Why is Angela Merkel shaking?

This is not a goady thread, I feel genuinely concerned. It must be awful trying to fulfil your role with all eyes on you & cameras & then your body decides to go into full shaking mode. In the second clip I've seen, she clasps her hands about her waist as if to try & 'hold' it. I have no idea but could it be a thyroid thing or something diabetes related? I'm just curious, any ideas?

AnnaMagnani i used to be like that when I was younger, I would pass out if I had to stand for long. I still don’t deal with heat at all well.
Maybe she felt as though she might faint ? Standing in that heat must be incredibly unpleasant.

AnnaMagnani · 27/06/2019 22:24

EarlGrey rest assured I have been to the Sistine Chapel and survived without screaming.

But thanks for mocking my serious medical issue Hmm

Cakemonger · 27/06/2019 22:25

I too felt concerned when I saw this. I hope it's not serious. I feel genuine respect and goodwill towards her.

BernardsarenotalwaysSaints · 27/06/2019 22:26

I don’t know either but I also hope that she’s ok. It must be awful shaking like that & knowing that so many people are watching you.

Jux · 27/06/2019 22:26

I do hope it's nothing serious, that it can be dealt with quickly and easily, and that next time we see her she'll be fine fettle.

choosechilli · 27/06/2019 22:27

'It was suggested to me it might be an alcoholic issue??'
Don't be ridiculous - she is an amazing, accomplished woman. How dare you.

Meyoumeanmeh · 27/06/2019 22:37

I really feel for her. Bad enough to have incidents such as that happening to you but then having the whole world watch- with the camera zooming in-must make it all so much more difficult.
I hope it is nothing serious.

Broken11Girl · 27/06/2019 22:37

Being amazing and accomplished doesn't preclude an alcohol problem.
Sympathy to Angela, don't agree with her politics at all but respect. Hope she's ok.

WorraLiberty · 27/06/2019 22:38

'It was suggested to me it might be an alcoholic issue??'
Don't be ridiculous - she is an amazing, accomplished woman. How dare you.

WTF? How insulting to all the amazing, accomplished people who have become alcoholics Confused

I doubt very much it's an alcohol issue but at the same time, your post was awful.

Jaffacakebeast · 27/06/2019 22:39

I’m no fan, but I feel really sorry for her, she looked a mix of upset/scared and embarrassed, must be awful to have to plod on in full view when you’re ill

RosaWaiting · 27/06/2019 22:41

Anna yes, the low blood pressure and heat thing is a nightmare and last summer my doc said something to me about the heat making it lower...!

I don't know how these people stand around in the heat either.

anyway, I hope she is okay.

Iwantdoesntget · 27/06/2019 22:42

I think she’s quite an amazing woman. Having all this in the public eye must be super hard. I’d guess it’s adrenal fatigue/ exhaustion. But I’m no Dr! Hope she’s ok.

Jsmith99 · 27/06/2019 22:46

I admire Angela Merkel enormously, and I hope that whatever is wrong with her isn’t too serious. We need leaders of her experience and judgement. I remember, not so long ago, seeing her and Barack Obama meeting at the White House and thinking we were in reasonably safe hands. How quickly things can change...

JazzersMaw · 27/06/2019 22:48

I didn’t know it had happened again. Could be hydration. It’s very hot in Germany just now. Like very very hot!

swimmerforlife · 27/06/2019 22:52

It could be variety of things, I mean it could be stress, she is an amazing strong leader but she has been chancellor for many years now?

Or just low blood sugar, if I get stressed / low blood sugar / tired I know I start shaking (admittedly not as violently as that, and I am younger, nor am I running a country!)

TanMateix · 27/06/2019 22:54

I suffer from low blood pressure when I was , you don’t have to be diabetic to suffer from that. I have not seen
AM’s episodes but shaking, having to sit and even fainting was relatively common for me when I was slimmer, slightly dehydrated and the temperatures were over 28.

fascinated · 27/06/2019 22:56

Don’t forget, one of her CDU/CSU colleagues was murdered at the start of June. It could well be stress.

northernlites · 27/06/2019 22:57

@choosechilli

'It was suggested to me it might be an alcoholic issue??'
Don't be ridiculous - she is an amazing, accomplished woman. How dare you.

If you would care to read again what was posted:
'It was suggested to me...'.

This is very different to me making a statement such as:
'I think she has alcoholic issues'

So your 'how dare you' was wholly unnecessary

She is accomplished
She is brave
She has a health issue
We don't know what it is
All suggestions are speculative

WorraLiberty · 27/06/2019 22:59

Actually a friend of mine used to shake quite violently when she was having anxiety/panic attacks.

She'd never suffered anything like that before and they just came on out of nowhere (Dr thought it may have been related to peri-menopause). The more she shook the more embarrassed it made her, which made her panic and shake more.

Poor thing gave up her public facing job in the end and switched to office work.

ChequersDog · 27/06/2019 23:04

She had a public episode of low blood pressure a few years ago. So it could be that she has ongoing issues with that.

MythicalBiologicalFennel · 27/06/2019 23:05

my doc said something to me about the heat making it lower...!

This is definitely the case for me and it is getting worse with age - maybe it's the same with Merkel? Now I know the signs and will have cold drinks, coke, or if I can a cold shower before things get too bad. The first few times it happened I spent hours lying down and feeling awful wondering what was wrong with me. Then my grandad brought out his blood pressure monitor and all was revealed...

Ladymargarethall · 27/06/2019 23:08

More Angie fans here. I agree that she will have the best medical care Germany has to offer, but it doesn't stop us being concerned.

dollydaydream114 · 27/06/2019 23:09

I've had the shakes like that, and cold sweats, when I haven't had enough fluids in hot weather, or once or twice when I've overdone it during a workout. I've got low blood pressure which is probably a factor. So it could easily be something like that.

Also - I have seen alcoholics get tremors from booze withdrawal and it looked nothing like that, so I strongly doubt she has any kind of drink problem and any suggestion that she does is probably just people being spiteful.

Ultimately, if it's simply a physical condition she's suffering from it is absolutely nobody's business.

LillithsFamiliar · 27/06/2019 23:11

I'd almost forgotten but Worra's post reminded me - when I was anxious and my infection markers were high, I used to shake so badly that my teeth would chatter. It happened a few times over the course of one month and then never happened again.

blue25 · 27/06/2019 23:11

I feel really uncomfortable with these videos of her being scrutinised. I just hope it's nothing serious and she gets better soon.
