Bit boring I know. But just that really ,how often do you bleach loo?.I do every night, and sometimes during day as well. Also use it for cleaning sinks and soaking items .My DS thinks my use is a bit excessive .and could be harming the enviroment .Any thoughts?

I use it for the toilets and that’s it. Use different products for other things

PuppyMonkey · 26/06/2019 14:06

Can't think of the last time I used actual bleach. We have to use Harpic for loos, as we live in hard water area. Don't use bleach to clean kitchen, bathroom or floors etc, use other stuff.

fussychica · 26/06/2019 14:07

Try to use products as little as possible, I'm definitely no Mrs HinchGrin
Bleach for loo only and very occasionally drain in kitchen sink.

I try not to use bleach at all. Toilets I use method toilet cleaner. Surfaces I use astonish cleaning spray with a micro fibre cloth.

The manufacturing process for bleach is bad news for the environment as well so I try not to support its use or production at all.

Sakura7 · 26/06/2019 14:17

It does seem a bit excessive. I bleach the loo about twice a week but clean with wipes/spray in between as necessary.

If you want to to use more natural stuff, vinegar is great for sinks and for the glass around the shower.

MyNameIsCharlesII · 26/06/2019 14:20

I only ever use bleach to clean round when someone’s got a sickness bug.

Hmmmbop · 26/06/2019 15:18

I don't use bleach and never have. It's awful for the environment, I'm surprised they still sell it for domestic use.

My house is very clean.

rachelfrost · 26/06/2019 15:22

Every night sounds crazy to me. I clean the loo once a week with bleach and twice a week with method cleaning spray (bleach free). Our house is clean and we don’t get sick. Why do you use so much bleach? As well as being bad for the environment it’s bad for your health.

BeerandBiscuits · 26/06/2019 15:34

I never use bleach in the toilets.
Had new toilets installed a few years ago and product info said they'd been coated with something to resist stains and limescale and that bleach would damage this.
So just use vinegar and bicarb and toilets stay shiny and clean.
The only thing I use bleach for is cleaning the bird feeders.

Screamanger · 26/06/2019 15:38

Our waste flows into a reed pond. Any use of bleach and chemicals will kill the bacteria so we avoid using it

fleshmarketclose · 26/06/2019 15:42

I use bleach in the loo when anyone has a tummy bug and occasionally when I feel the need but don't routinely use bleach tbh so one bottle lasts me months. I use Method toilet cleaner as well and sometimes the Wilko toilet cleaner because I like the fragrance.

KnittingForMittens · 26/06/2019 15:50

Never.

The only thing I use is harpic tablets once a month to keep limescale at bay. Otherwise, I just use Wilko vegan friendly toilet cleaner.

kerkyra · 26/06/2019 15:54

I use bleach to soak my sons cricket whites and
For the loos once a week

EmmaC78 · 26/06/2019 15:54

I don't use bleach at all. There have been loads of previous threads about this. It is MN favourite.

Brandaris · 26/06/2019 15:57

Bleach goes in the toilet the night before visitors arrive. Which isn’t very often.

That seems like a lot of bleach to use, I can’t believe it’s really necessary.

INeedNewShoes · 26/06/2019 16:01

I generally don't use bleach. I use an eco Astonish bathroom spray (which is great on limescale where other eco friendly products have failed!) for cleaning the bathroom.

Maybe once a month I'll feel the need to bleach the toilet. Or if one of us has a sickness bug I will use weak, very diluted bleach to clean the bathroom sink and floor as well as the loo.

I recently used bleach to thoroughly clean the kitchen bin (first time in 6 years) but that was very much a one off.

I'm probably down to using a bottle of bleach every 6-8 months but I'd like to wean myself off it altogether as I've become aware of just how bad for the environment it is.

NeverPutAWetFootInABirkenstock · 26/06/2019 16:04

Another bleach thread! I love a good household cleaning thread.

No bleach here, not for years. I use the toilet cleaner (and in fact the rest of the range) from Splosh, as they do refills so it minimises plastic use. I should probably be squeezing a lemon and flinging bicarb around the place, but haven't quite got to that point.

We're not particularly houseproud, but we're by no means minging, and we're a healthy bunch, can't remember the last time any of us had stomach bugs.

firstimemamma · 26/06/2019 16:24

I used to use it for toilet 3 times a week and down plug hole every time I cleaned a sink.

I now rarely use it (diarrhoea or vomiting - down toilet only) and have switched to refillable cleaning products to cut back on my plastic use.

My home still looks and feels just as clean as before. Bleach is unnecessary imo. Smile

AdoreTheBeach · 26/06/2019 16:54

Generally I use toilet duck or harpic in the toilet. If DH is doing his business at home (as opposed to at work), I use a lot more

I use bleach almost daily in the kitchen - cutting boards and sink/washing up bowl. A little in hot water. We cook a lot with tumeric, paprika etc and it tends to stain hence the little bleach in the water.

WhoAteMyNuts · 26/06/2019 17:04

I use toilet cleaner once a week and bleach the kitchen sink once a week. I have a disinfectant spray I use to clean the toilet and sink handles but again only use it once a week.

I really don't think it's necessary to bleach the toilet daily as it's hardly a surface you come into contact with all the time. I will disinfect the handles more frequently if one of us is ill but that rarely happens.

Deadringer · 26/06/2019 17:15

I only use bleach occasionally. I am trying to cut down on plastic waste and am fed up with having different sprays for cleaning, anti bac, bathroom cleaner, grease remover etc, so now I just put a little wash up liquid in a spray bottle with water and use it to clean everything. It's much cheaper too.

smashamasha · 26/06/2019 17:16

There's some very convincing new research which says household cleaners are causing a huge amount of illness. The fumes from them are worse than living by a main road.

Use eco friendly ones - not just for the environment but for yourselves and your children.

And for gods sake DO NOT USE ZOFLORA!!! It has formaldehyde in it.

Megan2018 · 26/06/2019 17:22

We don't buy any bleach as such.

Toilets we use a cheap toilet cleaner (whatever is on offer) which probably contains some bleach - that gets done weekly by the cleaner and then again if needed in between. As we work full time and have 3 toilets between 2 of us they don't see much action as we aren't home much.

Sinks etc we only use e-cloths and no products. We only have a special cleaning product for cleaning up pet urine/vomit (we have 3 cats) - for everything else just e-cloths and water.

What on earth do you soak in bleach?

schnubbins · 26/06/2019 17:25

No bleach here either. Its horrendous for the environment .I had friend who doused her whole place in it and it put me right off.For the kitchen I use washing up liquid only and microfibre cloths to shine. For bathroom vinegar cleaners and Jif when needed.I also have Windolene for mirrors and Harpic for the loos.No other cleaning fluids anymore.Saves a fortune and a lot of clutter.

Gazelda · 26/06/2019 17:28

I'm just using up the last of my bleach stash and will be switching to Method toilet cleaner instead.

I generally just use cleaner down the loo a couple of times a week (unless illness or grime necessitates more frequent use). I give bathroom a thorough clean every week with micro fibre cloths and Method spray.

I know that I don't clean as frequently as many, but it's clean enough that I wouldn't be ashamed for any visitors using my bathroom, and the family generally keep in good health.
