Anyone remember this? Puffin books.

Primary school early 80s. We used to get Puffin Books leaflets to take home. I seem to remember they were massive but they were probably quite small.

I spent hours poring over it as I was allowed to choose one book. Then it would feel like months went by until the 'office lady' would arrive with a huge pile books and they'd sit on the teachers desk until she handed them out at home time. It was so exciting.

I remember getting 'The Worst Witch' and 'Stories for 9 year olds' which (I think) had The Necklace of Raindrops in it.

My children's school did similar with 'The Book People' but I don't think they ever reached the same level if excitement as I did with Puffin Books Smile

Yup. Happy days.

I don't recall the Puffin leaflets, sorry, but I although I now do some school library work I was in academic and industrial libraries for many years.

When we were kids my not-at-all-well-off parents used to put a tiny sum aside each week for books and I fondly remember the agony/delight of holding out for a Puffin rather than settling for a cheaper Ladybird book a couple of week sooner.

Although I appreciate them very much I'm always a tiny bit sad that parents donate their kids' books to the school as soon as they are deemed outgrown. My remaining childhood books are among my most precious possessions.

I remember the leaflets, I used to love looking through them but I was never allowed any because we couldn't afford it Sad I had to settle for the library. I remember being very envious when some kids would get their order through. Piles of lovely new books 😍

Knittedfairies · 04/06/2019 09:57

I was teaching in the early 80's; my class loved 'A Necklace of Raindrops'. I've still got my copy, which is falling apart.

JudgeRindersMinder · 04/06/2019 09:58

I was in the Puffin Club, I had a badge and everything!

maslinpan · 04/06/2019 10:01

I got Puffin Post for a few years and treasured every single copy. I really loved the illustrations by Jill MacDonald and the reader's letters page

MarthasGinYard · 04/06/2019 10:04

I remember Op

Those big colour pamphlets

Heaven

Also remember some kind of book club at junior school where we bought some kind of stamps and it took months to save enough for a book.

SoupDragon · 04/06/2019 10:12

I remember them too. I know I got a few books from them but the one I remember is "Heritage of the Star" by Sylvia Engdahl. I was beyond happy to discover in my adult years that it was the first of a trilogy.

Nousernameforme · 04/06/2019 10:44

We had a book fair where all the books would be out in the dining hall and you could go and look after school.
I do remember necklace of raindrops I got a copy off eBay a few years back. I will have to dig that out again.

Skyejuly · 04/06/2019 10:46

I used to love flicking through

Bezalelle · 04/06/2019 10:47

I remember the books sitting on the teacher's desk waiting to be handed out at home time! The anticipation was almost painful!

My primary school also had a scheme where you could order large photographs of birds of prey. I got the eagle and the snowy owl.

thislido · 04/06/2019 10:59

Yes! We were allowed one, too, and I think I also got my copy of the Worst Witch that way!

BooksAreMyOnlyFriends · 04/06/2019 12:17

The school library was good. I can remember a waiting list to take out a book called 'The biggest joke book in the world' or something like that.

We also had a mobile library that came to our village on Thursdays at 4pm. That was always dead exciting too Smile.

I remember the leaflet too. Loved looking at all the books in it but sadly wasn’t allowed to buy any and had to use the library instead. Was so envious of friends who ordered books regularly 😞

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 04/06/2019 17:05

Yes. We all got Goodnight Mr Tom from it when I was in about y6 aka the fourth year. It caused a sensation.
I think when I was in the first year I got Lorna Doone. I remember showing off its lack of pictures.

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 04/06/2019 17:07

Yes! I had forgotten about these leaflets, but now you have said it, I remember them so fondly. Thank you for reminding me.

ChopinIn10Minuets · 04/06/2019 17:23

My copy of The House in Norham Gardens was bought this way. I still re-read it.

mononokeswolf · 04/06/2019 17:53

Yes, I can still recall the lovely new book smell of those puffin books Smile, what a happy memory you have brought up for me OP, thank you!

Asta19 · 04/06/2019 17:59

I was another who was allowed one book each time. It was such a highlight and so exciting! To this day I still love going and buying a brand new book. I have loads on kobo now but you can't beat the real thing.

Geraniumpink · 04/06/2019 18:08

Proud puffin club member! I still have the magazines stashed under my bed. They are incredibly nostalgic.

Smidge001 · 04/06/2019 18:12

Me too. I was a puffin book club member. I still have a postcard from them after I sent them a picture, where they said it made them 'flap their wings' Grin. I loved it.

ScreamingValenta · 04/06/2019 18:16

I was in the Puffin Club until it changed to be a schools thing. They wrote to everyone suggesting they ask their school to join up - I wouldn't have dreamt of doing anything so forward, though.

I did win a couple of prizes (books) which I still have, and I had a book review published in the magazine too.
