Knife and fork, how do you push food onto fork?!

DH and I have decided the other is odd. Grin

He noticed that if we’re eating something where we need to push our food onto a fork (which I know is a bit plebby full stop) we do it the opposite way round.

He asked me to ask you which way round you do it.

So do you push from far away, toward you and the fork (red arrows) or do you push away from you (yellow arrows).

Or do you have no clue what I’m talking about?

Knife and fork, how do you push food onto fork?!

End on, like any normal person.

BillyJowel · 17/07/2019 17:51

Both of your forks are upside down. They’re not to be used as shovels.

Finfintytint · 17/07/2019 17:52

In theory, red arrows apply. I wouldn't know obviously - a friend once told me Grin

I hold the fork the other way up, and I push the food onto the end of the prongs.

BiscuitDrama · 17/07/2019 17:52

Yes I know we’re being plebby.

But if you’re eating the last bit of risotto I need to push it on.

End on? What? Grin

Fork up the other way, and end on.

ChesterCake · 17/07/2019 17:53

^ 👏 Don't shovel it in OP

Shockers · 17/07/2019 17:53

Ok, if using as a shovel, I’d bring the food towards the fork and me... I think.

Shockers · 17/07/2019 17:54

The red arrow way.

MissYeti · 17/07/2019 17:54

I do red arrows but I also hold my knife oddly so I doubt I'm a good person to ask

Chickenish · 17/07/2019 17:54

Put your fork facing down, push the food up the back of the fork. Squish and eat. Or, if somewhere posh, less of the squishing.

hopeishere · 17/07/2019 17:54

Yeah fork the other way and push onto the top of the tines.

TeenTimesTwo · 17/07/2019 17:54

For peas or the last bit of something, I'd use the red method.

amusedbush · 17/07/2019 17:54

I either stab the food or I just shovel it up with little assistance. Oh, and I swap my cutlery around as soon as I sit down so I use the "wrong" hands Grin

Doje · 17/07/2019 17:54

Ummm, I think I do both! 🤷‍♀️

Ihopeyourcakeisshit · 17/07/2019 17:55

You are using it like a shovel Shock
You need to turn it upside down and use the end you philistine!Grin

ContactLight · 17/07/2019 17:55

If it's the last bit of risotto, use a spoon. Job done.

RainOrSun · 17/07/2019 17:56

Red arrows.

bagpiss · 17/07/2019 17:57

I have my fork over the other way so prongs face down and then you 'prong' food onto the end then scoop a bit extra over the top, never used it as the shovel way round.

Pinkprincess1978 · 17/07/2019 17:59

I shovel and I'm yellow arrows 😂

MrsDimmond · 17/07/2019 18:01

I can't believe all these etiquette snobs - as if they never shovel Hmm

To answer your question OP, red arrows

Paramicha · 17/07/2019 18:02

They are upside down. You don't shovel food.

Finfintytint · 17/07/2019 18:03

It's just the last bit of risotto - lick the plate Grin

HeyMicky · 17/07/2019 18:03

Neither ideally. But if necessary I'd treat it like soup and push away from you, so yellow arrows.

msmith501 · 17/07/2019 18:19

Curious to know who determines the correct way to use a fork. From a purely "enjoying food" perspective, holding the form tines-down means squashing perfectly nice food onto the back of the fork and strikes me as a hangover from Victorian times. Historically, evidence supports forks starting life as a wooden flatfish scoop which then evolved to have a small "bowl" carved in the middle to help prevent food items falling off and then evolved further to have tin es for stabbing I.e. historically forks evolved tines upwards as per the OPs picture. The idea of turning a scoop upside down to balance food on the back seems ridiculous - after all, we don't use spoons upside down ... or should we? Maybe the answer is: do what works for you and allows you to enjoy your food before it goes cold. Should never eat food off your knife though..... 😀
