So we should be washing our pants at 60 degrees.

This morning cleaning expert says our pants should be washed at 60 degrees. How does that work then? If you've to wash the rest of your gear (apart from towels etc which I wouldn't wash with ma pants anyway) at a lower temp, are we just supposed to save up 50 pairs of dirty pants until you have a full load of dirty knickers? It's all very confusing you know ...

Also the pants trousers thing is sometimes in the UK but most common up north. I had never heard a UK person referring to trousers as pants until I visited the north.

Also not concerned about people that wear daily panty liners exactly but I am slightly confused. I don’t understand why someone would want to wear a panty liner every day when surely they change their underwear every day.

urbanlife · 16/07/2019 17:44

I wash my underwear at 40c, at 60c all my pants would be ruined.
White towels and bedding always 60c sometimes 90c
Delicates on a wool wash

I don't consider myself to be unclean, I shower twice a day etc - so boil washing pants must be for those with hygiene issues I would expect or those in need of a visit to a certain clinic Grin

dementedpixie · 16/07/2019 17:45

This has been a thread in itself many times. I do shower and change my pants daily but some women are more moist than others so I like to have a panty liner as back up so pants/trousers dont get damp

Winniethepee · 16/07/2019 17:45

Jaysus,Mary & Joseph...more first world problems....

EffedUp · 16/07/2019 17:46

Love these threads. I am genuinely fascinated by what everyone does!

I wash everything on cold except for towels, bedding and hand wash silks. I have lived to tell the tale & I am rarely ill too.

Parker231 · 16/07/2019 17:47

I wash everything at 30 - jeans, shirts, underwear, towels, bedding. Everything comes out clean and it’s more environmentally friendly. No need to use high temperatures to get things clean.

DanceItOut · 16/07/2019 17:48

Damp through the underwear to the trousers 😮 wow...I don’t envy women with that issue. I hate panty liners I find them sweaty and uncomfortable so the idea of being so moist down there that I would need to wear them all the time is horrid.

janj2301 · 16/07/2019 17:54

I have a huge American top loading washing machine, cold feed and no heating element. Use a powder that cleans at 30 degrees. I do a coloured wash for everything except hubby's shirts they get their own wash, still at 30 degrees

Rachelover40 · 16/07/2019 17:57

Most things I wash at 60deg anyway, one pair of my pants is currently in the machine with hand and bath towels and a couple of bath mats, they are all pastel coloured so quite alright to be washed together.

I agree, it's gross (& TMI). Surely there is something that can be done about that, if it was me I'd see a gynaecologist.

I googled and found this! www.ebay.co.uk/itm/2-X-Hamdard-Majun-Mochras-125g-useful-whitish-yellowish-discharge-from-vagina/183773939130?hash=item2ac9c7c5ba:g:WhIAAOSw7tNcsv4m

No idea if it works but I would think it does no harm.

placemats · 16/07/2019 18:00

Wont someone please think of the environment?

Rachelover40 · 16/07/2019 18:00

PS: I'm not advocating use of that product, I just found it and thought it might be interesting to some women.

LisaD76 · 16/07/2019 18:00

Dont use a laundry bag for your bras ... I wash mine after one use but do a weekly load, I do them up, lay them
In machine and put it on a hand wash cycle.... I have had some of my bras 10 years plus.... not out of shape, no wires dislodged .... I also dry them on hangers to help with shape retention

lindyloo57 · 16/07/2019 18:01

I mostly wash everything at 40, every once or two weeks I do a 60 for towels, I always wash bras by hand, it doesn't take long, they last so much longer specialy if wired, I have some bras over 5 years old,( I do have a lot, i used to work in lingerie shop, got lots of freebies the reps at that time were really generous)

Rachelover40 · 16/07/2019 18:02

I think I do on the whole, not quite sure what you mean. What else should we be doing, laundry-wise?

Abuelan · 16/07/2019 18:02

Have always washed my underwear on 60 / half load - think I might be the odd one out. Maybe it’s to do living in hot climate 😳🤦🏻‍♀️🤪

cannotfindanickname · 16/07/2019 18:04

In Colombia they wash everything on cold. Shower in cold water too. Water is only heated for cooking. They all seem just as healthy as we are in the Uk

Tinkerbelle57 · 16/07/2019 18:05

I separate everything and have different washes and spin speeds depending on fabrics. I wash my towels, tea towels and some bedding on 60, blacks on a cold or 30 wash, mixed colours on a 30 or 40. Bras go into a delicate wash with other delicate items. Knickers are usually done on a 40.

Nicolette42 · 16/07/2019 18:07

And just to show that there really isn't any agreement on this issue, BBC runs an item 'Is Stella McCartney right - should we stop washing our clothes?' in direct response.

If Lynsey Crombie on This Morning were right about the bacteria issue, then judging by the responses on mumsnet, we would be a lot sicker than we are. Unless someone has a seriously compromised immune system, then Lyndsey's advice is over the top.

People get dirty in different ways - toddlers, office workers, miners, athletes, menstruating women experiencing an 'accident' (haven't we all there sometime :-) So we just need to make choices appropriate for the person and their circumstances. But for the sake of the environment, less often and at lower temperatures would be better.

ThumbWitchesAbroad · 16/07/2019 18:14

I wash knickers at 50 degrees because I specifically bought a machine that WILL do a 50 degree wash precisely for this reason.

60 degrees tends to trash the elastic, IME. And 40 isn't good enough.

RavenLG · 16/07/2019 18:16

I just used soap nuts for the first time today so I don’t have the inclination to be fannying around with a separate pants wash!

ThumbWitchesAbroad · 16/07/2019 18:17

Danceitout - some of us don't have the pelvic floor control we used to any more. Sneezing, coughing fits, even laughing sometimes can result in leakage. Liners prevent pissy pants.

Myriade · 16/07/2019 18:19

I have to say, this is one of those threads where I wonder how the human race managed to survive at all Grin All those germs we were in contact with!

Glitter99x · 16/07/2019 18:22

As long as they are mixed with water and the detergent no matter what form, they will get clean. I used to not even select a temperature, it was just a cold wash, now I wash at 40 degrees. The only things I don't wash with the rest of my clothes/reusable face wipes, is my uniform including my uniform hats. As I work at mcdonalds, and they get the smell of oil and fat inside them.

HopelessLayout · 16/07/2019 18:35

While we're talking about laundry, does anyone know how to get yellow stains out of collars? I've tried: several different commercial stain removers (including that disgusting orange-smelling one that was banned), chalk, bleach, peroxide, lemon juice, washing-up liquid and…washing at 60 degrees!

Not all at the same time, although that could be next.

browneyes77 · 16/07/2019 18:39

Used to wash my white underwear at 90 degrees as I was always under the impression you should wash them at this temp to get rid of bacteria. I now wash at 60 degrees with other white things like bath robe, bed sheets etc.

Tend to wash my white underwear once or twice a week once I get to the last couple of pairs of pants Grin
