Why am I scared of wind turbines?!

Had to drive through the countryside today and drove right past some wind turbines. They were so close and massive and I had no idea they were there until they were practically on top of me. They made me feel really weird and shaky - is this a real thing?! Didn’t help when DD said “ooh it looks like they’re following us”! Have never felt like this just seeing them in the distance.

Anyone else felt like this or just me?

I get this but with hydroelectric dams, not sure why, but driving past them I feel really sick and sweaty! Horrifying things. Not bothered by wind turbines though.

Knitwit99 · 13/07/2019 15:59

I'm really scared of swimming pools with wave machines.

I'm also freaked out by massive statues. The Statue of Liberty for example. I think it's their size. It knocks my sense of perspective all off and I feel dizzy.

Knitwit99 · 13/07/2019 16:00

And yes, hydro dams. I'd forgotten about those. I hate those too.

Finfintytint · 13/07/2019 16:00

Anemomenophobia.
It’s a thing.

FlibbertyGiblets · 13/07/2019 16:19

Wow I was going to say meglophobia maybe but omg there is an actual word for it.

Blutopia · 13/07/2019 16:21

I hate wind turbines too, no physical reaction just the sheer size - and the silence - weirds me out.

ShirleyPhallus · 13/07/2019 16:22

I feel like this about swimming over big anchors / large chains connecting the boat and then falling away in to the sea where I can’t see

All sort of wobbly and weird

Sparklingbrook · 13/07/2019 16:24

I am scared of windmills.

There's a museum where I was taken as a child where you go inside and see the workings. For some reason I was really creeped out by it.

I quite like the wind turbines though, just quietly doing their thing.

OneThreadOnly0101 · 13/07/2019 16:25

Big ships. Big ships in dry dock, or god forbid upside down in water 😱😱

I hear you with the creepy wind turbines.

heatherblue · 13/07/2019 16:25

Oh god yes! Wind turbines and dams are the work of the devil, and don't get me started on waterwheels. I thought I was the only one.

Sparklingbrook · 13/07/2019 16:26

Shudder.

Why am I scared of wind turbines?!
LauderSyme · 13/07/2019 16:27

I agree there is something really weird and discomfiting about wind turbines. Their massive size is part of it but it's not just that, though I can't really put my finger on it. They turn my stomach.

boughtnotbrought · 13/07/2019 16:27

I feel like this about the Angel of the North, gives me the absolute heebie jeebies!

Nonstopbuttmachine · 13/07/2019 16:29

They terrify me too in a Stephen King-esque way. I imagine them coming to life one night and destroying everything and everyone in their path.

aposterhasnoname · 13/07/2019 16:31

Me, I hate big things. Trains, the longer the worse. cruise ships, sky scrapers, wind turbines, planes, dams, pylons, those horrible huge cooler tower things. Anything huge and man made freaks me out.

Idratherhaveacupoftea · 13/07/2019 16:31

I absolutely love them. I find them incredibly calming.

OneThreadOnly0101 · 13/07/2019 16:39

And whales... Whales freak me out, those videos where people are kayaking and then a blue whale just pops up... I'd be dead. If I'm on a big boat, fine, but I can't imagine just floating around with one nearby 🤮

Icebergs... Especially the creepy underwater portion...

It's megalophobia for me, for sure.

I think it's to do with perspective. I feel sick, dizzy and panicked.

DramaAlpaca · 13/07/2019 16:41

They creep me out too, I find them really menacing for some reason.

SouthWestmom · 13/07/2019 16:47

Did you grow up watching the bbc series day of the triffids? This explains my fear of isolated countryside....

SpuriouserAndSpuriouser · 13/07/2019 16:48

Maybe because they are so big, that they make you feel very small?

Cheesymonster · 13/07/2019 16:48

Glad it’s not just me. Windmills i think are cute and I’ve never had this reaction before with statues or tall buildings. I’m going on a cruise soon and don’t have a reaction to the size of cruise ships, then it’s more of a “wow it’s so big” way so it’s definitely just wind turbines - just creepy for some reason!

This is exactly me too. I get it looking at statues that are larger than human size, if I'm upstairs in a theatre and I'm too close to the roof compared to normal, near anything I can't see the whole of or can't work out it's size and proportion.

It feels like a proper physical reaction rather than just a fear. But maybe all fears feel physical, I'm not sure.

LauderSyme · 13/07/2019 16:51

Yes, yes to massive anchor chains and big ships! I was going to mention it but thought I'd sound odd, glad I'm not alone in my oddness Wink

I have a proper phobia of big ship hulls. I was literally sick in the cinema once, years ago, when a trailer for Titanic came on and suddenly a huge pointy bow was heading straight for me.

Cheesymonster · 13/07/2019 16:51

OneThread I won’t post a pic but there is one of a small boat on top of a shadow of a huge whale. I found that fascinating instead of scary though.

I can understand icebergs being scary - this is outing cos I spoke about it with friends but when my Dad was recently in hospital there was a picture of an iceberg on his wall facing his bed. The underside of it looked like a skull under the water and the picture was massive, it was bloody horrible!
