Why am I scared of wind turbines?!

Had to drive through the countryside today and drove right past some wind turbines. They were so close and massive and I had no idea they were there until they were practically on top of me. They made me feel really weird and shaky - is this a real thing?! Didn’t help when DD said “ooh it looks like they’re following us”! Have never felt like this just seeing them in the distance.

Anyone else felt like this or just me?

In the 70s, there was a creepy children's tv programme about Pylons. It was sinister and some of that has transferred itself to wind turbines for me Shock

@OneThreadOnly0101

i’ve walked underneath a cruise ship in a dry dock. it was amazing, if a little terrifying...

Finfintytint · 13/07/2019 16:57

Sluj -yes. Scared to death of pylons.
Thank you 1970s Public Information Films.

origamiunicorn · 13/07/2019 17:01

Oooh I love wind turbines, they just look so peaceful. I try and imagine I'm living in a futuristic utopian society where pollution/fossil fuels don't exist when I drive past.

TheBrockmans · 13/07/2019 17:04

I find them rather hypnotic, and not in a good way when driving. I find it hard to ignore them. I don't find this with anything else, just wind turbines.

sluj · 13/07/2019 17:34

Just googled that tv series, it was called "The Changes" and was shown in 1975!! Obviously scarred me for life.

Finfintytint · 13/07/2019 18:16

Lonely Water.....shudder.

DramaAlpaca · 13/07/2019 19:06

Oh yes, pylons. Thanks to a 70s childhood I'm scared of them, too.

SamanthaJayne4 · 13/07/2019 23:37

We were on holiday and walked past a wind turbine to get to a wildlife park. I found it incredibly unpleasant close up but can't quite define what I don't like about it. I find them ok from a distance.

jonesyyy · 13/07/2019 23:49

I didn't know I was scared of wind turbines until I read this thread Sad

BoswellsBollocks · 13/07/2019 23:52

God yes!

Wind turbines, pylons, large expanses of water like reservoirs, dams, big statues all totally freak me out.

jonesyyy · 13/07/2019 23:55

Open water terrifies me..

nowifi · 13/07/2019 23:59

Submarines freak me out! And big ships too, could never go on a cruise!

drsausage · 14/07/2019 00:04

Really deep swimming pools.

jonesyyy · 14/07/2019 00:07

@drsausage I second that

Purpletigers · 14/07/2019 00:09

I’m terrified of open water . I blame Guy de Maupassant’s ‘Sur L’eau “. Freaking scary even in French .
We have a wind turbine on our farm so it’s just as well I don’t mind them . Ours is quite big and the kids plan to make for it when the apocalypse comes. They’ve both told their best friends to meet them there 😂

cherryblossomgin · 14/07/2019 00:11

I get like that around big pigs, boats, harbours, certain plastics, bridges and dark seas. Not sure why, supposedly your fears come from a past life.

DeadDoorpost · 14/07/2019 00:17

Are you my DM?? She hates, hates, hates wind turbines, says they're alien and look like they're about to come off and slice you up.

She loves windmills though.

Never realised I dislike giant anchors until I read the PP mention them. Cheers for that shudders

Bunnylady53 · 14/07/2019 00:27

I quite like wind turbines but have always hated pylons, even before that tv programme. Not keen on deep empty swimming pools either & dream about them quite often. I reckon a lot of this is from ancient primal fears.

PutYourShirtOnMartin · 15/07/2019 06:10

Pylons - anything 'big electric' as in substations. - I have to avert my eyes when going down the M6 at wednesbury....they are right next to the motorway
Egg cup cooling towers

I think this stems from a combination of 1970s public information adverts and the 1970s Telly programme 'changes'

I am also scared of stripy paper straws....

Watch out there's a Humphrey about...

Rachelover40 · 15/07/2019 06:18

They do look like something sinister out of a science fiction film. You can imagine them moving across the land independently whilst sending signals to creatures in outer space.

Bwekfusth · 15/07/2019 06:22

Won't turbines give me goosebumps, not the good sort. If I ever had to stand in a field amongst them I think I might vomit. I'm so glad I'm not the only one

NoLeopard · 15/07/2019 06:45

None of these weird me out in the daytime but at night when only the outline is visible I have real problems! I will take 10 mile detours just so I can avoid one 'monument' looming up and looking at me and possibly coming after me. I'm sweating just thinking about it.

BillThePony · 15/07/2019 07:23

I am like this with pylons, we are currently house hunting and found a house that ticked all the boxes, get there and find a massive pylon behind the house. I didn't stay.

CakeNinja · 15/07/2019 09:35

Huge boats in dry docks but especially submarines. I spent a lot of time in Plymouth when I was little with my grandad who was in the navy.
Oh my god, the sight of a submarine out of water has haunted me forever more.
I just googled megalophobia and the first picture that came up of the boat from the view of being in front of it looking up has made me properly shudder Shock
I really like wind turbines, chilling out, doing their thing!
