WHAT is breathing in DS's room??

The other day, DS7 told us that he could hear something breathing in his room at night. He doesn't believe in ghosts (thank God) but is understandably freaked out.

He told me again tonight that he could hear it, so first I lay in his bed and listened, then we both did and held our breath. I think I heard something...Like very quiet breathing, a bit like when our dog is deeply asleep, but I couldn't hear it clearly and couldn't tell where it was coming from or what was causing it.

Checked DS room thoroughly, including under his bed, to try to reassure him, but it didn't work and he's now asleep in my bed for the time being.

DH and my best guess is it's coming from next door, as noise does carry from there. No idea what though. Ideas please!

Oh, and as I was writing this, DDog just howled in her sleep and scared the crap out of me.

Can you mimic the sound with your own breath, to see if it's a rhythmic breathing pattern? Or would you have to breathe slower/faster than natural?

I don't know what a "Rachel" is?!

Is just an air vent that varies according to how the wind is blowing?

RosaWaiting · 14/07/2019 21:46

"If he starts talking about the Bent Neck Lady I'm putting him on eBay."

he can keep me company then - I am so not over that!! (I mean her, not the actual reveal).

How old is your house?

I have a fan on atm because it’s so warm- maybe something that could be heard next door.

JesusInTheCabbageVan · 14/07/2019 21:47

Window in DS room always shut at night. No vents etc. Hard to reply to everyone, but so far nothing is sounding likely, sorry.

Going to bed now, will be back tomorrow if I haven't been axe murderered.

Are you semi-detached? Could it be a fan in the room next door? Especially if it’s an oscillating one, every time it points at the adjoining wall it might sound like a little sigh.

I don't know what a "Rachel" is?!

There’s an active thread running by an OP who’s found a sketch of ‘Rachel’ under her bed for which she has no idea how it got there.

ThreadKillerSleepsInACoil · 14/07/2019 21:52

Yes, maybe a rotating fan next door? That might account for the sound variation. Air conditioning? Radiator in need of bleeding?

Dammit OP, you can't go to bed now, I'm way over invested!

QueenBeex · 14/07/2019 21:52

I've never heard a neighbour breathe through the wallHmm

itsnotmyparty · 14/07/2019 21:52

Our fridge makes noises like a breathing pattern

crankyassnoperope · 14/07/2019 21:54

Oh yeah, someone else said clock! I've just remembered I had this exact thing at uni and it was the ticking of a second hand going round the clock.

PancakeAndKeith · 14/07/2019 21:55

Can you hear it during the day?

Can it be someone snoring next door?

spaniorita · 14/07/2019 22:07

I'm not suggesting there's a fox in you house. But when they're screeching in the woods or wherever quite a way away it goes sound just like someone breathing deeply I wouldn't rule it out. Have a listen outside and see if it's louder.

SmiledWithTheRisingSun · 14/07/2019 22:09

Neighbour snoring?

Purpleheadgirl · 14/07/2019 22:15

? A bird or mouse etc in the chimney breast

CazM2012 · 14/07/2019 22:20

Are you sure it’s not a toy? Some of the toys I’ve bought have done breathing type noises especially when running out of batteries!

Nonnymum · 14/07/2019 22:20

If you have adjoining walls I would say next door. I am always surprised by how much I can hear from next door when all is quiet.

Sarahandco · 14/07/2019 22:32

Has your neighbour got a fan running in the room next door? if it rotates it could sound like breathing

saladf1ngers · 14/07/2019 22:48

Could just be a plain old ghost.

saladf1ngers · 14/07/2019 22:50

Please can someone link me to the Rachel thread?

LovelyCocksReg · 14/07/2019 22:55

Definitely Rachel. Or Bent Neck Lady.

Terrysyogurt · 14/07/2019 22:57

Wasp nest in wall cavity.

RosaWaiting · 14/07/2019 23:00

Terry why would a wasp nest make that noise?

I've had a wasp nest in that situation and there was no noise. Lots of wasps, but no noise!

Bouledeneige · 14/07/2019 23:00

When I was a teenager I thought I heard this. It turned out it was both my parents snoring.

bingbongnoise · 14/07/2019 23:00

Agree to the possibility of a wasps nest in the wall cavity.
