Has Tom Hanks ever made a bad film?

This is an ongoing discussion that DH and I have. We genuinely dint think he has! Watching him on Graham Norton just now, and I heard his interviews with Chris Evans
this week, and he seems like such a nice guy. (Please don’t tell me he bites the heads off jellybabies or anything).

OP posts:

Worryingly I cant think of a single Mel Gibson film I havnt enjoyed on some level, despite him being what he is.

EleanorLavish · 22/06/2019 00:07

What am I reading?? Big is amazing!

Smidge001 · 22/06/2019 00:08

I'm with you OP, i don't think he's made a bad film. I can't remember having seen castaway tbf, (it's possible I'd find that boring if it's just him and a ball for the entire film) but I remember loving big/Turner and hooch/splash when I was younger, and loved catch me if you can, forrest gump, Philadelphia, the green mile, sully,..... Basically all his films Grin.

Frazzled2207 · 22/06/2019 00:11

Not what you asked but captain Phillips is one of his best

GrapefruitIsGross · 22/06/2019 00:16

I can’t believe there’s people on this planet who think You’ve Got Mail is a shit film!

I mean it’s not exactly Citizen Kane but it’s inoffensive fluff (and Meg Ryan has lovely hair in it)

DickZillaofTheVilla · 22/06/2019 00:29

Joe vs the Volcano. I was only thinking about that film the other day for some reason too I haven’t seen it in donkeys

Calloway · 22/06/2019 00:35

You've Got Mail is really leaden example of that 90s rom com genre. Plus his character is a bit of a dick.

SpeckofStardust · 22/06/2019 00:49

So many:
Big, Forrest Gump, Joe v the Volcano, You’ve Got Mail, the Dan Brown debacle, Castaway, Catch me

The only two of his movies I’ve really liked were in spite of him rather than because of him:
Road to Perdition
The Green Mile

HollowTalk · 22/06/2019 01:12

@Calloway that was Springsteen, not Neil Young, wasn't it?

WanderingTrolley1 · 22/06/2019 01:16

Love Castaway and Big! The only TH film I didn’t like (and indeed fell asleep through) was Apollo 13.

TwinklyMummaLuvsHerBubba89 · 22/06/2019 01:16

Big. Seriously creepy. Basically it clearly shows an adult woman being intimate with a boy, it's an awful film!!

I loved this film as a child, I watched it umpteen times.

I watched it a few years ago for the first time since childhood. Eeeeeewwwwwww. Totally creepy and weird.

I was gutted.

Calloway · 22/06/2019 01:17

Springsteen had a song in the film too but the song playing during Andy's memorial at the end of the film is Neil Young.

TwinklyMummaLuvsHerBubba89 · 22/06/2019 01:20

I loved him in Splash, Turner and Hooch, You've Got Mail. Ah he was a fab so-so actor in the 89's/90's

I really like his son (Colin) he was great in the final series of Dexter and I love him in Life In Pieces on Amazon.

Calloway · 22/06/2019 01:28

No one has mentioned Sleepless in Seattle. I'm not crazy about it myself but it must be one of his biggest hits.

CoolCarrie · 22/06/2019 01:33

Rita Wilson who is married to Tom Hanks was one of the producers of My Big Fat Greek Wedding

RumerGodden · 22/06/2019 01:34

Has he made a good one? Plenty of decent films spoiled by his rubber face. A few decent ones. Still doesn't excuse himself for the public outing of his drama teacher at the Oscars to earn himself a bit of hollywood gay cred. Disgusting man!

CaptainJaneway62 · 22/06/2019 01:44

He has been my favourite actor for many years and I have most of his films on DVD.
The only 2 films I am not keen on

The Circle and Cloud Atlas
Absolutely loved him in and have watched countless times... Philadelphia, Big, The Green Mile, Sleepless in Seatle, Bridge of Spies, Road to Perdition, Sully, Catch Me If You Can

HarryHenderson · 22/06/2019 01:50

I LOVE the burbs!!

HarryHenderson · 22/06/2019 01:55

@RumerGodden Disgusting man? Bit harsh.

Apparently his teacher was very happy with the speech Tom Hanks gave. Don't know why you're all offended on his behalf Hmm

EmmaGrundyForPM · 22/06/2019 02:21

Forrest Gump is a dreadful film.

I've not seen the Da Vinci Code ones but suspect I wouldn't like them.

I really liked Catch Me if You Can

RumerGodden · 22/06/2019 02:21

@HarryHenderson, he's lucky his teacher was OK with it. Imagine someone famous disclosing your sexual preference or something else personal which could be used to discriminate against you. We're talking america 25 years ago so not the accepting climate of today. The fact that he "outed" him means there was probably a good reason he was't open about it in the first place.

OkPedro · 22/06/2019 02:30

The green mile is “shit”? fuck 😳

RiversDisguise · 22/06/2019 03:16

I don't like any of his films that I've seen, lol. His voice grates.

RiversDisguise · 22/06/2019 03:17

Apollo 13 is especially dire apart from a scene or two with Ed Harris.

Soola · 22/06/2019 05:31

I like Big! Still an enjoyable film. The Ladykillers remake was sure and Hanks especially so.
