What time do your kids go to bed?

Now that my children are getting older they are starting to notice some of their friends go to bed much later than them. My 9 year old is in bed reading by 8 and it’s lights of at 8:30, is that too early, can I let him stay up later? My other kids go to bed:
7 year old reading at 7:30 lights out at 8
4 year old reading at 6:45 lights out at 7

My 6.8 year old goes to bed at 7.30, reads until 7.45 then lights out. Usually asleep within minutes. Previous bedtime was 7pm from baby age up to 6 and a bit years.

Stravapalava · 06/06/2019 22:11

It's so dependent on the individual child and their needs.

My 4 year old goes up at 7, by the time we've done getting changed, teeth, stories etc it's about 7.30 / 7.45. She tends to go straight to sleep.

My 8 year old goes up about 8 / 8.30 and might read for a little bit or just go straight to sleep. I don't have a strict "lights out" time as she's pretty good at turning the light out herself at a reasonable time.

SellFridges · 06/06/2019 22:18

Totally depends on your family’s schedule. We don’t get home from work/school/nursery until at least 5:30. Which means dinner at 6 ish, so no chance of bed by 6:45 if we want to spend time together.

Ours are fairly late risers, so also fairly late to bed - 4 year old is generally asleep by 8, 8 year old by 9:30.

DS is 15 and lights out is 9.30 Blush

In mitigation he has always needed a lot of sleep and we are all early to bed, early to rise types. The actual falling asleep is markedly later than it used to be, now it's more to do with being ready for bed and off the computer and guitar at a decent time. If he requested a later bedtime o wouldn't stop him, it's just never happened yet Grin

kaytee87 · 06/06/2019 22:25

They're going to sleep at the right time if they get up easily (or wake happily) at the time they need to be up for school etc.

kaytee87 · 06/06/2019 22:26

Should have said, almost 3yo is 7/7.30

LilyRose16 · 06/06/2019 22:43

My 3 year old is in nursery full time, she goes to bed at 8.30 but is usually awake until around 9. A couple of days a week we really struggle to get her to sleep before 9.30. She is just wired all of the time, never gets tired or groggy. Soon as she wakes between 6-7 she is wide awake and full of beans. Some kids just need less sleep than others. I know she is awake a lot later than other kids her age but we have a lovely time in the evenings after long days at nursery/working. And it works for us.

MamaRaisingBoys · 06/06/2019 22:59

21mo generally asleep for 7:30
3.5yo generally asleep for 8

Tigresswoods · 06/06/2019 23:06

9 almost 9.5y old goes up at some point between 8:30 & 9pm. He reads. We've no idea when the light goes off but it's never on when we go up around 10:30.

We got much more relaxed about 12-18m ago. He's always up at some point between 6:30am & 7:30am depending on how much physical activity he's done the day before.

elQuintoConyo · 06/06/2019 23:17

7.5yo in bed by 9/9.15, reads until 9.30 ish. Up at 8.15am, we're three minutes walk from school.

RomaineCalm · 06/06/2019 23:31

It also depends on what time they need to up in the morning.

DC is 11yrs and goes to bed around 8:30pm and reads until 9:00pm. He needs to be up at 7:00am and needs sleep. 9-10 hours seems to be about right. Sometimes he'll have an early night and will be sparko by 8:00pm.

My feeling is that good sleep is so important - both physically and mentally, I would be ignoring what other children do and making sure that my DC had plenty of sleep.

CakeNinja · 07/06/2019 00:03

Dds 13 and 14 go to bed/sleep between 10 and 11. Up at 7:15.
Ds is 7 and goes up for a story at around 8:30, reads to himself for a bit and then generally bed for 9. Up at 7:45.
When the dds were 7 they were both in bed for about 7:30 but now they’re older everything happens a bit later and so ds has a later bedtime than his sisters did at the same age because we eat later etc.
Works for us.
At the weekends, the teens surface between 10-11 unless we are out doing stuff, and ds around 8:30/9.

Fedoratheexploreer · 07/06/2019 00:06

My boys aged 1 and almost 4 go to bed at 7.30

Fantail · 07/06/2019 08:39

My 8 year old is asleep by 8. Sure she can stay up later but I don’t like to wake her in the morning. She wakes naturally between 6.30 & 7.

Some children need more sleep and some less, just like adults.

Damntheman · 07/06/2019 09:25

My 2.5 year old goes to bed at 18.00, my almost 6 year old goes at 18.30 during the week days (has an early start for school and needs a TON of sleep), on the weekend nights (friday, saturday nights) he goes at 19.30 and can read until 20.00. Then he tends to sleep until 9am the next day.

Pinkvoid · 07/06/2019 09:28

My DC are 9, 8 and almost 7. I’ve always found it easiest to have a blanket bedtime for all to avoid arguments. They go to bed at 8 and lights are out for 8:30. This works well for us.

CassianAndor · 07/06/2019 09:28

9 year old, lights out between 9 and 9.30. We wake her at 7.

she's always been a night owl.

Crustaceans · 07/06/2019 09:31

My 9 year old goes to bed at 9, theoretically. Unless he’s got training til 9 (twice a week), in which case it’s more like 9.45. Sometimes he chooses to go to bed earlier if he’s tired.

He gets up at 7am on the dot regardless what time he goes to bed. That is, unless he’s got morning training (once a week) then I wake him at 6.

My 19 year old goes to bed... well, who knows? Usually after me anyway.

BiscuitDrama · 07/06/2019 09:33

Depends how much sleep they need and so also what time they get up. Are you having to wake them in the morning?
We pushed our nine yr old’s time back a bit when she was having problems getting to sleep.

Crunchymum · 07/06/2019 09:49

This time of year (even with blackout curtains / blinds), I'm hard pushed to get my 6yo and 4yo down before 9pm.

6yo has a solid 10 hours, 11 at weekends. 4yo has never needed as much sleep and isn't the best sleeper. She often wakens in the night comes in with us

She will occasionally succumb to the odd nap after school or weekend afternoon if we're home but that isn't often. She takes after me, I'm an awful sleeper.

17mo sleeps 8pm-6am and a solid 1h nap in the day

AxCap · 07/06/2019 11:06

4.5 year old goes to bed between 7 and 730, although closer to 730 in the past few months. Sometimes we hear him chatting/playing with cuddly toys in bed after 8 and other times he's sound asleep straight away. Up between 7 and 8 generally.

1 year old in bed and straight asleep at 7. Wakes up between 630 and 8, probably 7 on average.

TokyoSushi · 07/06/2019 11:09

6 & 8 year old, lights out for around 8:15 on a school night and 9ish at weekends/holidays. We're lucky that they're pretty good going to bed so we don't have to have an overly strict routine.

sugarbum · 07/06/2019 11:40

Its more about the hours they get and quality of sleep than bedtime, and also families needs.sleepcouncil.org.uk/how-much-sleep-do-we-need/
fwiw our 9 year old has light out at 8.30 pm on a school night. He is always up 6.30 ish. He conks out quite quickly.
our 12 year old has lights out 9-9.30 ish. He finds it hard to fall asleep and I have to wake him for school every day.

Shodan · 07/06/2019 11:45

11 year old ds is in bed by 9pm, lights out by 9.30. He has mentioned that some kids in his class go to bed later, but I think 9.30 is late enough on a school night for someone who gets up at 6.30 am.

Weekends/holidays are far more relaxed, but still no later than 10.30 lights out I'd say.

purplereindeer · 07/06/2019 14:03

Mine go to bed really early, but are allowed to read for as long as they like. We have to be up at 6.30am.

7yo goes at 7, usually asleep before 7.30.
10yo goes at 7.30, asleep by 8.30.
12yo goes at 8.30, reads manga until 10.

When I was a teen, I had to be ready for bed and in my room by 9pm, but I didn't have lights out etc.
