Do you wash your face with soap?

Disagreement here about face washing,

Person 1 was brought up to never use soap on the face

Person 2 says you should use soap/shower gel

Who is right

I've always used soap, then a tinted moisturiser. I'm told I have lovely skin.

CrowleysBentley · 29/06/2019 09:51

Bar soap is way too alkaline for facial skin. My face would fall off!

I use an oil or balm cleanser to remove sunscreen and makeup (body shop camomile balm, or dhc oil cleanser), followed by a gentle face wash to remove anything left behind (bioderma gel moussant in the pink bottle at the moment).

I used to just rinse my face in the morning, but I find I get sweatier/oilier at night now so wash with the bioderma face wash.

I do have fussy skin that's prone to spots if I use the wrong product though.

Gertie75 · 29/06/2019 10:14

I only use water or wet wipes, soap makes my face feel tight and dry.

madcatladyforever · 29/06/2019 10:26

I have washed my face with soap for the last 60 years and everyone says I have amazing unlined skin, however I don't personally think it matters one jot what you wash your face with its all down to genetics.

Branleuse · 29/06/2019 10:42

I use soap on my face and on my body. Shower gel is full of SLS which makes me itch and I dont feel clean with it either.
I have pretty good skin. I also rarely moisturise and only use sunscreen in the middle of summer if its really sunny. I basically put as little on my skin as I can get away with as I hate the feel of most of it.

FlamingoFlamenco · 29/06/2019 11:01

Plain cold water in the morning, and in the evening Cidal soap and luke warm water. Works for me. Never had any skin problems, and at nearly 60, it's still very smooth.

Jinglejanglefish · 29/06/2019 11:04

I only use soap if I have make up on, don't use wipes. I stopped bothering with face washes and cleansers a while ago.n

darklady64 · 29/06/2019 11:12

What do you think everyone used before the pharmaceutical companies decided to sell us extra face washing stuff? It's whatever works best for your own skin really. Some people find soap too drying, others are fine with it. There is no magic. Just use whatever you find best suits your skin.

Instagran · 29/06/2019 11:20

I only ever use plain water on my face, no soap or products. I just let the shower run on it. I only occasionally have the odd spot when my period is due.

SpunBodgeSquarepants · 29/06/2019 11:27

Aapri facial scrub in the bath/shower and Clearasil soap on my face before bed

rededucator · 29/06/2019 11:28

A cleaning face wash?

BarbedBloom · 29/06/2019 11:56

I oil cleanse, I have dry sensitive skin so could never use soap

notangelinajolie · 29/06/2019 12:03

The only thing that touches my face is water when I'm in the shower. No makeup, no moisturiser, no cleanser, toner or soap. I'm in my mid 50's and I have great skin - no wrinkles or spots.

CountFosco · 29/06/2019 12:13

I use soap but just water is fine, my DC don't use any soap yet and have lovely skin.

FudgeBrownie2019 · 29/06/2019 12:16

I use Erno Laszlo sea mud soap in the shower every morning and evening. It's amazing stuff and my skin loves it.

I never get spots, have fresh and healthy skin and look good for my age. I credit that with not meddling with too many potions; simple cleansing with something that suits has to be better than trying everything and overwhelming your skin.

soundsystem · 29/06/2019 12:17

What do you use on small DC? I just use a flannel and warm water, didn't occur that maybe I should use soap on their faces (they do use soap in the shower or bath on their bodies!)

I just use plain water in the morning and then I double cleanse in the evening.

Shelvesoutofbooks · 29/06/2019 12:19

Skincare is such a personal thing that someone might be okay with just soap and some could break out easily from soap! There is no right answer here

Heatherjayne1972 · 29/06/2019 12:19

I was told years ago that you should never use soap on your face
Apparently you only need water
I suppose a cleanser is needed to remove make up tho

Lovethetimeyouhave · 29/06/2019 12:29

Ok so I don't use soap, my gran told me from a young age not to use it on my face, one reason because of it causing spots.

Lush Coalface soap.

AndNoneForGretchenWieners · 29/06/2019 12:34

I use bar soap instead of face wash and shower gel. It lasts much longer and my skin hasn't been scaly or dry since starting to use it. I'm lucky to have some posh soap on the go at the moment (my nan bought me Chanel soap for Christmas) but I usually use Lux.

CistusRose · 29/06/2019 12:34

Face wash but I'm moving to bar soap so maybe Dove or something?

mrsjackrussell · 29/06/2019 12:35

I think it depends on what type of soap it is. I had rosacea with pustules and sulphur soap worked miracles on it.

It's gone now but I wouldn't use anything else and at £10 for 3 bars its so cheap.

YesQueen · 29/06/2019 12:48

It is really personal. A lot of people say "I just use soap and have great skin"
Awesome. But you could probably chuck chip fat on it and have good skin, it's not the soap that's doing it
My skin is acne prone, sensitive, flaky and oily and it takes a LOT to improve it. I have to cleanse, use BHA, use serums and oils and moisturiser and use chemical exfoliants. So it's not that I don't just want to wash and go, I can't unless I want a red/sore face full of horrendous acne

Redpostbox · 29/06/2019 12:52

What is an oil cleanse?
