HELP! How to stop crows attacking my car?

Inbedbynine · 07/06/2019 19:06

I have a black car that Iv had 3/4 months and it is parked on my drive way. For the last month 2 crows keep attacking a specific area on the car. They start this as soon as it’s light. They are very angry with the car not just pecking at it and are really scratching it. There is no road kill underneath, they’ve done it when it’s really clean (thinking possibly a reflection thing) and also when it’s dirty. They’ve done it when it’s sunny as well as when it’s been damp and dull.

Went to the garage and they weren’t interested. I. Can’t cover the whole car as they would still get under it to do it as it’s right at the bottom of the car. I can’t park my car anywhere else.

Any crow experts? Anything that can deter them?? Iv been banging on the widow each time I see them do it and they do fly off but of course come back every day. They like pecking on my front lawn so obviously have a food source there too!

Oh god I had no idea crows got up to car attacking antics so who knows about their colour preferences. Could you leave something silver out and see how they react...?

Inbedbynine · 08/06/2019 20:31

What’s also pissing me off is next door have two black cars parked 2 metres from mine and doesn’t touch theirs!

@Inbedbynine there must be something intrinsic about your car - is it just that it's parked near their 'patch' and they're venting their wrath?

Unlucky though, I'll give you that! I'm looking at crows in a new light now!

Inbedbynine · 08/06/2019 20:43

Iv lived here 4 years and we’ve lived in harmony until now!

Chuck a towel over it, covered in snakes and a few cd’s, see if it makes a difference 😂

MrsGrindah · 08/06/2019 20:48

Just cover the car!

GummyGoddess · 08/06/2019 21:48

What sort of damage are they causing? Do you have a picture?

TinselAndKnickers · 09/06/2019 01:53

Just found this thread and having to stifle my laughter Grin I would be so annoyed if this were me! Also RE bird spunk, I forgot that birds have sex Blush

Inbedbynine · 09/06/2019 06:08

tinsel breed. They breed. I can cope with that but not spunk!!!!!

It’s scratched up down to the white base layer. That’s are also pulling s part away from the edge by the wheel trim. I have a cover coming today.... I’ll look like a right wanker covering up the car! I thought only people with classic cars covered them. I whip it off and underneath my bog standard motor Grin

@Inbedbynine I googled it and apparently crows attacking cars is a 'thing'. Who knew?!

Also read that letting cars get dirty deters them but you've said they do it when it's clean and when it's dirty.

Tricky one isn't it, you can hardly dial 999 about the 'vandals'!!

Inbedbynine · 09/06/2019 07:44

Yes I knew it was a ‘thing’ but why the hell just randomly start! And why my car when next door have TWO black cars parked 2 metres from mine!

This is actually funny, a couple of months ago I pulled into the close and saw a crow attacking a neighbours door. They were pecking madly banging away at it like they wanted to get in! I just thought ‘crazy crow’, Little did I know I would be it’s next victim!

@Inbedby9 we all feel for you (honest!) but can't stop laughing at the same time. You must have the hardest crows on the block.

Instead of advising: 'call the police!' it's like: 'call the ornithologist!'

In the utter absence and void of anything constructive or useful to say err...keep us posted...? And may the force be with you!

Inbedbynine · 09/06/2019 08:09

Ha no I do appreciate it’s quite amusing. If it wasn’t damaging the car I wouldn’t be bothered but I don’t have a lot of money and my car is my only half decent belonging and it needs to last me!

Snog · 09/06/2019 08:20

Why not feed the crows to get in their good books

Bluebluered · 09/06/2019 08:29

Omg this thread is a revelation.

I didn’t know birds had sex Blush. Do they really? How does it happen?

Mouldiwarp1 · 09/06/2019 08:30

We had this a few years back. Just one crow. Cheeky bugger would peck at mirrors, rubber seals, etc. If I banged the window it would hop off and saunter (with a real swagger) down the road to start on next door’s car ... and so on. I think he terrorised the whole street. Lasted about three weeks and stopped suddenly. Someone (our neighbour?) shot him.

Inbedbynine · 09/06/2019 08:31

snog nooooo because they will tell all their ruffian friends and I’ll have a whole flock of them!!

blue I’d say google it but not sure what you will find Grin

I love animals but someone told me to get an air rifle! Not sure I could do that... everyone would see me do it and then I’d have to deal with the body and all his mates will come for me!

Just to say you're not alone. We have the same problem. It happened last season too. We have tried everything. Scarecrows, fake birds, foil windmills, leaving the sprinkler on the car, we also have a dog which doesn't deter them. They have destroyed the car. Scratches everywhere. Eaten/pecked any rubber including the window wipers. Our car is also black and shiny. Only a car cover works. They also eat all the smaller birds in our garden. We live in a remote area which probably doesn't help.

Inbedbynine · 09/06/2019 08:45

We live in a town but area is quite rural. Haven’t seen them eat any other birds but they certainly boss the little ones about.

This means car off and on through out the day though Sad Angry it’s not mating season or anything is it?! Trying to hope it’s a season thing and they will stop. Would a week with a cover on be enough to break the habit?

LesserBohemian · 09/06/2019 08:46

The gardens around here all back onto one another and one neighbour noticed a new hole in his back garden fence so went round to the other side’s house to ask if he knew what had happened and he casually said he’d taken a pop at a jackdaw with an air rifle! Shock

The chimneys were full of cawing jackdaws, which was mildly annoying at times of the year but fuck me, he could have killed us all with one shot as it pinged through all the fences!

I rarely see/hear them now though. I think once you scare them off with something, you’ll have broken the habit and they’ll go and fixate on something else. You might end up passing the fake snake around the close!

Inbedbynine · 09/06/2019 08:50

They never ever go in the back garden. Ever. Just the front. I know it’s the same 2 crows. Don’t ask me how but I do! There’s loads of better places they could go! Nice trees and stuff across the next road.

Ha can picture what ever the thing is that comes out the rifle pinging around like in a cartoon Grin

@bluebluered how did you think that fledglings came about Grin? Avoid riverbanks in the spring - drakes are rapey bastards and bird sex is exactly what you are thinking it is...

OP, I hope they don't work out how to pull your cover off. Corvid are incredibly intelligent - they even have the ability to make tools... And please don't get an air rifle - changes to Natural England's licensing means shooting a crow is now an offence. Still, at least your car doesn't have eyes that can be pecked out Grin And the crows are leaving you alone. For now Grin

Ever seen "The Birds" GrinGrinGrin?!

Bluebluered · 09/06/2019 12:27

God. So male birds have a penis? 😱. All I’ve ever known is that males fertilise the eggs. I thought they sat on them or something Blush. So chickens have sex to make eggs? I feel like I need to google this, but I’m afraid of opening weird things. I can’t believe I never knew this Confused.

DobbyTheHouseElk · 09/06/2019 12:44

Chickens have sex, that fertilises the egg. The egg is there anyway like a human period. Hens lay daily.

Weird how people don’t know this.
