So we should be washing our pants at 60 degrees.

This morning cleaning expert says our pants should be washed at 60 degrees. How does that work then? If you've to wash the rest of your gear (apart from towels etc which I wouldn't wash with ma pants anyway) at a lower temp, are we just supposed to save up 50 pairs of dirty pants until you have a full load of dirty knickers? It's all very confusing you know ...

I separate everything and have different washes and spin speeds depending on fabrics. I wash my towels, tea towels and some bedding on 60, blacks on a cold or 30 wash, mixed colours on a 30 or 40

Same

sunshine11 · 16/07/2019 18:45

Wash everything at 60. Separate colours from whites but that’s it. I’ve a 14kg machine!

Thisisnotreallymyname · 16/07/2019 18:46

Undies etc @ 30 degs
General 40 degs,
Sheets , Towels 60 degs.
Handwash bras

beingmum39 · 16/07/2019 18:50

I mix everything together.. it's clean enough at 40!! Unless we all want to ruin the environment even more.. oh and shrink our knickers...

BenjiB · 16/07/2019 18:54

I wash everything at 30. Some clothes in our house are worn for 10 minutes before they’re plonked in the laundry. I only ever use 60 if something is really dirty or for the white wash which I do once a week for all the kids school shirts.

Tiredand · 16/07/2019 19:04

How did our predecessors survive? And live to ripe old ages too. I’m off the a bit of dirt doesn’t hurt and builds up resistance school of thought.

onegiftedgal · 16/07/2019 19:10

Everything gets washed at 30 degrees and dried outside or aired in the utility room. Never tumble dry, it's horrible.
Wash a bra when it's been worn approx 4 times unless particulary hot weather.
People are washing clothes too often and too high. Have you seen the amount of plastic fibres that come off from clothes washing? This ends up in your drinking water. The BBC doc War on Plastic should hopefully open people's eyes a little.

Lulu49 · 16/07/2019 19:11

I always used to wash my knickers separately to my other clothes cos I used to not use fabric conditioner on them. I literally have dozens of pairs so yes I saved them up! Lol. Didn’t wash at 60 though, No need and it ruins them

oyoyoy · 16/07/2019 19:12

Anything with bodily fluids on needs to be washed on a cool/cold wash. If washing at high temperatures, the stain(s) will set. I pretreat the LOs soiled vests in a bit of vanish and then everything goes in at once on a 40 wash if white or 30 wash if coloured.

Daisydoo8 · 16/07/2019 19:12

Jeez I've been doing it wrong for 40 years. I dont wash my bras every day as they ruin and I only do dark wash, light wash mostly on 30 degrees but if I feel flush 40 degrees. And everything mixed together. Shoot me.... as obviously germs havent seen me off.

SunshineCake · 16/07/2019 19:13

My bras are washed after every wear. Always have always will.

Bedding, towels, shirts and PE kit washed at 60 with detox laundry cleanser added.

Normal clothes at 40.

frumpety · 16/07/2019 19:14

Pants go in at 30, 40 or 60 depending on what other washing they have been slung in with. I only wear pants on the bit of my body they are designed to be worn on, I at no point give the gusset a lick or a chew, either before or after washing. I wear clean ones every day. I am genuinely intrigued as to what terrible illness might befall me if I chose not to change my slovenly ways ?

I am though comfortable with the fact that I am absolutely teeming with bacteria both inside and out Smile

MaximusHeadroom · 16/07/2019 19:16

We do washable nappies and I do them at 30 with a prewash as 60 wrecks the elastic.

I also read somewhere that most machines don't maintain the water at 60 degrees long enough to actually kill the germs.

oyoyoy · 16/07/2019 19:17

Maybe the "expert" has privates riddled with genital warts and weeping yeast infections and a tapeworm living in their fudge tunnel and think everyone else does as well?

🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮

Jessie94 · 16/07/2019 19:19

Even my cloth sanitary pads only go on a 30 degree quick wash after a rinse!

Nanny0gg · 16/07/2019 19:36

30 degree wash doesn't kill any bacteria as far as I'm aware. I'd never do towels, bedding, underwear or socks at that temperature.

ThighsRelief · 16/07/2019 19:36

Shoot me.... as obviously germs havent seen me off

OK, where do you want to meet?

Nanny0gg · 16/07/2019 19:37

And never, ever for nappies! Envy

isabellerossignol · 16/07/2019 19:41

Low temperatures might not kill germs but if you're worried about germs you don't really need to kill them anyway, just remove them from what they're on. They might still be alive but presumably they're washed off and down the drain to a large extent?

Having said that, I regularly do a hot wash for towels because it stops the washing machine getting all smelly...

Socksontheradiator · 16/07/2019 19:44

Never occurred to me that washing is meant to kill germs. You wash them off, mostly, I think. I think people have become obsessed with killing germs.

Mamamooligans · 16/07/2019 19:52

Considering cloth nappies are usually fine on a 40(a 60 if they've been ill etc). I'd say obviously not lol!
Always washed mine on a cold, occasionally a 30 and no illnesses here! Nonsense.

GenevaMaybe · 16/07/2019 19:58

I used to work for a laundry brand doing product development.
Yes underpants/knickers should be washed on high temps or tumble dried to kill bacteria from fecal matter.
You need to hit 60 degrees to kill them off.
If you’re the kind that uses their towel to dry their bum in a flossing motion then bung that in too.

Theknacktoflying · 16/07/2019 19:59

If you are using a biological powder anything over 40 degrees will render the enzymes ineffective ...

Holymolymackerel · 16/07/2019 20:00

Everything and I mean everything is washed at 60 degrees here.

BelfortGabbz · 16/07/2019 20:08

All white cotton sheets/towels/underwear at 60
Colours at 40
Delicates/wool at 30...sometimes handwashed

Never mix whites and colours, like my whites to stay bright white.
Throw back to DM teaching me how to wash
