Cats in this heat...

Are they better off inside or out? Our girls are adamant they want to be outside, I think they'd be better off staying indoors where it's cooler, DH thinks let them out, they can find a shady spot and might get a breeze. We do have water bowls outside in the shade.

What's the MN verdict?

One of mine is in and the other is out. She had her feet in the pond earlier Grin

OhYouBadBadKitten · 25/07/2019 13:26

Mine are outside today. I'm treating them with packet food in gravy and I've added some extra water into it for my older one to keep her hydrated.

WeBuiltCisCityOnSexistRoles · 25/07/2019 13:29

Wait, what...tuna ice lollies?! Tell me more!

My cat is very very long haired but insists on being outside. I have also made a shaded tent for her in the garden using a blanket and chair I didn't take these outside just for that oh no

Before she came in, miowed for Dreamies, watched me open the packet than legged it back to her tent and expected me to put some in the tent for her Hmm Naturally I did Grin I've also put some ice in her water bowl in there and tested it with my finger to make sure it's right. I might or might not have fanned her with a paper fan before Grin

(My DD complained about going to work in the heat and I unsympathetically said "you've got air con, everyone has to get on with it". I think I'm a great cat mother but not so good with the proper mothering Blush

Your cats are missing out if you don’t do tuna ice lollies! All I do is pour out the tinned tuna in spring water, mix in a bit extra water and pour in to lolly moulds. They go crazy for them!

Cedar03 · 25/07/2019 13:37

Mine has spent the morning on the sofa but has been disturbed by DD who also wanted to sit on it. She's now in the garden lying under a table near the house where it is really very warm. She looks happy enough.

Like a PP I have put water in the outside bowl that she prefers to drink from as there isn't any rainwater in it at the moment. She hardly ever drinks from her actual water bowl.

Socksontheradiator · 25/07/2019 13:38

A local pet sitter posted a lovely bit of advice about keeping pets cool. Dogs, little fluffies etc. At the bottom she put 'and cats will be cats'.
Made me grin. I have one mainly indoor cat and she'd be daft enough to sunbathe outside at midday (she's currently curled up on my lap Shock)
I trust my outdoor cat to make his own decisions. He's just come in.
It does depend on your cat I think.

PristineCondition · 25/07/2019 13:39

One of mine is lying in the mud in a hanging basket- she turfed out the plants to fit
The other Is lying half in Half out the back to and yowing loudly when the kids playing out having a mass wAter fight stray to close

BlueSkiesLies · 25/07/2019 13:40

My cat has been hanging out inside mainly, it is much cooler in my sitting room than outside.

Cats aren;t stupid, if they are too hot out they will come in!

TaxiPlease · 25/07/2019 13:41

Mine is mostly an indoor cat and alternates between sleeping stretched out under the dining table or on my desk at the moment. I stroke him with a wet flannel several times a day to cool him down a bit as cats don't sweat. He was skeptical at first but seems to quite like it now.

Alpacathebag · 25/07/2019 13:42

Mine is on a pile of clean washing, the little knobhead. She has access to outside but is choosing to be in.

EllenRipley · 25/07/2019 14:07

I'm not sure if mine is sunbathing or has passed out.

My idiot black cat us alternating lying in the full sun with trying to sit on Dh's knee.

BuzzShitbagBobbly · 25/07/2019 14:18

Mine are alternating between

Sleep under a bush
Sprawl inside
Roast on patio before realising it really is too hot, before starting the rotation again.

They are also enjoying the fans on their bellies at night.

AfterSchoolWorry · 25/07/2019 14:18

Mine pans out in front of the fan!

Bezalelle · 25/07/2019 14:55

My lad has the option of going outside but he's found a shady spot under my desk and seems happy there.

TremblingFanjo · 25/07/2019 15:52

Ours are alternating between-
Sprawling under a bush
Sprawling in flower bed
Sprawling on tiled kitchen floor
Sprawling on wet grass where I emptied the paddling pool

I've offered ice cubes but manky warm pond water is favoured. They are panting like dogs though.

BearSoFair · 25/07/2019 15:55

@Bloodycats he's gorgeous!

Indoor cat has sprawled across the kitchen table...she knows she's not allowed but is looking at us as if to say 'just try to move me'.
Outdoor cat, completely ridiculously, has just emerged from inside the PVC greenhouse!! Is she stupid?! Hmm Now stretched out on the shady decking after a long drink...

My old boy is spending his time between sitting in front of the fan or going outside to come straight back in.
He hasn't eaten anything yet today though.should I be worried by this?

JemimaTab · 25/07/2019 15:59

They seem to like lying on the soil in this weather - it must be cool. I generally think it’s best to leave them to their own devices, they’re pretty resourceful creatures.

Babdoc · 25/07/2019 16:01

Cats are not daft, by and large. They’ll find a nice spot at a temp that suits them. Mine has limited her vermin murdering activities to nighttime, presumably as it’s cooler for her. Otherwise it’s business as usual - long snoozes on a shady bit of patio, interspersed with ditto under a tree, or on my brand new thick fluffy white bath mat. Which she thinks looks so much nicer covered in black moulted fur!

HairyFloppins · 25/07/2019 16:06

Mine is refusing to go out as he doesn't like wind.

He's spent most of the day just wondering round the house and now he has finally collapsed on our laminate floor.

I do feel for him today.

Lindy2 · 25/07/2019 16:13

Mine was outside from around 6am to 10.30am. It was 33 degrees here at 10.30am so I encouraged her inside then. She is not blessed with a great deal of common sense so I was happier knowing she wasn't outside getting too hot.
It's 37 degrees here now. The air is just burning hot regardless of whether you are in the shade or not.

MashedSpud · 25/07/2019 16:16

She’s snoozing under the bed.

TheFirstOHN · 25/07/2019 16:22

Lying on the patio in the shade. We do put suncream on her pink nose. She is unimpressed.

Cats are able to cope with a range of temperatures and will do what they want to.

I've another one too but she's in my room.
