what IS "streaming music" and why can't I figure it out?

I like CDs. I know where I am with a CD.

The kids have music on their phones, using up storage and then their phones don't work and I can't get hold of them and it drives me mad because what use is a phone that you can't phone on? What they need is a walkman AND a phone - but they refuse to see the sense in this.

I hear that you can get spotify for a family - an then play it though a speaker and keep playlist on your phone. I have some music (like 6 songs I needed for work stuff) stored on my phone and don't like the apple music app because it's not a CD.

I need to have music on my C25K app or I'll give it up.

I've honestly tried to understand - but, as far as I can tell, as soon as I think I've got it figured out there's a new system.

So, what do you, and will you please tell me so I can copy you?
TIA

You download a specific app to your device. Having paid a subscription, either the music can be downloaded to be listened to later (DD does this) or you can listen over WiFi/data (which is streaming). You get to set up playlists, lists of favourites, and many systems will set up suggestion lists (which many be streamed). You can browse for music you like by artist, band, song title, etc.

I use Deezer. Spotify is more common but one of my workplaces bans it. Someone at work has Amazon music streaming.

I use Deezer, which is similar to Spotify. You can get a free version but I pay £9.99 per month so I can download songs to listen to offline, as well as stream music with no adverts, I love it!

This makes no sense by the way! Space being used by songs on a phone doesn’t affect the phone working at all! I think you might be being told tall tales...

Spotify family account £15 p/m.
Download app to phone, computer, iPad etc. It'll also play through Amazon Alexa and Google Home.
You're all individuals so I dont have to listen to my DHs taste in music.
You can either stream directly (on your phone this will use data when you're out and about, or you can use wifi). Or you can download albums or single songs.
Spotify also learns what you like and will recommend stuff.
You can make playlists and it has podcasts.

You can get spotify for free but you have adverts and you can't download music.

That's the thing - no adverts. We've got a long car journey coming up for summer holiday and they want to make up a play list.

I feel like douglas Adams got it right:
"Anything invented after you're thirty-five is against the natural order of things.”

I like CDs. But, they don't work with C25k.

DD insists she can't put any more useful apps on her phone due to space (true). She says that's b/c she needs a phone upgrade & We say that's due to her not deleting a zillion photos of people she's not even friends with any more.

lljkk · 03/06/2019 20:19

Our family account (Deezer) also costs £15/month; DD & I have different profiles so different playlists. I'm not actually that into KPOP. :)

vivariumvivariumsvivaria · 03/06/2019 20:20

So, do you all have a docker thingie that you put your phone in to play music in the house? Instead of a sensible and familiar CD?

Because, I think I can play podcasts through the phone instead of through the laptop whcih got covered in ragu one time I was listening to women's hour whilst cooking which is not ideal

One of my phones has a full memory... still works as a phone, I just can’t put anymore apps or take photos...

Lellochip · 03/06/2019 20:21

Depending on which c25k app you use, you can use Spotify with that 👍🏻

MustardScreams · 03/06/2019 20:22

You can get a smart speaker which are really good for listening to music on. Google Home or Amazon Echo. They connect to your music app and you just tell it what you want to listen to.

Is that what they told you? Time to techy up mama, they're running rings around you Grin

dementedpixie · 03/06/2019 20:23

You don't need a docking station to play the music at home. We have speakers that work on wifi so we link up via that. We have spotify

tabulahrasa · 03/06/2019 20:23

“So, do you all have a docker thingie that you put your phone in to play music in the house? Instead of a sensible and familiar CD?”

I’ve got a Sonos system, so it uses the WiFi rather than physically docking and I can control it with a phone or computer.

Or you can get little Bluetooth speakers dead cheaply... depends what you want really.

Frenchfancy · 03/06/2019 20:24

Another Deezer user here.

Think of it like a radio station where you get to choose the music. Either you put together a list of the songs you want to listen to, or you find an album, or find somebody else's list (I do this à lot) after à while deezer learns what you like and you can just put flow on, which is like your own personal radio station. Songs deezer knows you like mixed with ones it thinks you will like. You can teach it by liking songs when they come on, or telling deezer you don't like that song and it won't play it again.

megletthesecond · 03/06/2019 20:24

I don't understand either.

I use apple music and buy the odd song for my gym workout playlist. But streaming confuses me, do the song sit in my phone and laptop to be moved to another device or what?

Frenchfancy · 03/06/2019 20:25

I use an aux lead to the CD player to play deezer.

titchy · 03/06/2019 20:26

You can use a speaker docking station. Or a wireless speaker. Or Alexa. Or play through your tv.

Jinglejanglefish · 03/06/2019 20:26

We have a family account. I mainly use Spotify through the internet but download some of my favourites so I can have them if I'm not online.

I don't listen to music that often but i use wireless headphones when running, or at home we cast it through the Google home, before Google home we could do it through the TV or just through our phones. No dockers.

CDs really aren't sensible. I'd rather storage taken up on my phone than storage in my house!

Also don't understand the bit about your children's phones not being able recieve calls because they have music on their phones Blush

Jinglejanglefish · 03/06/2019 20:27

That was mean to be a Confused

Frenchfancy · 03/06/2019 20:28

The song doesn't sit on your phone unless you chose to download a play list for when you have no WiFi. You don't buy or own the songs, that is the beauty of it. You listen to what you want. One day Chopin the next AC-DC the next Cuban jazz. Just type Cuban jazz into the search and click on one of the playlists someone else has taken the time to put together.

tobee · 03/06/2019 20:28

Boo! I don't want iTunes to go! I like having a music library with music I own. Streaming sounds a massive faff. I don't want a subscription. I often don't download stuff for months. I don't want to have to start again. I've moved on from vinyl to cds, to downloads. I feel like me octogenarian parents! 😩

Jinglejanglefish · 03/06/2019 20:28

No, you'll have an online account so you can log in from any device with your details and your music will be there.
