Bit boring I know. But just that really ,how often do you bleach loo?.I do every night, and sometimes during day as well. Also use it for cleaning sinks and soaking items .My DS thinks my use is a bit excessive .and could be harming the enviroment .Any thoughts?

teenmum The cats are probably pissing on your patio because you pour bleach on it. Cats are actually attracted to the smell of bleach and chlorine!

The bleach is probably not great for the skin on your kids' feet, however...

Happyspud · 26/06/2019 22:57

Don’t use it. Please stop using it OP.

Hmmmbop · 26/06/2019 22:59

Yes teenmum never use bleach to clean cat per, they like it. Use lemon juice, they don't like that!

We haven't used bleach for years. I use Method or Ecover products.

Sammy867 · 26/06/2019 23:03

We have bleachable carpets. If there’s a sickness bug or the dog or cat has an accident or there’s a stain I can’t get out (I’m thinking of the blue emulsion on the cream carpet incident) then I put bleach in my spot carpet cleaner to clean it. Otherwise I only use it in the toilets.

Disco3000 · 26/06/2019 23:04

I have never really thought about bleach being a bad thing? I am obsessed with bleach. I use for sinks and toilets and surfaces. Have started to use method products for everything and less bleach but it's still there. Love the smell.

Sofasurfingsally · 26/06/2019 23:05

I think bleach is bad for your breathing.

Surfingtheweb · 26/06/2019 23:18

Actual bleach, once per week on the kitchen sink after using cillit bang for limescale. I don't use bleach in the loo, I use toilet cleaner with limescale remover. Obviously I live in a hard water area 😂

Laurajjj · 26/06/2019 23:24

If you think bleach is bad to breath then I suppose you don't use swimming pools? You ingest and breath in far more chlorine that you ever will when using bleach to clean.

As for toilet germs, yep they've got to be killed in my opinion. That's not up for negotiation for me. Toilets by their nature are so dirty and it's like a cocktail for all the harmful nasty germs too. They get spread everywhere over the bathroom when the toilet is flushed.

ElizaPancakes · 26/06/2019 23:31

I use bleach in the toilet, maybe every couple of days, and round the grout in the bathroom when it gets a bit gross.

gamerchick · 27/06/2019 00:16

Have you tried shutting the lid before you flush? It's kinda what it's for...

swissmilk · 27/06/2019 00:35

You are endangering your health and those that live with you.
You are also damaging my environment, completely without benefit to anyone apart from bleach manufacturers so thanks for that!

PawPawNoodle · 27/06/2019 01:44

I have a spray bottle of bleach and I only use it in the kitchen sink, because its disgusting white plastic and absorbs any little stain.

Hmmmbop · 27/06/2019 02:59

They get spread everywhere over the bathroom when the toilet is flushed.

Not if you close the lid! Not closing the lid is disgusting.

smashamasha · 27/06/2019 05:53

@Laurajjj

Just so you know - both Method and Ecover kill 99% of germs. Same as any other cleaner.

They also clean - which bleach doesn't do.

Your analogy to swimming is a bit weak. You might go swimming once a week for an hour. If you're regularly cleaning your home with non eco cleaning substances, they continue to release toxic fumes for hours/days after using them. You are literally living in a permanently toxic environment.

There was a really good article in the Times recently about research by the Royal College of Physicians which states:

Traffic light” health warnings will be needed on deodorants, cleaning products and air fresheners as evidence mounts that indoor air pollution contributes to serious illness, scientists say.

Doctors are reviewing the dangers of chemicals released by common household products amid concern that these pollutants will be “the next diesel engine NOx scandal”.

Mainlandeurope · 27/06/2019 07:34

Even if you don't care about the environment why don't you care about your health? Baffled by people going on about toxic loos, you don't eat in there do you? Making sure you wash your hands thoroughly is far more important, good soap bar will do - no chemicals or plastic involved.

RuggyPeg · 27/06/2019 07:51

Wtf are you doing to necessitate cleaning the loo twice a day??? The mind boggles. You need to drink more water, sort your diet out and improve your aim if it's that bad.

This thread is just mind bending.

As for the actual loo seat, it's only your bum skin that touches it. You're not wiping your actual bumhole on it......or are you????

Your phone has way more bugs on it than your loo, for those of you who are permanently poised outside the bathroom door on your chemical warfare mission.

SmiledWithTheRisingSun · 27/06/2019 07:58

DONT USE WIPES!! 🙄🙄🙄

Laurajjj · 27/06/2019 08:12

Yes, I do put the toilet lid down when I flush, however the same cannot be said always for my ds bless him and visitors.

I've read the bottles of the ecover and method toilet cleaners and neither mention anything about germ kill. Please prove me otherwise though?

Of course you are coming into contact more with chlorine when swimming than cleaning the toilet. Your skin is literally covered in the chlorine and you are ingesting it in whilst swimming.

MyNameIsCharlesII · 27/06/2019 08:56

As for the actual loo seat, it's only your bum skin that touches it. You're not wiping your actual bumhole on it......or are you????

@RuggyPeg as a cleaner I am sad to say that I think yes some people do wipe their bumhole on the loo seat. Among other disgusting things. But I still manage to clean quite successfully without bleach.

smashamasha · 27/06/2019 09:02

@Laurajjj

VOCs in your home from cleaners are far more dangerous than swimming once a week.

You can claim they're not, but they are.

Chlorine is also not great for you but it doesn't stop cleaning products being bad for you either!

You can deny it all you like but non eco friendly cleaners are not good for the wider environment or those who live in the house.

Method and ecover cleaning products kill 99% of germs - the toilet cleaner might not but then who touches the inside of the loo anyway! The loo has considerably less germs than the floor, surfaces and even your own toothbrush (get some bleach on that!)

CrotchetyQuaver · 27/06/2019 09:06

We rarely use bleach, and are a very healthy family. I know another family who are always ill, and they clean with bleach several times a day to the point of obsession. I think there's a connection between their incredibly clean home and their frequent sickness and diahorrea. We need a few germs about to be healthy.

I use harpic limescale remover once a week down the loo to stop the brown stuff developing below the water line.

Laurajjj · 27/06/2019 09:41

The toilet is the only place I use bleach. Its down the loo for no more than 5 minutes before its flushed. Window is open in the bathroom at the time (bathroom window is always open in mine). All i'm saying is that a bit of bleach down the loo is infinitely less harmful for you than swimming in chlorine, or walking down alongside a busy road even breathing all the diesel fumes.

There are different parameters of germs. The germs in the toilet are infinitely worse and nastier than the ones elsewhere in the home.

Laurajjj · 27/06/2019 09:48

People really need to get their heads round that bleach is sodium hypochlorite, which is essentially salt. Your harpics, toilet ducks, air freshners, degreasers are the cocktail of nasty chemicals.

smashamasha · 27/06/2019 09:57

@Laurajjj

Thanks for that I'll stick some in tonight's dinner thenHmm

Look, a bit of bleach down the loo every now and then is ok if you really feel the nees.

I wouldn't personally as I feel a responsibility to the planet and have a child with asthma.

Bleach is not 'just salt' it's a highly corrosive carcinogen which causes lung irritation.

Use it if you want to - just don't pretend it's something it not. And don't pretend it's not doing any harm. It is.
