What is the name of my DS nursery friend?

DS is 2 nearly 3. His speach is (usually) very articulate. He has never really had "baby talk"

He has been talking about his new friend at nursery. He loves playing with her. He wants her to come for tea. That's great. Except he says her name is Pancake. Which obviously cannot be the case. So what is her name??

We had similar for months with my toddler. I had no idea who she was talking about until I arrived at the same time and she got all excited as the kid arrived. She still calls her friend the wrong name 2 years later. I haven’t said what it is as it’s identifiable but I was baffled for months.

My dd would tell me every day about this girl in the class who was called Covers. At least that's what it sounded like to me. I'm not English you see, and understanding what 5 yo is saying is a challenge in itself at times. It was only at the end of year that I finally saw it being written down. It's Corvus. Makes sense now Grin

Just for context we're live in Lancs so if you're saying Covers/Corvus out loud do so with best Freddie Flintoff accent you can manage.

A girl called Feather (which I thought unusual but lovely) was actually called Heather (also lovely though not so unusual)

@SirVixofVixHall I didn't know that about Morgan sounding differently in Wales. What would it rhyme with?

SirVixofVixHall · 26/06/2019 16:36

Well the “or” sound is like the or in orange, rather than like the or in order.

SirVixofVixHall · 26/06/2019 16:37

Oh and the gan is gan to rhyme with can rather than more like gun.

SirVixofVixHall · 26/06/2019 16:40

A girl called Corvus ? As in Corvus Corone , the carrion crow ? Am now imagining goth parents.

SirVixofVixHall · 26/06/2019 16:41

I forgot, you also sound the r in welsh.

I am sorry I opened this thread at work as I suspect my office neighbour will be in to see about the snorting soon.

My DD is in a class with a Wednesday, confusing when it comes to writing out party invitations.

When does this party finish?
Well, it says To Wednesday...

The stats geek in me just had to download the top 1000 England and Wales data (this takes you down to girls who shared their name with about 35 others) and it won't surprise you to learn that Pancake isn't in the top 1000 for 2016.

drspouse · 26/06/2019 17:02

Incidentally this tool

names.darkgreener.com/
has no children named Pancake but it doesn't register names with less than 3 I think.
But there are both Panaiyota (girl, 3 or 4 some years) and Panka (3 in 2014 but less than 3 other years) so it's possible it's a nickname.

Soola · 26/06/2019 17:35

No Soola’s! Shock

Fishfingerface1 · 26/06/2019 17:40

I heard an older child shout to a younger one as they got off the bus out side my house " oi Bismarck wait for me" it couldn't be .. could it ?

JaimeBronde · 26/06/2019 17:41

Thanks SirVix

purplebunny2012 · 26/06/2019 17:42

I see you have solved the mystery. I was thinking it could easily actually be Pancake (poor kid).
I thought my son's school friend was called Retchie. I was thinking that wasn't particularly nice. Then found out it was Reggie! Son wasn't great at pronunciation.
Ah well, at least Pancake isn't horrid sounding, just bloody weird for a human

RedCrab · 26/06/2019 17:42

That graph is really interesting. My DD1 shares her name with only 8 other girls and DD2 shares her name with only 21 other girls (2017 - fat thumbs on phone couldn’t get it to show 2018).

Villageidiots · 26/06/2019 17:54

Reminds me of when DH's mate had a baby and when I asked DH the name, he confidently told me 'Doodger'. Turned out (fortunately) that her name was actually Georgia, but she'll always be Doodger to me!!

NorthbyNorthwest22 · 26/06/2019 17:56

Poor little Keith is probably named after a much loved grandad.
I have a friend whos son is named Alec after her grandad although her older children have given him the nickname little Al which i love!

Hahaha26 · 26/06/2019 17:58

Many moons ago when I was in nursery my best friend insisted her names were Lyndsey And August, And being middle name, dm didn’t believe me, asked bf, she confirmed And.

It was actually Anne Grin

2tired2bewitty · 26/06/2019 18:02

My dad is called Keith, but his Mum used to call him Kiwi, so perhaps baby Kiwi is really Keith?

alltheteainchinajustisntenough · 26/06/2019 18:04

SirVixofVixHall

Morgan doesn’t rhyme with organ? It does in the part of Wales I’m from!! Confused

purplebunny2012 · 26/06/2019 18:05

I have a friend called Keith. He absolutely hates his name

Zacharysmummy12 · 26/06/2019 18:11

Not long back from Egypt where my 5 year old ds made friends with a boy called lemon sauce. I'm sure it was not his real name but ds insisted and the boy was German so couldn't understand when I asked him his real name. Grin
