So we should be washing our pants at 60 degrees.

This morning cleaning expert says our pants should be washed at 60 degrees. How does that work then? If you've to wash the rest of your gear (apart from towels etc which I wouldn't wash with ma pants anyway) at a lower temp, are we just supposed to save up 50 pairs of dirty pants until you have a full load of dirty knickers? It's all very confusing you know ...

I wash towels and tea towels separately from other garments as I don’t use fabric softener on them.

I only wear my bras once before they go in the washing basket but they only get washed about once every 2 weeks.

Bedding has its own wash as it fills up the drum by itself.

Everything gets washed at 40 unless it’s particularly delicate, then it goes on lower.

Sorry did I miss something....what IS the big risk being posed to human health by this? Sub-Saharan Africa is battling Ebola, yet we clutch pearls over pants at 40 degrees.....

lljkk · 17/07/2019 06:20

The cooties in your less-than-sterilised knickers will creep out and turn you & loved ones into spotty monsters, MrsG. Obviously(!)

longwayoff · 17/07/2019 07:22

Just mis-read pants as parts. I winced Confused

Mikki69 · 17/07/2019 08:00

I use a capful or two Zoflora in the wash! Lavender scent is lively on bed-linen. I use it on work uniforms and sports kit with 'Halo' laundry detergent at 40'c.

StephanieSJW · 17/07/2019 11:19

Zoflora ??? My front bottom bacteria would laugh at that!!

The only safe process is

  1. Soak overnight in vinegar
  2. Soak for a 2nd night in Dettol
  3. Soak for 3rd night in Domestos
  4. Wash four times at 95 Celsius
  5. Line Dry
  6. Burn them!!!
  7. Bury the ashes in steel drums
  8. Sink the steel drums at the bottom of a lake / lagoon or near a coral reef
Skyejuly · 17/07/2019 11:32

Hahaha! I wouldnt use zoflors either

EditorBTSMag · 17/07/2019 11:42

60 degrees and lots of separate washes? - sounds like this expert is not listening to the environmental warnings.

Pre-soak pants and other items as needed in cold water or boiled water left form the kettle after your am cup of coffee
Wash all items as little as possible
Wash on the quickest cycle as possible
If you can afford it use eco friendly detergents
If not use half the detergent and save money too
Then hang them out to dry on the line outside or a hanger inside
Ironing? Iron as little as possible: Life is too short for ironing LOL!

caringcarer · 17/07/2019 12:00

I wash all whites at 60 including towels, white school polo shirts, white knickers and bras and all bedding. I can make 3 60 washes each week. Other things get washed at 40 or 50.

4cats2kids · 17/07/2019 12:46

My gran used to put her undies in a pan and boil them!

HMArsey · 17/07/2019 13:03

I'm not bothered about germs at all, but some of my sweatier items smell if they're not washed at 60.

Rachelover40 · 17/07/2019 13:36

I'd never heard of Zoflora but googled and see it is disinfectant. Is there anything special about it?

I'd also not heard of Method but, again, googled and see it is a range of soap and detergent products. Is Method particularly special?

I have a mixed colour, low temperature, load on at the moment but nothing is grimy so should be alright. I felt I ought to do that after three 60deg loads yesterday. I feel quite virtuous!

SheWoreRedVelvet · 17/07/2019 14:43

All bedding, towels, socks and pants washed at 60 (not all together). Everything else washed at 40.

I separate into darks, coloured, lights and whites.

caperplips · 17/07/2019 14:46

We wash towels, teatowels and facecloths at 90 as I don't think they're properly clean otherwise. I noticed that the towels / teatowels had a slight musty smell when they were wet from use. Now they still smell fresh when they're used.

I wash knickers, socks and jocks at 60 or sometimes 90 depending on my mood

Duvet covers & sheets at 60 or 90 also

Everything else at 30

PianoPiano · 17/07/2019 14:52

I am not sure why everyday bras need to be washed every day, but "party bras" don't.

Honeysuckleandroses · 17/07/2019 15:44

@Rachelover40
Method are environmentally friendly products with natural ingredients. You can but it in most supermarkets now. I use a lot of their products and find them good.

I still want to know why no one else's stuff shrinks at 60 degrees never mind 90! I would never wash anything at 90.

MadMadaMim · 17/07/2019 15:48

Underwear, towels, tea towels, face cloths, dishwasher cloths, cotton shirts, cotton socks, bedding - all washed at 60.

swimwithaview · 17/07/2019 22:24

swimwithaview · 17/07/2019 22:25
