swim sessions. Your scenario is no different

TheNightof1000Fans · 26/07/2019 22:55

From the same document:

Example
A golf club cannot restrict female members to playing only on certain days if male members are permitted to play every day. This would be
direct discrimination because of sex. Membership terms must be the same for all members, regardless of their protected characteristics.

Do you actually play golf?

I did, for years. I haven’t played for three years.

Women take longer to go round the course even if you have a very low handicap, you just can’t get round as quickly.

Specific times for men, women and juniors and seniors are there for the good of all golfers and to ensure the best game for everyone.

msmith501 · 26/07/2019 22:58

Our local golf club doesn't allow women members to be on the committee or vote on the things that require voting on. Reduced memberships fees are the quoted reason.

LolaSmiles · 26/07/2019 23:00

Out of interest how does that work for female only swimming sessions?

I've never seen a male only swimming session (and I'm inclined to say rightly so as it's women who are the ones generally needing single sex space).

Based on what you've shared then all swimming pools are obliged to not have single sex swimming times and they should allow under 18s at all times rather than at set times.

Genuine question because I can't see how a blanket no differences between sexes or age links to the common practice of female only sessions and limiting when children can attend.

TheNightof1000Fans · 26/07/2019 23:00

Yes, I do play golf.

TheNightof1000Fans · 26/07/2019 23:01

Single sex swimming sessions are allowed because it’s to encourage participation (something like that!). Have a google...

Can’t believe any poster would try to excuse this!

What a load of bullshit. However, all those delightful golf clubs are struggling for subs and younger members while their ageing sexist members make rules like this.

Take up cycling? That’s what did for golf.

TheNightof1000Fans · 26/07/2019 23:06

Yeah I’m astonished too actually!

cstaff · 26/07/2019 23:33

In the club where my folks play they have separate times / days for men and women which sounds fairly equal to me. They also have mixed days.

A lot of women only pay half the fees and choose to be half members but that is their choice. Afaik men don't have that option so maybe that is sexist in favour of the women. Ffs.

cranstonmanor · 27/07/2019 08:25

Can the men play after 2:30 though?

cranstonmanor · 27/07/2019 08:25

Can you self identify as a man?

TheRedBarrows · 27/07/2019 08:29

OMG.
Sex Discrimination is alive and well, justifies and apologised for.

Any woman affected by this should encourage a Transwoman Golfer to protest that it is transphobic.

It will be sorted in no time.

coconuttelegraph · 27/07/2019 08:31

And golf wonders why it's failing to attract younger players..

The only advantage is that you know where to avoid golf wankers, join a current club

Kez200 · 27/07/2019 08:32

I think I would self identify if my ikkle devil was on form.

To be honest, if not, it's not something that bothers me if its a private club. Do Masons include woman? Do guides accept boys? Woman own sessions outweigh men only in most cases. So long as its not a group you have to join, then move to somewhere that does.

Leggyfrog · 27/07/2019 08:34

Is your contract with the club the same as the mens though- do you pay the same membership fees for example? The example you quoted would only hold true I believe if this was the case.

RoomR0613 · 27/07/2019 08:52

Do you pay the same fees as the men OP?

ForalltheSaints · 27/07/2019 08:52

LolaSmiles you are fully clothed when playing golf. Seems a significant difference.

Some golf clubs have been the last bastions of sexism. There is one where the Open Golf Championship is not being hosted there any more because the club is men only.

coatlessinspokane · 27/07/2019 08:56

If it’s a case of different fees for women = reduced times then surely both options should be available to both sexes, like different tiers of gym membership.

TheNightof1000Fans · 27/07/2019 10:36

The men and the women can both have a 7 day a week membership. For men, this means they can play all day on a Saturday. For women, this means they can play after 2:30 on a Saturday.
