Heatwaves - do you like them or loathe them?

I have to say that as much as I hate winter, I just can not tolerate excessive heat. The older I am getting the less I seem to handle these humid, extra hot, sticky days. I feel completely worn out, weak and shaky, really nauseous and down right moody. I can’t sleep so feel shattered too. Dh on the other hand (who also works outside) loves it, whilst I seem to be roasting And wilting from the inside out, he is calm and mellow and says if you pace yourself it’s great!
Mine you, I shouldn’t moan as it’ll probably be pissing it down when we go on our hols to Somerset in two weeks!!

I don't like the heat, and I say that in winter! Love the cold. I just don't cope in the sun. I get sweaty and irritable fast!

BarbedBloom · 24/07/2019 16:13

Hate. Makes my RA flare, I have heat rash and get constant headaches. The cats are pretty miserable too Grin

SnuggyBuggy · 24/07/2019 16:13

I'm really not enjoying it. Ive barely been outside all day and DD has been cranky even outside in the shade. Dreading another sweaty night. Give me the dead of winter any day.

Skyejuly · 24/07/2019 16:14

I'm happy in winter. Love cold strolls. Absolutely despise hot nights.

Sarcelle · 24/07/2019 16:17

Hate extreme heat. I have just left central London and its bloody horrible.

Afternooninthepark · 24/07/2019 16:19

I feel for poor animals with their thick coats, my poor little dog doesn’t know what to with himself, he’s laid flat out on the kitchen floor and the heat has given him a bad tum, bless him!

I much prefer the heat to the cold!

I rarely sweat though so I think that’s why. I see some women who can’t cope with the heat because they perspire and that would drive me crazy, so I’m very fortunate.

No idea if it means I’ve got something horribly wrong with me but I just don’t sweat.

Asta19 · 24/07/2019 16:21

Portable air con. It's a life saver. I'm sitting in my room in a pleasant 22 degrees. While everyone else is roasting to death! It is a bit noisy but I find I can sleep through it as it's white noise. Means I am getting a good nights sleep too which always helps. Given it's meant to be 37 here tomorrow I am so thankful I have it.

Aragog · 24/07/2019 16:24

Like them.

Its not like we have them all the time. At most it's a few days of the year, some years none.

Not sure I even count mid 30s, as forecast tomorrow, as particularly extreme though. On holiday it often in excess of this for much of the summer after all. I know it is different if you're stuck on public transport, and most offices handiwork places don't have air con here but on MN people complaining about it being too hot all the time as soon as we have an inking of sun!

I just do things slower, drink a lot more cold drinks, use a fanned wear thinner clothes of more natural fibres. Like I would in hot climates abroad. Even if at work i just do it at a slightly slower pace.

I hate winter though as I have arthritis and the cold and wet hurts. My joints are a lot more affected and I have to take a lot more painkillers on a daily basis. And the winter cold goes on for far longer than any heatwave we might get in my experience. The sun, the warmth and the dryness lets those joints repair and feel better for a while. Bliss.

Julykthat · 24/07/2019 16:24

I love heat! But where I live (Irish Atlantic coast) we don't get much and certainly not enough. It's 21° today and that's about the height of it this year so far Sad. My children hate heat though so even today I have to listen to them moaning. Someday I am going to move further south (off this soggy island)!

Aragog · 24/07/2019 16:26

Dh is like that!
Both me and dd sweat a lot especially in humid hot weather. Ive never understood how some people can look so glamorous still whilst abroad in heat. We are just a damp slightly bedraggled sight! But I still prefer the heat to cold! Fortunately I am old enough to not care too much and fairly confident in my own skin on the whole, even when said skin is dripping!

SpeedyShutter · 24/07/2019 16:29

I don't mind being too cold because at least you can put layers on and warm up. You can't do the opposite when it's too hot!

We have a fan on and I've done the dc a quick microwave meal for tea. We had sarnies for dinner. I just cba to cook.

And OMG the ants yesterday! Bazillions of the fuckers, all over the path outside the door. Some were in my hair.

Afternooninthepark · 24/07/2019 16:30

21 would be perfect for me, I just can not seem to tolerate extremes, hate the cold too as I have raynaud’s which is so painful especially as I am a dog walker and I can not feel my fingers at the end of the day during the winter. But give me every day between 18-22 with a light breeze, blue skies and a few fluffy clouds floating by, I would be in seventh heaven!

I absolutely hate anything over 25 degrees. My oh works outside also and he likes it. But I'm just sat indoors with the curtains drawn, sweating like a pig and I'm irrated at every little thing. Fighting with my 1 year old to change his nappy is a nightmare. I don't sleep, worry about the kids overheating all night and can't be arsed to cook

Chocolatedaim · 24/07/2019 16:33

I do like it, and it’s a bit much in London, but it’s manageable for me, and I say that as someone who is 38weeks pregnant!

concernedforthefuture · 24/07/2019 16:34

Loathe. Walking round town today, the air was thick with the smell of unwashed bodies and feet Envy

SnuggyBuggy · 24/07/2019 16:38

I'm really resisting the temptation to just sit DD in front of the TV under a fan

Asta19 · 24/07/2019 16:40

the air was thick with the smell of unwashed bodies and feet

They probably were washed when they first left the house though. I'm like that. When it's like this, I can have a cool shower but just the effort of putting clothes on and getting ready makes me sweat again! Deodorant can only do so much. Then if you get on a hot tube or a bus you're sweating again. It's not easy to stay fresh when it's like this.

CardinalBurns · 24/07/2019 16:42

Hate them 😞

GeneandFred · 24/07/2019 16:42

Love them! Reminds me of working abroad in my younger days and living in Cyprus!

SnuggyBuggy · 24/07/2019 16:44

I remember this one job where it was a horrible shade less half hour walk from the station. I used to have to wash myself in the disabled toilet and change clothes each morning, it was grim.

purplereindeer · 24/07/2019 16:45

Love it. I wear flowy billowy clothes, drink iced water and do as little as possible (4DC, so erm, still quite a lot!)

DP is like a bear with a sore head though. He has spent today naked and bitching about it being hot.

RushianDisney · 24/07/2019 16:51

I would enjoy it if I wasn't in the company of DD who is grouchy in this heat. She also keeps loudly exclaiming that I am 'disgusting and sweaty' Grin

KnifeAngel · 24/07/2019 16:55

Absolutely hate the heat. It makes me feel ill. I had a shower this morning within half an hour I was sweating.

GummyGoddess · 24/07/2019 16:56

Hate them. Murder and violent crime also go up when it's hot.
