We were talking about careers advice at work today and I remembered jiig-cal. It must’ve been the early 90s when I used it at school.

My jig-call results suggested I should be a window dresser or an archaeologist. Sadly I am neither đŸ˜‚

Orange you have to find that printout!

Xenadog is there still time for a career change? Could you combine the two and make prosthetic limbs for prisoners?

I think mine said Brewer. I should have done that really.

polarisation · 19/07/2019 21:52

I think they upgraded it to Centigrade by the 2000s but it sounds like similar questions... "Do you want to work underground" always stuck with me for some reason!

doodlejump1980 · 19/07/2019 21:55

I did! It said I was going to be a secretary or an actuary. I am neither.

AChickenCalledDaal · 19/07/2019 21:55

Yes!

Didn't you have to colour in tiny, tiny little oval blobs? Or was that something else?

Every single person in my class got Prison Officer. At an all-girls' school. I reckon the Prison Service had a recruitment crisis that year and bribed the software developer.

AChickenCalledDaal · 19/07/2019 21:57

Such nostalgia!

WeShouldOpenABar · 19/07/2019 21:58

It might be different software as I'm in Ireland but I got actuary, bookmaker or bin man. I'm an accountant so actuary and bookmaker probably make sense but I don't know where bin man dropped from.

NationMcKinley · 19/07/2019 21:59

Ooooo I got nurse and I am an actual nurse! I also got fire brigade and RAF Hmm

Moongirl10 · 19/07/2019 22:01

All my friends and I got ‘sandwich maker’ đŸ˜‚ I now work in the medical field.

tunnocksreturns2019 · 19/07/2019 22:04

Sandwich maker đŸ˜‚

Yes you coloured in blobs. And then discovered your future. Or not. đŸ˜…

We did this on our English girls grammar school.
Coloured in little boxes of questions such as which do you prefer more working with people or on your own. I pretty much figured out the system to get the result I wanted at the time. Graphic designer or architect. I think we did it a few times.
I did actually become an architect.

youllhavehadyourtea · 19/07/2019 22:11

DS1 came home having done something like this about careers - but I dont rememebr the job he was 'given' . I do rememebr it said he was a Polar Bear.

was that Jig-cal?

twopintsprick · 19/07/2019 22:13

I was at school in Edinburgh in the early 90s and never came across this - feel totally cheated Wink where was my jiig cal

tunnocksreturns2019 · 19/07/2019 22:24

Polar bear? Not polar explorer?!

Imagine it’s been replaced with something sophisticated, hopefully combined with a bit more careers advice from a human than the 5 mins I got.

twopints you were totally cheated and if you don’t have a career you love, it’s becsuse you didn’t do jiig-cal.

Horses4 · 19/07/2019 22:26

Yes! I was supposed to be a probation officer or something else I can’t remember.

tunnocksreturns2019 · 19/07/2019 22:27

Horses and what do you do for work??

OP posts:
Sunnysidegold · 19/07/2019 23:15

I think I did both jig Cal and centigrade. Probation officer. I didn't even know what that was so looked it up and was really worried I would have to become one as I was scared of criminals. I am now a teacher.

Springcleanish · 19/07/2019 23:18

Actuary, nearly everyone in the class got Actuary, no idea why and none of us had a clue what they did.

FairlyOddmother · 19/07/2019 23:30

Yes! I got (oddly specifically) naval architect; or, librarian. I am neither.

mawbroon · 20/07/2019 00:09

Omg, I did this and I'm pretty sure I know where my printout is.

I am currently Nair-ing my legs but will look in a wee while.

I remember getting Prison Officer and Air Traffic Controller. I am neither...

KnitterOfSocks · 20/07/2019 00:18

I did this - gas engineer or tax accountant were the results. I am a structural engineer now, so a very tenuous link there!

KnitterOfSocks · 20/07/2019 00:21

I'm not Scottish though, I'm from Yorkshire, so I think it might have spread a bit...

themartinipolice · 20/07/2019 00:22

I did this - left school in 1998.
It said I should be a teacher.
I am a teacher.
I suppose it had to get someone's future right!
