Renewing a passport in secret

starburst1979 · 12/06/2019 19:39

Thought I'd nailed Christmas this year by booking a surprise year trip for DH and the boys to Barcelona

The boys both need passports renewed but I can sort that without arousing suspicion. However, I've just checked mine and DH passport and they expire in March so wont be valid for travel due to Brexit.

Can I apply for a passport for him without him knowing or am I going to have to extend the web of lies to come up with a reason for him to renew his passport even though (to his knowledge) we arent going anywhere for at least 3 years!

Well the biggest hurdle will be the photograph taking ...

Bunnyhop1502 · 12/06/2019 19:42

I think it’s perfectly reasonable to want to sort it out before Brexit happens. Go with that!

GeorgieTheGorgeousGoat · 12/06/2019 19:42

Maybe say because of Brexit you can get Red passports before we leave?

starburst1979 · 12/06/2019 19:42

He looks the same as he did 10yrs ago..could we not use the same photo or does it have to be a new one?

Sorted before Brexit is a good idea, but DP could have applied for my passport; we used a photo he took on his phone. It was really easy.

starburst1979 · 12/06/2019 19:44

I was thinking of saying that getting passports after Brexit will be massively more expensive so I want it sorted now...web of lies and deception..

Just tell him it's far easier to renew an existing passport than to let it expire & get a new one.

starburst1979 · 12/06/2019 19:45

@AnchorDownDeepBreath I was thinking I'd just take a sneaky photo Smile

Just tried it with ds who is 14 and its accepted the photo.

Passport photo requirements have changed so his photo taken 10 years ago may not be acceptable.

Does your husband go away ever with mates or anyone else? Could ask them to "plan" a trip with him then pull out before booking for some other reason.

maloofhoof · 12/06/2019 19:46

I'd say you want to stagger the cost by doing one each year

dementedpixie · 12/06/2019 19:47

Everyone needs a new photo. The photo can be uploaded online.

starburst1979 · 12/06/2019 19:48

Hahah @ColaFreezePop that's a great idea! Unfortunately he is a complete home bird who would rather be in the fields with the dogs or somewhere with his family. I'm just going to brazen it out and tell him he need to renew before Brexit (that way he can pay for his own Grin )

Just pretend you’re taking a photo of him with the kids and crop them out

Spam88 · 12/06/2019 19:49

Do you not have to sign a declaration any more?

dementedpixie · 12/06/2019 19:49

Except remember he isn't allowed to smile.

WeeM · 12/06/2019 19:49

Does it not require a signature too? Or do you not need to do that for a renewal-I can’t rememeber?

GeorgieTheGorgeousGoat · 12/06/2019 19:50

The photo has to have been taken in the last month, you might think he looks exactly the same but that’s because you know him well. Strangers would be able to see differences. Be the time it expires the difference will be 20 years!

dementedpixie · 12/06/2019 19:50

No it's all done online including the photo and then you send the old passport back

dementedpixie · 12/06/2019 19:51

And you sign the new passport when it gets sent to you

GeorgieTheGorgeousGoat · 12/06/2019 19:51

You sign the passport when it arrives. Applications are done online. Remember to put his details for contact and updates.

GeorgieTheGorgeousGoat · 12/06/2019 19:52

NOT to put his details that should have been!!!

WeeM · 12/06/2019 19:52

It might be quite tricky to take a head shot, not smiling against a plain background with no shadows without him knowing Grin...I think extending the web of lies is your best shot

starburst1979 · 12/06/2019 19:55

I've just messaged him to say we need to renew before October as they could DOUBLE in price and we both need them for work....hopefully he will just tell me to sort it out and I'm home free. Bloody Brexit!!

Did get a shock when I realised that ds 17 would get am adult one but I've told him it's for ID when hes 18 Smile

Ha I wouldn’t worry, by the time the government get their finger out your husband will have had 4 new passports!
