So we should be washing our pants at 60 degrees.

This morning cleaning expert says our pants should be washed at 60 degrees. How does that work then? If you've to wash the rest of your gear (apart from towels etc which I wouldn't wash with ma pants anyway) at a lower temp, are we just supposed to save up 50 pairs of dirty pants until you have a full load of dirty knickers? It's all very confusing you know ...

If you are using a biological powder anything over 40 degrees will render the enzymes ineffective

most washers are cold fill. so the bio enzymes have plenty of time to work. and once they are inactive due to the heat the 'soap' part takes over.

Betty777 · 16/07/2019 20:49

I've always washed everything together, depending only on colour.
usually at 30 or 40 (except when DC was potty training)

I was raised by a mother who was clean but sensible. We were exposed to some germs, and I get sick far less than most people I know.

Nearly47 · 16/07/2019 21:09

I think if you wash underwear at 60 degrees the elastic would shrink

Lozz22 · 16/07/2019 21:21

@Barbarafromblackpool same here!!

Mary54 · 16/07/2019 21:24

Have washed everything on 30 for years. No problems. Most lingerie manufacturers do not recommend washing underwear any hotter than that. I can only think the ‘expert’ may have been referring to men’s cotton underwear which always used to be boiled and ironed to kill germs

"My bras pass under my armpits but because there is always at least layer of tshirt/blouse/dress between the bra and my smelly pits I don’t feel the need to wash them daily."

Imanamechangeninja you wear your bra over your clothes?!

amispeakingenglish · 16/07/2019 21:27

Crikey, I hardly ever wash my bras as also have a similar annoying size and have to go to Bravissimo, with 2 dds still at uni I have to buy their bras too so mine will last longer if not washed often as are also odd size. I vary my wash, everything was in at 40 with Sains disinfectant wash, since I heard that article too, now do pants at 60 when there are a lot from 3dd and 1ds, put them in laundry bags so don't get mixed up as can't always remember whose are whose. Wash bedding at 60 always and every now and then at 75. I used bio for whites too as fed up with grey whites.

Benjispruce · 16/07/2019 21:29

If they’re white they go in on 60 with other whites. Colours and blacks in at 40. Never had an infection down below.

Benjispruce · 16/07/2019 21:30

Bras get washed every couple of weeks unless it’s a hot day and I sweat.

Benjispruce · 16/07/2019 21:31

I’ve always used non bio

JonSnowIsALoser · 16/07/2019 21:34

Isn’t obsession with bacteria and overwashing and disinfecting everything one of the reasons for so many allergies around?

I wash black and coloured clothes at 30, white clothes including most underwear at 40, bedding and towels at 50, sometimes 60. And I never tumble dry. Everything is perfectly fresh and clean, and clothes last long without looking worn out.

I sometimes think the ‘experts’ telling you to wash at 60 are sponsored by fast fashion companies, so you’ll need to replace your clothes more often.

WhoatemyLindtbunny · 16/07/2019 21:41

I’ve washed gym stuff and bedding/towels at 60 forever. Gym stuff just smells of BO if you don’t. Starting putting pants and socks in last year to make up a full load.

Everything else 40 unless it’s delicate.

BelfortGabbz · 16/07/2019 21:49

My friend ruins loads of clothes by sticking them all in together. White expensive shirts get slung in with jeans etc, then she wonders why they look 30 years old after one wear.

Funguy · 16/07/2019 21:56

I clean my pants with a oxy-acetylene torch.
Just so I don't get thrush.

Other people’s laundry habits will never cease to amaze me.

DaftHannah · 16/07/2019 22:21

We do a weekly wash of all coloured pants, socks and pyjama bottoms at 60 degrees. They all go in the tumble dryer together and that's it for another week.

All towels go in together once a week at 60 degrees, including towelling bathrobes, all coloured though.

DH's work shirts all go in together at 40 once a week and we have a one hour cycle for this on our machine.

I keep my own delicate stuff aside to wash separately at 30, as DH would put my work blouses through at 60 given half the chance.

When we had now grown DCs at home, our washer was on every day for sportswear and DD nursing uniforms. DD used towels once and discarded these. Now that she lives away from us, she can apparently hang her towels up to dry and re-use these.

TigerTooth · 16/07/2019 22:22

Pants and towels and bedding all at 60
If white.

geniema · 16/07/2019 22:28

That was proper funny!

FaveNumberIs2 · 16/07/2019 22:29

Oh ffs! Today's detergent is enough to clean everything.

We've been around for thousands of years and haven't died out yet, forget the experts and just wash how you like.

ThighsRelief · 16/07/2019 23:10

It's a science.

Finding the correct balance of saponification v fannification.

Tigger365 · 16/07/2019 23:13

Some people do need a hobby or a really good shag. Starting with her off the telly 🙄

nakedscientist · 16/07/2019 23:31

The trouble is water only get to 100oC. If you pop your undies in the deep fat fryer for 10 mins, there will be little in the way of organic life left inhabiting them. Irradiation is effective too, but avoid wearing them during the process.

Microwaving mini briefs can also be effective but put slow since you need to dampen ( if not already moist) and frazzle for 3 mins on 1200 W, one at a time.

Fannies can be fumigated with flowers of sulphur and cress added for natural freshness. Mustard gas will remove any human contaminants with a tincture of Arsnic for bad breath.

Trickyteens · 16/07/2019 23:32

In any case, sunlight is a natural bleach.

nakedscientist · 16/07/2019 23:36

The sunlight in my area is not working properly then, it's making me brown 😁

ThighsRelief · 17/07/2019 00:20

Naked I wondered why your knickers felt so crispy, I didn't like to mention it. I thought you weren't well and had been ironing. Glad to hear you have been deep fat frying them. Did you add drizzle?
