How much have you spent on teacher end of term gifts?

ScrambledToe · 17/07/2019 17:03

2 kids, 4 teachers (job shares) plus 2 TA. £30! Shock

I only got them chocs.

Luckily my dc do 2yrs in the same class so I only ever buy a gift when they’re actually moving out of the classroom and to another teacher. So won’t be buying anything at all next year Grin

Zero. As always.

Gertie75 · 17/07/2019 17:07

£4 on something reduced from £28, I don't want to say what in case dd's teacher is on here!

Somersetlady · 17/07/2019 17:08

€57 on a autumnal Chanel eye shadow pallet. She has been amazing with our son for two years he is now moving on. I know she loves her hair and make up but is not paid well enough to treat herself to luxury items.

I then had to buy my other sons teacher the same to be ‘fair’ Confused

Lwmommy · 17/07/2019 17:12

£15 1 teacher and 2 TAs, £5 costa voucher each, enough for coffee and a cake.

ScrambledToe · 17/07/2019 17:13

That’s a good effort @Gertie75 Grin

Your son’s teacher sounds nice @Somersetlady.

I know we don’t have to spend anything, and they’re just doing their job!... I’m a secondary school teacher so never get gifts 🤣... But my dc’s teachers and TAs are lovely and do go the extra when needed.

Yeah @Lwmommy a fiver isn’t much at all, but it adds up when buying for more than one

3 kids
One childminder
A load of preschool teachers
One teacher
2 TAs
4 after school club people
1 lollipop lady
About £35 in total I think. Seeds and chocolates mostly. A bee theme.

My personal opinion is that teacher gifts have got totally out of hand. I get it's a hard job, but it is their job, they get paid for it, and lots of jobs are stressful.
I picked up scented candles x 4 at originally £5.50 each. They had been reduced in the sale to £3.50 each, but when I got to the till she said 'oh these are the last of these so I'll take half off '. When I checked my receipt later she had charged £1.25 each. Wrapped in big pouffy tissue paper that I already had, tied with ribbon, and the kids carried them in very happily.
To me, it's a token, mainly so the kids don't feel left out. I refuse to get into competitive gifting.
*waits for flaming

ATrampsVest · 17/07/2019 17:23

£3 to be put in a kitty with the rest of the class to get the teacher and TAs a gift voucher.

Somersetlady · 17/07/2019 17:25

@Hellhath to get into competitive gift giving i assume you’d have to tell the world what you bought or at least hand it over maybe give the receipt or it would be pointless?

No one knows what we gave the teachers and i only answered a question on MN.

I bought the gift because I am GRATEFUL to my sons teacher for all she has done for him above and beyond what is expected of her role. I wanted to say thank you with something that i genuinely thought she would be delighted to get that she would be unlikely to purchase herself.

You have an extremely skewed view of the world if you see token gifts for teachers as a competition.

DreamMeOffMyFeet · 17/07/2019 17:26

£25 ish for 1 teacher & 2 TAs:
£5 costa gift card each
Personalised post it's for the teacher and a pen pot with indoor plant in £9
Hand made card each
Was going to give each a re-gifted bottle of wine as well as we always get given wine but neither DH or I drink but I think they'll get endless wine off other parents.
This is DS first year in school so not sure what's the 'norm' Confused

OrdinarySnowflake · 17/07/2019 17:27

£20, I put £10 in each teachers collection, we normally get them John lewis vouchers.

I still need to get something for the childminder.

GreeboIsMySpiritAnimal · 17/07/2019 17:28

We do joint presents, I've donated £10 per class. Don't know how much DD's class raised, but I coordinated DS's class collection and we got £250 - which was shared between teacher and 3 TAs, with smaller gifts for the head teacher, office staff, kitchen staff, librarian and care taker.

waitWhatNow · 17/07/2019 17:30

£15 for 8 (yes apparently there are 8) members of staff. I did this by buying little gift bags, seeds, seed bombs and a bulb with some gift tags. Wrote "thank you" on the gift tag, put the mix of seeds etc in the little bags. Job done. Stuff was from eBay.

MichelleC69 · 17/07/2019 17:30

Absolutely naff all. High school means multiple teachers - no way I'm buying for everyone!

hallamoo · 17/07/2019 17:32

Greebol, that's really kind. Admin staff work just as hard as teachers, but often get nothing. It's very arbitrary.

My DC make their teachers a card to say thank you, and we send in biscuits/cakes for the staff room so that all school staff are included. It's always appreciated.

plantbased · 17/07/2019 17:33

I run a craft related business so have made all the process ya which normally sell for £28 each but I'm lucky I have all the equipment already. Both my ids go to a special school and one has 4 teachers and one has 3 so 7 presents in total. They deserve to feel appreciated and special for all they do for my kids

Hairydilemma · 17/07/2019 17:33

We do a collection and put £5 in per child, so hopefully not too much for any one person to contribute, but a pot of up to £150 if everyone does it, which is split to buy vouchers for teacher and TAs.

So I’ve spent £10 there as I have DTs, plus have bought the office ladies a couple of boxes of chocs as it’s our last year. So about £18 in total plus cards.

plantbased · 17/07/2019 17:33

That should say made all the presents

Youngandfree · 17/07/2019 17:35

€75 🙈 2 kids.

Ds is in Montessori has ‘3 Montessori teachers’ 2 full time, 1 part time
DD is in school her teacher , and I won’t get into the nitty gritty of how it works but she also has contact with 3 other teachers and a TA in another class that she is very fond of!

Also the after school teacher that they have for an few hours after school.

So that was 9 gifts in total!!

ScrambledToe · 17/07/2019 17:46

Totally agree @Hellhath I find a token box of chocs is fine. Surprised I still spent £30 🤣

OP posts:
ScrambledToe · 17/07/2019 17:48

Don’t think it’s competitive though. No one else is bothered what others have bought.

OP posts:
ScrambledToe · 17/07/2019 17:50

The norm is whatever you’re comfortable with @DreamMeOffMyFeet.

Some on here buy nothing, I buy every other year, some buy small tokens, some go all out. It’s all normal.

I was just interested, because I’m a nosy fucker 😀
