Would you serve lasagna with baked potatoes?

Prompted by a conversation with my parents..

I would serve lasagna (the traditional meat version) with a side salad and possibly garlic bread.
My parents like to serve it with a (large) baked potato. I reckon this is far too much stodge and you shouldn't serve lasagna with baked potato, but my parents reckon they have been to many restaurants that served it thus.

How do you like your lasagna?

A ‘salad’ with curry / chilli is traditional too lol.

IHaveBrilloHair · 03/06/2019 15:26

Yes it is, but I don't hear of many people serving it together, mainly just curry and rice.
Our takeaways mainly send a wee bag of salad or spiced onions free with an order, but most people I know don't eat them, I always do.

An onion / green chilli / horseradish salad or a raw carrot / green pickle is heavenly with curry.

i have it with nothing, garlic bread too stodgy too! maybe green beans or broccoli actually.

mummyhaschangedhername · 03/06/2019 16:05

I do it with salad and often garlic bread/french stick. Although I appreciate that so quite carb heavy.

Cheap two-for-one type restaurants do it with chips or jacket potatoes. I've had vegetarian lasagna with chips before 😂 And garlic bread 😂 it's VERY heavy.

Personally no though. It's nice with salad and the kids like Bread. 😂

0DimSumMum0 · 03/06/2019 16:06

On it's own or with salad

bumblingbovine49 · 03/06/2019 16:07

I've never done lasagna with any sort of bread or chips but these do get served on the side in restaurants/pubs so I am not sure how a jacket potato is that much different from garlic bread tbh

IHaveBrilloHair · 03/06/2019 16:24

I do filled jacket potatoes as a meal, I never think to have plain ones as a side, and even if I did, never with lasagne, maybe steak, or pork chops of similar?

Stillneedwillpower · 03/06/2019 17:49

On it's own, or with a nice salad to cut through the richness.

Heartlake · 03/06/2019 18:45

Is this a 70s thing from when lasagne was considered exotic? My parents do this!

In our house it's just served with salad and garlic bread. Yum!

Bigfanofcheese · 03/06/2019 21:39

My mum does this, without fail. Also she serves pizza with a jacket spud. Maybe it is a 70s thing!!

I never turn this combo down if at hers but if I'm cooking I'd just put a green salad with lasagne.

Ivy44 · 03/06/2019 21:43

With a salad or mixed veg.

When I was younger I used to have lasagne and chips as a hangover lunch.

IHaveBrilloHair · 03/06/2019 21:46

@Bigfanofcheese
That reminds me of my Mum and the "new", supermarket pizzas served with peas and carrots Confused

Weepingwillow5 · 03/06/2019 21:47

Just with salad , maybe a couple of slices of garlic bread for the kids - especially for the one who turns his noise up at Lasagna .

dontticklethetoad · 03/06/2019 21:48

Jacket potato, no.

Homemade vinegrette dressing, yes. It's a hangover from when I was pregnant. I can't eat lasagne without it now.

Tiptopj · 03/06/2019 21:48

My mum always serves lasagne with a jacket potato and side salad and to be fair its actually a nice accompaniment. IMO chips are even better as they soak up some of the cheesy mincey loveliness. Dont know ifs it's actually a thing though as I've never seen it anywhere except my mums house

IHaveBrilloHair · 03/06/2019 21:50

As I got older and wanted takeaway she was fine with it, but insisted on picking it up as the takeaways might do something???
with our address.

Jsmith99 · 03/06/2019 22:08

I can imagine Italians reading this thread and thinking ‘potatoes with lasagna? Mama mia!’

Do their web forums have topics such as “would you serve roast beef with bacon?” Grin

Bigfanofcheese · 04/06/2019 10:11

@BrilloHair bless her!

That was weirdly my favourite at school for a while, slice of pizza and boiled carrots!

Kimchinoodles · 04/06/2019 10:40

I just serve it on its own. But if I had to have a side I'd rather have baked potato then a salad with lasagne, I love salad but just feels weird to me with lasagne.

NoSauce · 04/06/2019 10:44

I serve lasagne with broccoli and garlic bread.

ImMeantToBeWorking · 04/06/2019 10:58

Salad for me!

I would also serve a baked potato with a topping and salad.

MrsPMT · 04/06/2019 11:00

Just with salad, agree baked potato is too much, but I've had lasagna with chips and salad before in a cafe/restaurant, small portion lasagna though.

MrsPMT · 04/06/2019 11:01

Now I fancy lasagna and chips for dinner tonight!

PetrichorRain · 04/06/2019 11:48

I think chips with lasagna is weird enough, let alone a jacket potato. Salad and crusty/garlic bread here.
