What is your secret that you waste money on?

We must all have one thing that we secretly treat ourselves too... or waste money on.... for many women it seems to be shoes or a nice handbag etc.
Me? I waste my money on flight upgrades

What about you?

OP posts:

Chanel nail varnish

EnidButton · 12/06/2019 21:20

That's not a waste though Charlie

NewAndImprovedNorks · 12/06/2019 21:21

Art...sooo much lovely art from lovely artists. Makes me happy every single day
Candles and flowers
Indoor plants and pots to put them in...it is getting beyond a joke. Morrison’s can see me coming and put out the really HUGE plants ready for me
Vintage children’s illustrated books. This is getting beyond a joke now, but charity shops benefit, so I am claiming it is just giving money to charity....and getting a book as a ‘thank you’

EnidButton · 12/06/2019 21:22

Although I don't think any of these things are a waste really. Even my own. If stuff makes you feel nice and brings a bit of joy then why not.

Unless you're not paying for essentials to cover it obviously.

Anywherebuthere · 12/06/2019 21:23

Junk food, music and jeans when I was younger!

However the junk food means nice jeans don't fit now!

And I don't feel the need/want or means to randomly spend now that I have a family. I have budgets that I have to try to stick to.

NewAndImprovedNorks · 12/06/2019 21:23

Charlie....I sort of love you. Buying windows is FAB.
I have always asserted that the BEST fun you can have with money, is when you give it away

StrumpersPlunkett · 12/06/2019 21:23

I agree that stuff that makes you feel good/happy/healthy should never be seen as a waste.

Murinae · 12/06/2019 21:23

Pokémon Go and my chickens. I’ve just bought an automatic door for them so I don’t have to get up at dawn anymore to let them out!

SospanFrangipan · 12/06/2019 21:23

Lunch trips out to different places with DS the days I don't work....I need to put a stop to it!

Skyejuly · 12/06/2019 21:25

I thought my buying a 1.50 drink each day was bad. That's about as far as my budget goes!

Bananalanacake · 12/06/2019 21:27

chocolate. am also into kids clothes but mostly second hand so it's not too expensive.

user1486131602 · 12/06/2019 21:33

My kids!🤣

Summergarden · 12/06/2019 21:33

@Youmadorwhat wow, your bathroom is gorgeous. You’ve inspired me to put wallpaper in our bathroom too!

Well I was going to post that chocolate and other naughty snacks are the main things I fritter money on, but after reading the other replies it seems I have a fair few others too, oops.

Home magazines
Clothes for the kids
Expensive original artwork
Nail polishes

bordellosboheme · 12/06/2019 21:36

Work lunches rather than bringing my own... Quick food shops that I don't strictly need.... Posh food.

JesusInTheCabbageVan · 12/06/2019 21:38

@BertieBotts Exactly, which proves my point.

I wonder if everyone's just missed the blatant sexist generalisation in the OP.

NotAgainKen · 12/06/2019 21:40

Tony Chocolonely chocolate. I tell myself that £3.50 on chocolate isn't so bad next to DH's expensive wine habit, and it's better to have good chocolate less often, etc, etc.

I've also spent a small fortune on dog toys that are inevitably shredded within hours. I feel so cross with myself that I usually make a donation to a rescue shelter to balance out the waste.

I have to say I agree with JesusintheCabbageVan - "shoes and handbags", really? Isn't that the kind of thing male hacks might write when trying to shake down some material for a feature...?

DrDreReturns · 12/06/2019 21:42

My only expensive habit is Whiskey. Apart from that I live very frugally.

christinarossetti19 · 12/06/2019 21:42

I have never done this, but this thread has given me some good ideas of where to start.

Pinotjo · 12/06/2019 21:45

Concrete/stone animal statues for my garden, I have them peeping out between plants/bushes. Looks like Noah's ark of stone animals, everyone hates them but I dont care! Got my eye on a blue metal peacock from Dunelm £18, bargain!

Isitrainingihadntnoticed · 12/06/2019 21:45

Good vodka.
Chocolate
Ben and Jerry's
Supplements, protein shakes and energy drinks.

JoshLymanIsHotterThanSam · 12/06/2019 21:47

Acrylic nails and coffee shop coffee

Whosorrynow · 12/06/2019 21:48

Nothing I am pathologically frugal I cannot bring myself to waste money 😳

StrumpersPlunkett · 12/06/2019 21:51

@Pinotjo did you used to live in our house?

When we moved in 17 years ago there were nearly 50 hiding around we found them but by bit when pruning or planting up new bits of the garden 😁

DontDribbleOnTheCarpet · 12/06/2019 22:00

Fabric- at the moment it's cotton lycra jersey, in lovely prints. I use it to make knickers mostly, because I get maximum sewing joy with minimum wardrobe clutter and because making a nice gusset is a joyful thing! I also love the feeling of wearing undies which have been tailored to fit me exactly. It's a tiny bit of posh in my otherwise economy life.
I buy at least a bolt of fabric a month, but I do get very good deals.

My luxury is a taxi from (and to) the resort at the holiday end of the journey.

I go to Turkey alone - I find the cheapest flight and pay £5 ish per night bed and breakfast but the sheer luxury of walking out of the airport to find a board with my name on with an immediate comfort ride direct to my hotel is just so worth it.

AND at the end of the holiday, to have a car, pick me up and take me at my own choice of time to the airport, without having to go round 10 more hotels - pure luxury and worth every penny.
