Recently bought a MacAir which is a thing of beauty and wonder. Am also gradually replacing cheap crockery with lovely Denby stuff.

I now buy good quality bras instead of M&S and more 'high end' makeup.

So I'm not talking houses, cars, horses etc. What have you bought/upgraded that you love so much more than the cheaper version and has been good value?

We like the look of the robo lawnmower for my in-laws. Their lawned area is massive though so not sure if it would be a good idea. Can anyone tell me the optimum size of garden they are best for? Thanks.

ZazieTheCat · 01/07/2019 08:37

I just bought a Roomba and a mopping robot. You vipers might have just saved my marriage!

HelloJuly · 01/07/2019 08:40

@squishee that lip balm is amazing. I got a small tin as a gift ages ago but couldn't find it to buy, so I'll keep looking!

HelloJuly · 01/07/2019 08:41

I have a cordless handheld dyson, the mattress cleaner one, altho my mattress says not to hoover it... I hate that you have to hold the button down to keep it on, not sure if all models are like that? Plus yes the battery doesn't last that long.

Notonaschoolnight · 01/07/2019 08:42

Miele White tabletop coffee machine £900 did my research and knew it was right for our needs but balked at the price now if it broke tomorrow I’d replace without a second thought

WhyDoesItAlways · 01/07/2019 08:47

For those lusting after the cordless Dyson, take a look at the shark too. I haven't used the Dyson so can't compare but I have the shark and love it.

MMMMMaria · 01/07/2019 08:49

Ohhh so many things to look up now! I’m a buy once but the best you can (usually in sales) type. So my best & v long lasting buys are:
Jura bean to coffee machine
Miele dishwasher (previous one was 9 yrs old and house buyers wanted it) current one is 12 yrs old and still brilliant.
Samsonite suitcases, latest ones are SO light and the 4 wheels means they are SO easy to move
Apple laptop and phones, last forever, do everything so easily! Can synch contacts & diaries w rest of family too
Korres shower gel (fig) is just fabulous andnI feel great daily when I use it m; skin not dried out as with others
Proper bras (Lepel, not M&S)
Quality handbags, they last forever
High thread count & linen sheets, a joy to lie on (White Co, Sleep & Soak, John Lewis, Yves Delorme)
Global knives
Le Creuset casserole
Quality china, porcelain is very tough!
Things you hold is one area I will always splurge as you touch/hold them everyday and when we’ll made they give real pleasure: cutlery by Robert Welch, door handles by Arne Jacobsen, wine glasses & tumblers by various.
☺️

my cleaner twice a week, best thing ever and by far my biggest non essential expense

TellYourDogISaidHi · 01/07/2019 08:55

A lay z spa the Monaco its a big 8 person tub, I thought I would hate it when other half bought it, but oh my god it is amazing we use it most days.
A swing seat for the garden. It is honestly so relaxing falling asleep in the fresh air listening to the birds while rocking.
A decent pen, takes the sting out of writing endless notes.
My beautiful dogs. They were actually free, but of course their upkeep is fairly expensive but I love the very life of them. They have brought unimaginable joy and love into all our lives.

What hair removal appliances, is laser better then a home appliance? What home appliance do you recommend?

Alsohuman · 01/07/2019 09:06

The £5k I spent on cataract surgery. Completely life changing. Best money I ever spent.

Amibeingdaft81 · 01/07/2019 09:14

Oh just thought
Private health Insurance
No words for how this has helped
And it costs me £40.63 a month for me AND my two children - and we have all utilised.

I would give up all my other luxuries before I gave up the peace of mind this gives me and the experience of private health

Afternooninthepark · 01/07/2019 09:14

Our touring caravan. It was quite an investment but we love it, we can go away at the drop of a hat. Last year we had 45 nights away.

runningtogetskinny · 01/07/2019 09:18

@RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie I have an All Saints leather jacket, bought with 20% off but worth every penny. Great cut, soft leather and I get compliments on it regularly from colleagues as well as young people I care for so presumably it looks good

sugarbum · 01/07/2019 09:25

Fancy sewing machine.
I make bags, which means I need something a lot sturdier than your standard machine most of the time.

I have spent years upgrading machines, then selling again, then trying something else. I've tried vintage machines which are generally more robust, but I just don't like working on them.
So after about 5 years of frustration with machines that just didn't cut the mustard/tick all the boxes, I took out a loan to buy a machine that cost £1500.
Its bloody brilliant. Its all paid off now. And they cycle has ended. I no longer need to keep searching.

DH thought I was bonkers to start with, but he is also relieved that I'm done with the swapping machines.

fedup21 · 01/07/2019 09:34

@Sugarbum which make for you buy, out of pure nosiness?

Housemum · 01/07/2019 09:37

helloJuly we had a Kinetico softener, it really stopped the limescale build up round the shower/bath etc. You need to have a hard water tap for drinking. The water supply goes through the softener unit and comes out softened. You need to use blocks of salt (cost about £5/month) - the salt doesn’t go into the water, but is somehow used in the process - I can’t pretend I understand it, something to do with ceramic beads and ion exchange! Softened water can’t be used to make up baby milk and for certain other conditions which is why they will usually install a little drinking water tap in your kitchen. Also softened water doesn’t taste nice! Apparently it’s because so much removed from it. I used to use it for cooking though.

pollysproggle · 01/07/2019 09:40

Dyson fan/air purifier

Robot vacuum

sugarbum · 01/07/2019 09:44

@fedup21 I bought a Janome 6700P

Sofasurfingsally · 01/07/2019 09:46

Got to be my large magimix. It has damn near raised a large family.

LovelyIssues · 01/07/2019 09:55

MAC make-up

Gonegrey31 · 01/07/2019 09:59

I needed cataract surgery and opted to have multi focal lenses. Life changing, no more glasses EVER!

Wavyheaded · 01/07/2019 10:07

I second what many have said already - the cordless Dyson, my Macbook pro retina and a really good bed! It's so worth it to splash out on a solid bed frame, the best mattress, pillows and duvet you can afford, it has made such a difference to the quality of my life.

Shea Moisture shampoo & conditioner - they may be £11 a bottle but they last ages and my hair is much better for it.

My Iphone 6s - still going strong after several years (so far). I have no need for another phone.

Good quality shoes I can actually walk in and don't hurt my knees - I never will go back to cheap, ballet flat rubbish again.

I also have an old heater by deLonghi, which I've had for years which was a lifesaver when my roof had holes in it and my bedroom was freezing. At only £50 from John Lewis 15 years ago, it's still going strong and deserves a gold medal for its service!

I also don't regret splashing out on a new roof, it seems to have solved so many problems that were in my flat - damp, weird noises, freezing bedroom, wobbly walls, it was definitely worth the money.

Alsohuman · 01/07/2019 10:20

Same here @Gonegrey31, worth every single one of those many pennies!

ziggiestardust · 01/07/2019 10:22

I don’t rate Dyson; I’ve always had quite bad luck with mine. When and if this one goes, I’m switching to Miele.

My iPhone 7 Plus. Nearly 3 years old and going strong, I won’t upgrade until this actually breaks.

Samsung washing machine and tumble drier; super strong and not had a single thing go wrong with their of them.

Rangemaster oven and hob. When bits break, you can so easily get replacement parts.

Simplehuman bin, it’s all separated so I don’t need to keep my recycling ‘on the side’ to take out.

Delonghi bean to cup coffee machine. It’s an absolute BEAST. Used several times daily for 6 years and I’ve not had it go wrong ever. So, so worth it.
