Would you serve lasagna with baked potatoes?

Prompted by a conversation with my parents..

I would serve lasagna (the traditional meat version) with a side salad and possibly garlic bread.
My parents like to serve it with a (large) baked potato. I reckon this is far too much stodge and you shouldn't serve lasagna with baked potato, but my parents reckon they have been to many restaurants that served it thus.

How do you like your lasagna?

Lasagne is like any other pasta dish, would you have chips or a jacket potato with your spag Bol? A side salad at most is the way to have it.

I've never seen anywhere serve it with a jacket potato, I'd agree with rhe poster who said your parents made that up to support their weirdness...🤣

mrsm43s · 02/06/2019 17:38

I would serve a largish portion of lasagne with just a green salad.

I might choose to serve it with jacket potato, chips or garlic bread as well as the salad, but if I did so, I would reduce the serving size of lasagne to reflect the fact that it was being served with extra carbs. Mostly I would do this if I had a unexpected extra guest for dinner, so I'd chuck the extra carbs in the oven so that the lasagne could stretch to feed an extra person or two.

ImCaughtinmyShadow · 02/06/2019 17:38

I don't understand serving anything with lasagne. It's a complete meal. If I was serving guests I'd probably do the obligatory salad and bread because it's expected. Wouldn't otherwise.

With chips and salad. I thought that was the gospel

PrincessSarene · 02/06/2019 17:41

My sister used to eat lasagne with chips and garlic bread... and always had a massive carb crash afterwards!

Personally I like it with just a green salad. I think it’s a nice contrast between the cold freshness of the salad and the warm richness of the lasagne. Absolutely no need for extra carbs/bulk.

UniversallyUnchallenged · 02/06/2019 17:41

Potato skins, salad avocado, walnuts (feta and olive) , lots of dressing (garlic, barbecue, and oil olive) and Lidl bread

I’m having that later this week

gatsby2019 · 02/06/2019 17:42

I would have salad, but plenty have it with chips and garlic bread. My dm used to serve boiled potatoes with spag bol!

Whoops75 · 02/06/2019 17:43

Agree baked potato is too much I cook baby potatoes and toss them in garlic butter.

BuffySummerss · 02/06/2019 17:43

Growing up my family always served lasagne with half a jacket potatoe and some salad. It sounds wrong but it's so right!

woollyheart · 02/06/2019 17:44

On its own or just with a green salad. Lasagne is substantial enough!

Unless you haven't enough lasagne, and have to pad it out? Or maybe they have very large appetites and need the extra carbs. I've never had lasagne in a restaurant with baked potatoes on the side....

PinkHeartLovesCake · 02/06/2019 17:45

Depends on my mood Sometimes chips, other times just green beans & broccoli.

Not a fan of salad with it, don’t like salad with hot food. It’s like when a cafe gives you salad with jacket potato & beans 😷

TapasForTwo · 02/06/2019 17:46

"I think it’s a nice contrast between the cold freshness of the salad and the warm richness of the lasagne"

That is it exactly for me. Yum.

Bwekfusth · 02/06/2019 17:46

Lasagna and a baked potato is something I've never seen on the same plate, or something I would ever have thought about serving. However, I'd probably eat it. Lasagna - good, baked potatoes - good.

PotatoesDieInHotCars · 02/06/2019 17:48

I have it with a baked potato sometimes. It depends on the lasagne really. I make mine with only 2 layers of pasta, so it's mostly just mince and potato. I can only eat lasagna with salad if it is cold because warm lettuce is gross Envy

ImCaughtinmyShadow · 02/06/2019 17:48

I hate salad with hot food.

tisonlymeagain · 02/06/2019 17:50

No but totally would with chips. I like a side of carbs with my carbs.

luckylavender · 02/06/2019 17:51

I always serve it on its own.

Megan2018 · 02/06/2019 17:53

Only salad here at home. Have genuinely never seen it in a restaurant with jacket potato! Chips yes, garlic bread yes, salad yes. Anything else is weird.

FudgeBrownie2019 · 02/06/2019 17:53

Our local pub serves lasagne with chips and although I know it's wrong, it's so so right.

At home I just serve it with salad and occasionally garlic bread (which is no different to chips, really).

Nonnymum · 02/06/2019 17:55

No, not with any type of potato, pubs do but I always find it odd because the pasta is doing the job of the potato.

LittleAndOften · 02/06/2019 17:56

Lasagna or lasagne?

overandunder9 · 02/06/2019 17:57

My parents used to do this when I was a child. They’ve gone ‘all exotic’ now and have garlic bread instead. Hmm

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 02/06/2019 17:57

I went for meal once which was brushetta as a starter, the lasagne with garlic bread, salad and jacket potatoes, and I think tiramisu for dessert.

No one touched the potatoes. The carbs were very handy at soaking up the cocktails we drank with the meal though...

lboogy · 02/06/2019 18:01

I never have anything else worth h lasagna. It's very filling in its own already. I had no clue people eat more carbs with it. Might be because I never order it at the restaurant. I always make my own

Lunde · 02/06/2019 18:03

My Mum used to serve Lasagne with baked potatoes and she's been dead for years!

Mind you I caused a stir when I was working in Turin and chose Lasagne and a side salad for my lunch at the staff canteen because my Italian colleagues were adamant that Lasagne is a starter!
