How much have you spent on teacher end of term gifts?

2 kids, 4 teachers (job shares) plus 2 TA. £30! Shock

I only got them chocs.

Luckily my dc do 2yrs in the same class so I only ever buy a gift when they’re actually moving out of the classroom and to another teacher. So won’t be buying anything at all next year Grin

I usually get prosecco. Last year, the teacher who had done wonders with DS1 for years retired and we bought her and her husband a dinner for two with wine at our local gastropub.

This year I asked for my end of year gift to go to a well known charity that I am fund raising for instead of getting a voucher. I was shocked at the amount but delighted for the charity.

I also got a few fun gifts that the children have made which is always special. Also a few cards that made me cry. When it is difficult and I am tired I read some of the messages and it reminds me why I keep going!

We do a class kitty. I gave £5. Easy. Ds2 signed the card.

I think doing a kitty is a fab idea. Not everyone wants to/can contribute, and that's fine. They can do their own thing/do nothing. But us all putting a few quid in and then getting something for the teacher and the TA is always a good idea I think.

Another one here who does a class kitty. The same mum organises it and buys the gifts every year with the money we all contribute.

Nothing, I never have given anything and my children are 29, 18 and 16. My 6 year old mentioned that other children brought in presents, I just mentioned that he can make a Thankyou card or picture.

I give donations of money/stationary supplies to the teacher/department

About £30 on 3 bottles of wine 1 for SENCO, 1 for DS's form tutor and 1 for DD's form tutor who is also DS's English tutor and has been amazing for DS.

DS chooses a little something personal for the teacher himself. Sometimes he doesn't want to get anything. It's up to him. He's a clever, easy going kid who doesn't need extra input. In fact he's been used as someone the teachers sit troublesome pupils next to hoping his behaviour would rub off on them so if anything he deserves thanks from them! I'll take him to get something tomorrow if he wants to as he finishes midweek.

I used to always contribute to the class collection with my older DC. Sometimes there'd be £500+ in a collection. There was quite a bit of pressure to do so even when I was not happy with a teacher, having a DS with SN who got little support and very unhelpful teachers. A lot of the class reps seemed to want to outdo each other. It was ridiculous. I wouldn't even be told what the gift was.

At DS's primary, the class rep was given short shrift in Reception when she asked me for money without even introducing herself. She never asked again until this year (Yr5) when DS came out of school saying I had to give X's mum £10 for the teacher so he could get £330Hmm. She'd already texted me asking if I wanted to contribute but I'd told her No. Why she involved her DC telling him to ask mine to tell me to give her money I don't know. She blanks me all year! I actually said to DS that she had a bloody cheek as we were walking home, without realising she was right behind me. Don't think she'll ask again!

When DD (22) was at school, people brought in wine, flowers or chocolates if they wanted to and the teachers were grateful. There was none of this numerous staff nonsense. The teacher shared out what they got. Hundreds of pounds for individual teachers is just OTT and shouldn't be allowed or accepted IMO. Or it could be put into the school funds so we're not constantly badgered for money.

Holymolymackerel · 20/07/2019 17:57

£11 each on both teachers, £1 on each teaching assistant and £15 on a big bag of chocolate bars for support staff of which there are many.

ohtheholidays · 22/07/2019 23:41

Well I've finally found the time and I've sorted the teachers,TA's and Headmistresses presents.

I've bought 4 boxes of chocolates for £24
6 bunches of flowers for £24,thankyou Lidl
4 Costa cards with £10 on each so £40
1 Debenhams card with £15 on
1 nice tin with assorted boiled sweets in(that teacher doesn't like chocolate)for £5

So the presents have come to £108(slightly more than I realized)but the school has been amazing so it's well deserved,we've also bought tons of lovely big cakes for all of the teachers,ta's and the receptionists that are going to be put into the staff room because it's the last of our 5DC to attend the primary as she's going upto secondary school.

My daughter wanted to give all her teachers gifts one year - about six of them across the subjects, plus a couple TAs. We made fudge, put them in little plastic bags with pretty ribbon. Job done and cheap but showed she went to the effort.
This last year son leaving school only wanted to give his head of year a gift £25 special vodka. Daughter said none of her teachers deserved a gift this year!!

Stravapalava · 22/07/2019 23:47

Only a £3 box of chocs for DD1's teachers as I've not been impressed with them this year.

Various lovely vouchers for DD2's preschool key worker & various preschooler class teachers as she's off to big school in September & it's the end of an era! £50 in all I think.

GreenTulips · 22/07/2019 23:56

Teachers have to log gifts over £20 and shouldn’t accept gifts at a higher value Incase their integrity is compromised

RiftGibbon · 23/07/2019 07:55

Green - the higher value stipulation applies to individual gifts. One parent giving the teacher £40 of M&D vouchers isn't allowed but £90 from a class collection is (usually - unless only 3 people contributed & specified such on the gift).

A few years ago I organised a class collection for the teacher. We got £120 in vouchers for a particular shop we knew she liked. All was fine and she was very appreciative as she was able to buy herself something she wouldn't have normally spent money on (fancy perfume).

TravellingSpoon · 23/07/2019 08:02

£20 for DS, who has a teacher and 3 TA's, got them Costa vouchers. Then some chocolates for his bus driver and the 2 escorts.

About £6 total on DD's teachers, craft stuff as she makes her end of year gift.
