Knife and fork, how do you push food onto fork?!

BiscuitDrama · 17/07/2019 17:48

DH and I have decided the other is odd. Grin

He noticed that if we’re eating something where we need to push our food onto a fork (which I know is a bit plebby full stop) we do it the opposite way round.

He asked me to ask you which way round you do it.

So do you push from far away, toward you and the fork (red arrows) or do you push away from you (yellow arrows).

Or do you have no clue what I’m talking about?

Knife and fork, how do you push food onto fork?!

This definitely doesn't fall into 'middle class anxiety' (and what's wrong with middle class anyway?) at all.

If you must use a fork as a spoon transfer to your right hand and put your knife down.

It's not difficult to use cutlery properly.

Finfintytint · 17/07/2019 19:00

Ha ha , just proved my point!

msmith501 · 17/07/2019 19:00

Both curry and bolognese have a lot of sauce usually and I find it easier to enjoy my food with a spoon (and a fork) so that I can enjoy the sauce at the same time rather than trying to use a nice to push it onto the tones of the fork, only to watch as it slips through the gaps. I'm even worse with chop sticks.

Neither! Both of you are doing it completely wrong!! Turn the fork around for a start!

msmith501 · 17/07/2019 19:06

@Noeuf - my point again... who is to say what is correct when it one's to using cutlery. I'm not saying which is right or wrong but merely asking posters to question the basis of their statements or beliefs, rather than blindly saying that one person is wrong or bad mannered. Question, question, question. It's why we no longer tolerate most 'isms (racism etc) or slavery or homophobia etc. Just cos something was thought to be ok in the dark ages doesn't mean that it should be used as a reason for continuing to do something now. And I know that fork usage isn't a particularly important topic but it's still important to question entrenched beliefs.

SouthWestmom · 17/07/2019 19:10

It's easier and more practical? For cutting for a start?

Flinty not sure what your point was apart from general sneering?

SouthWestmom · 17/07/2019 19:10

Sorry, Finfinty .

TheKitchenWitch · 17/07/2019 19:13

As far as I can tell this is a particular British peculiarity - nobody else thinks the correct way to use a curved tool for eating is to try and squish the food onto the back of it. As a pp said, you don’t do it with a spoon so please stop doing it with your forks.

In answer to your question OP, either. Both are fine.

orangeshoebox · 17/07/2019 19:14

noef maybe it's a novel idea. but you can turn the fork around to poke your meat to cut it. and turn it again when you need it to eat veg & sauce.

Finfintytint · 17/07/2019 19:16

Not sneering. Just questioning who decides. Traditionally the middle classes adopt upper class practices and the working class mimic these practices too.

BogglesGoggles · 17/07/2019 19:17

I read plebby as pebbly and thought you were eating rocks. When I’m feeling ‘plebby’ is use my fork the way I use a spoon. Generally eat risotto with a spoon though.

ThatCurlyGirl · 17/07/2019 19:18

Red arrows obviously... anything else is LTB territory Wink

msmith501 · 17/07/2019 19:19

And to clarify, if it makes a difference, I do turn it around for stabbing chunks of food like potatoes or meat. Forks: tools for every occasion, versatile and yet so simple.

ThatCurlyGirl · 17/07/2019 19:20

Pffft if you think you never shovel you're lying to yourself surely - there's nothing better than a forky shovel of lasagne carefully constructed to include some of the crispy cheesy top. Foodgasm.

mycatisblack · 17/07/2019 19:21

I prefer to use a spork on most occasions. Job done.

msmith501 · 17/07/2019 19:21

Before we all continue this fascinating look into table manners, have we properly considered what will happen when the Daily Fail picks up on this thread? They'll be a readers' survey, a hotline for those suffering from fork-related anxiety and maybe even a leaflet that you can send off for...

Maybe we should ask Dear Deirdre?

Dollywilde · 17/07/2019 19:22

I genuinely never shovel. DH does the red method, but he also eats with his knife and fork the wrong way around despite not being a lefty, and has been known to lick his fork in public. I despair of him Grin whilst secretly wondering how I’m going to get our future kids to eat properly if “Daddy doesn’t do it”

msmith501 · 17/07/2019 19:23

@Dollywilde - how do you known it's not your DH who's correct?

DogbertDogglesworth · 17/07/2019 19:28

I just point the tines down towards the food, stab, use knife to push it on securely then eat.
Unless I'm eating peas then it's squash and shovel.
I don't care what anyone thinks.
I eat with my mouth closed and I don't talk with a mouthful, what more do you want?

AbbyNormal · 17/07/2019 19:31

Red arrows for me. Then shovel it straight in my gob because I'm common as muck, clearly.

FoxSquadKitten · 17/07/2019 19:31

The red way 🍴

#teamshovel 😉

msmith501 · 17/07/2019 19:33

Excellent point about eating with your mouth closed. Nothing worse than watching someone masticate their food like a cow chewing the cud. Or talking with a full mouth and spraying crumbs delicately about.

museumum · 17/07/2019 19:33

I refuse to squash peas or sweet corn or rice onto the back of my fork if eating at home. It’s just pointless and illogical.

InsertFunnyUsername · 17/07/2019 19:34

There is a world outside of middle class Britain, where people eat a variety of ways with a variety of utensils. So all this "the only way to use a fork" is a bit silly, no one with a life cares in the real world.

Anyway, i just pick my plate up and lick it Wink

EyeDrops · 17/07/2019 19:40

Red arrows, but I'd swap into the other hand for shovelling.
