Mine are

  • the whoomph of hot air getting off the plane (am a slightly nervous flier so am also bloody glad to be getting off it!)
  • playing guess the nationality
  • having warm feet in flip flops

Listening to the different sounds at night time (insects/birds, not a lot of traffic).

TeenTimesTwo · 03/07/2019 12:43

not having to deal with the post

not having to meal plan

Canulation · 03/07/2019 12:44

We went to a lovely place one year where you could hear crickets I think- it was strangely soothing even although I am not a fan of insects.

Yes, it's the cricket noise I like more than any, would hate one near me though Grin

The fact that the ' to do list' that is constantly at the back of my mind while awake just dissapears while on holiday.

No more ' must remember to ...(send card/pay ds's lunch/feed plants/ arrange to meet so and so/renew insurance/ get mot done /meal plan/remind DS to ........etc.. etc...). It is bliss. My.mind goes quiet

notso · 03/07/2019 12:57

Getting up really early before the kids and DH wake up and swimming in the pool on my own.
Heavenly.

I also quite like going to the supermarket to see all the different foods they have.

Thebookswereherfriends · 03/07/2019 12:57

The break from daily drudge - having to think of meals to cook, ensuring the laundry is done, cleaning up every day. I very rarely book self catering because it feels too much like the same shit in a different location.

notangelinajolie · 03/07/2019 13:05

Having someone make my bed and clean my bathroom. Not having to think about what's for tea and having to make it. No washing up.
But the best bit by far is happening right now - drinking Pina Colada on my aft balcony at sailaway.

Canulation · 03/07/2019 13:07

I like sitting on the balcony before they all wake up too.

I am not ashamed to admit that I love a European supermarket. The German Haribo are 👌🏻

Having a sun downer on the beach.
No food prep just having to decide where to go for dinner.

TokyoSushi · 03/07/2019 13:07

Buying toiletries that I've wanted for ages, like the nicer shower gel and the nicer shampoo because it's 'for the holiday.'

Cheesymonster · 03/07/2019 13:07

No school run! I still get up early though and have a quiet coffee by myself before DH and DD get up.

Hopefullysmart · 03/07/2019 13:10

The minimalism aspect of it. Having just what I need for that duration.

ComtesseDeSpair · 03/07/2019 13:11

Waking up and it not mattering what time it is. I’m an early riser generally but even waking up at 7am and knowing I can do something or not do something and either is fine is great.

Wandering. No particular direction to take. I love exploring new places this way, recently I walked pretty much from one end of Manhattan to the other and across Philadelphia just soaking up what was around me. I live in London and always try and remind myself to do it at home when I have a couple of hours to kill.

Canulation · 03/07/2019 13:13

Think I might venture further from my balcony and go for a morning coffee alone too, reading these.

I am so looking forward to going away.

Not having to set an alarm! Just bliss

happystory · 03/07/2019 13:21

Star lit skies, you just don't get them in London

Winsomelosesome · 03/07/2019 13:21

The sun mostly, and the food. Sitting outside with a coffee watching the sunrise before anyone else is up. Going to the beach really early when it's deserted for a swim. Just so happens we're off on holiday tomorrow morning, I cannot wait not looking forward to the airport hell though.

historysock · 03/07/2019 13:23

Sea swims.
I hate swimming, except in the sea (abroad when it's hot, not here).

Canulation · 03/07/2019 13:24

I love the hot air rather than the sun. DH always laughs at me but I love the feeling of it on my shoulders :)

I was surprised on a recent holiday to India (the first time I’ve been to Asia) that in the early mornings the sand was cold but the sea was warm. As someone who spent all their holidays turning blue in the Irish Sea this was a revelation and I went out early every day just to check it was still the case. Warm water is definitely going to be a holiday luxury I seek from now on.

cptartapp · 03/07/2019 13:44

Eating outside.
And doing things with the teens that they wouldn't dream of at home, playing cards in the evening for example.

Sounds like my childhood!

Weeing in the sea

NakedBrainStrollingInManhatten · 03/07/2019 15:03

When I used to smoke it was getting up before everyone else and having a cigarette in my dressing gown, on the balcony with my book, some times I didn't even read it, just sat in silence enjoying the sun and the quiet.

One holiday DH and I had a very private villa and that year my secret joy was an early morning naked swim, then cigarette in my dressing gown.

Other holiday joys are:
having a shower before getting ready for dinner,
pre dinner cocktails,
having an afternoon sleep,
Getting eyelash extensions and a spray tan done before I go away and I feel like it's the summer version of Christmas eve.
Not wearing makeup in the day time.
