We have no food in the house and it's raining. I can't be bothered. Missing a meal will be good for them, right?

I deployed dp to the local chippy for pie and chips, he even took dd with him so I could shower in peace.

Seen someone mention turkey unicorns up thread, think turkey dinosaurs and micro chips might be on the menu this week

Pasta and butter with grated cheese? I love freezer and cupboard dinners. It forces you to use things up like random boxes with only 3 fish fingers, 2 nuggets etc. Satisfying to use stuff rather than buy more.

By the way, where are you if it’s raining? It’s scorching in London!

Mrsjayy · 13/07/2019 19:07

mrsjayy in fairness the book does not claim that French kids do not like fizzy drinks and sweets, cakes and biscuits.

Is the poster serious about giving kids a starter, salad, main and pud? Mine get a main. Sometimes the main is salad. Pud would be help yourself to fruit or yoghurt.

shieldmaidenofrohan · 13/07/2019 19:08

Excellent, SBP. My parents tried an indoor BBQ once in the 80s... once being the operative word. Took months to get the smell of smoke out of the conservatory furniture 🤣

StealthPolarBear · 13/07/2019 19:12

Ds doesn't like cheese unless its in pizza or in toastie :)
By indoor barbecue I do just mean ovening and grilling barbecue food. I'm not that brave!

My dp is also obsessed with buying condiments! Must be a man thing Confused

Beef and chicken? 🤢

not sure why that's such an outrageous concept?
Some people can't serve a main without 4 different types of veg, others have a starter and a main. I am sure both are fairly standards?

Even my kids schools has starters or side salads, despite having fairly crap school diners.

StealthPolarBear · 13/07/2019 19:37

Well the little brats have eaten all the prawns, chicken, sausages and halloumi. I can see them growing out of their pyjamas as I type.

You know what they say... Fed is best. Only best, not expected

I'm having this printed up as a motivational poster.

dementedma · 13/07/2019 19:46

My American friend often says, " The State decrees I have to feed my kids. It does not say how often"

British school dinners are nothing like french ones. I doubt there are many serving 4 courses. Obviously some/most do have a salad bar.

Contraceptionismyfriend · 13/07/2019 20:42

This is the part of parenting I hate. It's the constant needs. They expect to be fed every single day!
I'm sure they ate yesterday and they'll almost certainly eat tomorrow. How's that not good enough?!

AtleastitsnotMonday · 13/07/2019 20:53

You’ve missed an opportunity to educate your children on global cuisine. In your situation I always serve tapas. AKA all the little random bits, bobs and leftovers from the fridge.

S0CKS · 13/07/2019 20:59

My dh loves freezer so much we buy stuff purposefully that i put random food on trays in the oven and do him random teas.

S0CKS · 13/07/2019 20:59

*freezer suprise

Rachelover40 · 13/07/2019 21:12

I'm envious of you having some rain! We could really do with some here to cool everything down.

StealthPolarBear · 13/07/2019 21:15

Some rain? We have all the rain.

Enjoying this thread!
The mention of indoor barbecue reminded me of the one we had in a hospital bathroom when I was a junior doc. The smoke was so thick, we nicked surgical masks from theatre so we could rush in, turn the steaks, then rush out again and close the door.
At the end, we couldn’t get the flames to go out. And we were on the second floor, in the residents mess. Then one of the surgeons had a bright idea. He ran the fire hose down the corridor, kicked the door open and turned it on full blast.
The white tiled bathroom turned black, with charcoal sprayed up to the ceiling. We had to bribe the cleaners the next day not to report us! Happy days...

anothernotherone · 13/07/2019 21:37

that25cUKHeatwaveof2019 no, they do not.

I don't serve any bugger "a pud" or a starter. An everyday meal is one course, there is no earthly reason to create work and overfeed everyone every day unless you have far too much time on your hands and your children are in training for a marathon.

Camomila · 13/07/2019 21:40

I think she's probably serious Normal lunch and dinners are usually 3 course meals in Italy, including school dinners.

They are not very big portions though.
Standard dinner at my nonnas/aunties/cousins houses:
First course: Some kind of soup/broth/maybe minestrone/pastina (pasta in broth)
Second course:
Various veg or salad, bread and something proteiny like cheese/ham/salame
Pudding:
Fruit (by itself, or fruit salad, or maybe stewed apples) or a yoghurt. Homemade pie/cake if a special occasion.

PickAChew · 13/07/2019 21:53

We have all the rain even though we weren't forecast any rain. No rain on met office or accuweather and it was lovely when we left the house, mid morning, in clothes appropriate for the lovely day we were forecast. It started raining an hour later. Just drizzle, most of the time but it started pelting down just before 5. We're not forecast any rain right now but it's raining.

PickAChew · 13/07/2019 21:55

That's a lovely and very healthy way to eat @Camomila

I'd want my own nonna to prepare it al for me, though. I spend long enough in the kitchen, already.

jennymanara · 13/07/2019 21:56

We had home made soup from veg grown on an allotment, and strawberries and cream.
