WHAT is breathing in DS's room??

The other day, DS7 told us that he could hear something breathing in his room at night. He doesn't believe in ghosts (thank God) but is understandably freaked out.

He told me again tonight that he could hear it, so first I lay in his bed and listened, then we both did and held our breath. I think I heard something...Like very quiet breathing, a bit like when our dog is deeply asleep, but I couldn't hear it clearly and couldn't tell where it was coming from or what was causing it.

Checked DS room thoroughly, including under his bed, to try to reassure him, but it didn't work and he's now asleep in my bed for the time being.

DH and my best guess is it's coming from next door, as noise does carry from there. No idea what though. Ideas please!

Oh, and as I was writing this, DDog just howled in her sleep and scared the crap out of me.

spaniorita "But when they're screeching in the woods or wherever quite a way away it goes sound just like someone breathing deeply I wouldn't rule it out. "

Foxes screaming just sound like foxes screaming....if it's far away it's still a high pitched noise.

I do wonder about the neighbour snoring. My neighbour snores and sleeps about 11 hours at a time. I am well jeal! Grin

We have had a wasps nest in the cavity before, and there were weird scratchy hissy noises (very faint,) which could be mistaken for breathing now and again.

bellagood · 14/07/2019 23:03

@JesusInTheCabbageVan

One thing in my house that sounds like it is breathing, is the router for our internet, when we are streaming something (eg, watching netflix, or amazon prime, or bbc iplayer etc...) So is there a router anywhere near???

If not then that is creeeeeeeeeeeeeeepy AF!!!!!! Shock

SLEEP WELL! Grin Shock

Does he have blinds? We put up new blackout blinds which must have been a bit wider or closer to the window than the old ones. I lay in bed that night on my own and as the night got quieter I started to hear breathing noises in and out and slight creaking. I was absolutely petrified with fear that someone was in the room, texted DH in a complete state to come home from work and lay there for a while in abject fear until I realised the new blinds were being sucked in and out gently by the draughty windows, not enough even to see but enough to make a very faint noise.

KeepFuckingOff · 14/07/2019 23:06

I can hear my neighbour snoring sometimes, maybe his room is next to the neighbours bedroom.

Terrysyogurt · 14/07/2019 23:06

My son said his walls were breathing and it was a wasp nest Shock

DontCallMeShitley · 14/07/2019 23:09

Traffic from a distant motorway or busy road can make a kind of hmmpphh noise if the wind is blowing in the right direction, regularly spaced cars could sound like breathing, it does here.

Cherrysoup · 14/07/2019 23:12

Following with interest. DH often says he can hear a low humming noise from next door, sometimes I think I can too, but I think I’m imagining it. He can hear frequencies I can’t. It’s a bit weird.

Our fridge makes noises like a breathing pattern Mine moos like a cow. Is yours a Beko too?

saladf1ngers · 14/07/2019 23:13

@bellagood omg you utter cow bag lol!!!!!

AlunWynsKnee · 14/07/2019 23:16

It's probably a bee or wasp nest.
I am a bit paranoid about them.

EugenesAxe · 14/07/2019 23:17

Very quiet noises I’ve heard in my bedroom have generally been from tech. Phone by the bed making pulses of very quiet sound, and VBox. He is young so probably has little of that stuff in his room, but worth a look?

PencilsInSpace · 14/07/2019 23:21

When I was a kid I had this - breathing noises whenever I lay down, sometimes really quite loud. Turned out it was the sound of my own pulse, amplified and distorted through a massive lump of earwax.

MrsGrammaticus · 14/07/2019 23:22

Bound to be a poltergeist that perished of respiratory disease OP.....come back to gasp it's disapproval at the living. Central heating? Air in radiator?

madcatladyforever · 14/07/2019 23:23

Eek you've got monsters for sure!

MrsGrammaticus · 14/07/2019 23:24

Faulty rad valve. Air in loft blowing around the hatch. House expanding or contracting after warm weather. Tinnitus. Faulty light bulb.

MrsGrammaticus · 14/07/2019 23:25

Turn the fuse box off briefly ...does it stop, if so it's electrical.

bellagood · 14/07/2019 23:26

@saladf1ngers bellagood you utter cowbag LOL!

WHAT is breathing in DS's room??
Twotome · 14/07/2019 23:28

Wind through a vent?

Al2O3 · 14/07/2019 23:29

It’s coming from him. It will be his nasal hairs amplifying the sound as her exhales or inhales. He has been conscious of only one movement, but now he is starting to focus on the sounds, he can hear the other movement and is unable to work it out. It can be quite freaky, but obviously not harmful! Pencils post is also worth considering as it also starts with your DS’s physiology.

Judashascomeintosomemoney · 14/07/2019 23:35

I’ve been thinking that there was an air lock vibrating or something in the radiator or water pipes in my bathroom for the last few days. Weird gurgling buzzing but barely audible, DH couldn’t hear it for instance but I could. Nope. It was the lightbulb, on the verge of blowing presumably. As soon as I removed it and changed it, noise gone. Des he have a night light or a light on in the hall/loo or something?

GrabbyGertie · 14/07/2019 23:35

I think the breathing will be him too.

Sunshineonleith12 · 14/07/2019 23:36

A neighbours fan was a good suggestion by a PP. If it's on rotate it could maybe sound like breathing?

spaniorita · 14/07/2019 23:36

@RosaWaiting - you are wrong!! they make a noise that sounds like someone deep breathing close by when they are far away, i swear it!! It's hard to explain but I be that's what it is.

Ah well, I didn't die. Have a good night, OP!

ThreadKillerSleepsInACoil · 14/07/2019 23:55

Also just thought of wasps, if the window frames or outer walls are wood they can make a sort of rasping noise... Always thought they were somehow scraping the wood to build their nests, but that's probably just me!

RosaWaiting · 15/07/2019 00:36

bella no no no no no.....

spaniorita I think your mum was just saying that. Eek.

In terms of hearing frequencies, I hear all sorts that others can’t hear. We had particular problems with a bird deterrent for pigeons on the opposite flats.... half the block was being driven mad by the noise and the others couldn’t hear a thing!

But both OP and her son hearing a breathing noise....maybe it is a wasp nest and I didn’t hear it because sound travels so differently.
