Anyone remember this? Puffin books.

Primary school early 80s. We used to get Puffin Books leaflets to take home. I seem to remember they were massive but they were probably quite small.

I spent hours poring over it as I was allowed to choose one book. Then it would feel like months went by until the 'office lady' would arrive with a huge pile books and they'd sit on the teachers desk until she handed them out at home time. It was so exciting.

I remember getting 'The Worst Witch' and 'Stories for 9 year olds' which (I think) had The Necklace of Raindrops in it.

My children's school did similar with 'The Book People' but I don't think they ever reached the same level if excitement as I did with Puffin Books Smile

I had completely forgotten about this! I used to love reading and rereading the booklet deciding which book to choose. It was always so exciting seeing the school secretary bring the books in to the classroom to be given out at the end of the day.
My children's school have 'the book people' sometimes. It doesn't seem to generate the same excitement at all. Perhaps Amazon has killed this as you don't have to wait, it can be delivered the next day.

We used to have book fairs. I loved them!

I had forgotten about this but YES! I loved choosing one book and ticking the box next to it, books were my favourite thing in the world. My favourite from Puffin Club was a book about looking after insects.

Also simply that kids have far more books bought for them than we did.
Despite the fact that they also have electronic devices, multiple TV channels and e books, more physical children's books are sold than ever before.

I hadn't thought about that in years! I can still recall the thrill of seeing the pile and the worry you'd not chosen the right one.

In Y7 (then primary went to y7) I was the school Librarian and had to re-arrange all the index cards and reshelve and check in and out all the books. Quite a lot of responsibility for an 11-year-old. I think they were trying to keep me busy!

Oh my eldest (y1) had the "book bus" a few weeks ago, it was book people, he was insanely excited and came home with the book he had bought most proud.

Yes I remember. It would have been late 70s. I'm 50 now. I was also in the Puffin club.

I remember this, had the badge which is probably somewhere in my dm house, along with my blue peter badge!
My ds’s school still has book fairs a couple of times a year, and I love having a look around.
I have a few of Jan’s books, lovely illustrations , and bought Meg and Mog for my DS.

God yes! I got Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and The Worst Witch.

We still have a mobile library locally, it always gives me a wave of nostalgia for the one that used to come and park up in the playground at Primary school. We also had one in our village so much excitement when they came round.

Badwifey · 04/06/2019 18:40

Yes I remember these. I used to look over it for hours too.

In Ireland we could also order a once a year Irish publication called Spraoi. It was great. Highlight of the year!!

Bluetrews25 · 04/06/2019 18:45

Puffin club member here, too.
No apologies for boasting - had a few poems published (and got 50p for each one!) and also won a few competitions, one notably judged by Ted Hughes.
Happy Days!
