Do Lidl throw your shopping at you like Aldi do?

I'm considering doing a shop at Lidl with my baby and can't face it if they are going to rush me through like they do at Aldi?

OP posts:
Queenbetty · 01/06/2019 23:25

Yes.

Faster · 01/06/2019 23:25

Yep. I just sling it off the checkout into the trolley and then pack at my leisure at the little shelf bit.

TheBluephone · 01/06/2019 23:27

Yes. I still pack it in my own time at the checkout. Admittedly I'm fairly quick but sometimes they have to wait for me. I refuse to be intimidated.

Totaldogsbody · 01/06/2019 23:30

Lidl and Aldi same thing at checkouts. I put my bags in the trolley and pack them as the items come through, you still need to be quick, I tend to put my shopping on the conveyor belt the way I pack it. There's never been a problem doing this and I don't need to waste more time repacking .

Ariela · 01/06/2019 23:31

One of the newest Aldis is very good, don't throw it at all,and always adding/closing checkouts. The other is mediocre, and Lidl far worse.

ExpletiveDelighted · 01/06/2019 23:33

Neither do local to me. You just have to have your bags open and ready so you can keep pace as there is very little space after the till.

switswoo81 · 01/06/2019 23:35

Trolley bags... best investment ever.
I must be the only person on mumsnet who have never had a problem with this. Staff in my local aldi are really nice. Best of all no "charity" packers. Paying for your bags to be packed so a dance troupe can go to America drives me nuts.

jessicawessica · 01/06/2019 23:35

Well I've been in Tesco where they've just thrown my shopping at me. and Asda, so it's not just Aldi and Lidl.
So if you think you're getting better checkout treatment at the big supermarkets......you're not.

GlamGiraffe · 01/06/2019 23:48

Firstly I am a packing ninja and pretty damned fast and orderly, BUT if those aldi assistants try to get whizzy with my stuff I just strike and go slower than you can imagine. I survey my bags. Look at my items, they complain so I say sorry, you've thrown so much stuff at me at once it's not possible to manage, if they get huffy I say I call the manager to help me 😂😂. They are nice to me now. To be fair I can pack2 weeks shopping in order as fast as they scan it normally. It's just the odd psychos you need to keeps eye out for and refuse to be intmidated.take your time.

mathanxiety · 01/06/2019 23:50

In my Aldi (US) you swing your trolley around to the end of the checkout station right beside the cashier and he or she swipes each item, then puts it into your trolley for you. Then you proceed to the packing counter and pack it all in your bags or boxes or whatever.

The cashier has swiped with her left hand and loaded up the trolley with her right.

Swipe with right, fling with left.

I am trying to picture how it all works in the UK and can't.

Topseyt · 01/06/2019 23:50

It is one of the things that puts me off doing very much of my shopping in Aldi.

My right arm is held together with metal plates following a serious break a few years ago and it still causes me some discomfort. It means that I struggle with the speed at the tills if I have more than just a few items.

I also find that the expected speed makes me feel harassed and anxious. I don't like it.

Tesco is much better, especially in stores which have scan and pack.

DontCallMeShitley · 01/06/2019 23:51

Neither of our Lidl stores throw it at you any more.

I once complained to Morrisons because the stuff was thrown so hard it was bruised, battered and squashed. It was a Saturday and they seemed to be employing children who couldn't be bothered.

Ursaminor · 01/06/2019 23:54

My local Aldi don't throw things at you . They always place politely into trolley, so you can pack at your leisure. And they always ask how are you doing! Can't fault them. Love Aldi.

Topseyt · 01/06/2019 23:54

I don't like the packing shelf. I know it is a thing in German supermarket etiquette, but it isn't here and I just want to walk away from the checkout after paying with my shopping already packed.

RubberTreePlant · 02/06/2019 00:10

Do they offer assistance to disabled, elderly and owners of screaming babies?

PickAChew · 02/06/2019 00:13

Nah. They can't keep up with me

PickAChew · 02/06/2019 00:13

Packing shelves aren't new. Even Tesco had them in the 80s.

Lou898 · 02/06/2019 01:28

Never had an issue at mine. I just pack at my speed and if that’s too slow I don’t stress. It’s their problem not mine. Never had them say anything always polite.

Seegull · 02/06/2019 01:42

I personally would go to Aldi. Lidl employ some very ignorant small minded and local parochial bullies where a friend of mine got banned because she told them meat was left on the shopfloor for over 30 minutes. The reply was " Not everyone is vegetarian like you"
When she tried to tell manager about this persons rudeness the manager let her pay for her shopping and banned her.
She had been a good customer.
The staff had been a bit familiar and stalkerish as she is stunning.
She was shocked when they banned her.
Aldi is better. Staff seem slightly more intelligent and amenable..Aldi just built up the road so she went there.
We hope Lidl shuts down soon. Just stand your ground and take the time you need to pack shopping. What is the rationale behind this supposedly money saving feature?

Firefly111 · 02/06/2019 01:46

Lidl are worse than Aldi for that in my opinion! We just had a new Lidl open down the road and I thought I’d try them for my weekly shop last week, it was awful! I’ll be back at Aldi next week.

user27495824 · 02/06/2019 01:47

Nope. Mine doesn't. I do prefer to pack on the side though and take my time.

mathanxiety · 02/06/2019 01:48

Do you not use the packing shelf, Seegull?

The rationale behind putting the groceries in the trolley and customers doing their own packing at the shelf is that more customers can be checked out in less time, long lines don't develop, aisles don't get clogged with queues of trolleys, and Aldi gets the reputation of a place where you can get your week's shopping done in a reasonable amount of time. Also a place where there is good car park turnover so you won't waste time circling around looking for a place. Quick in/quick out = more customers served.

Seegull · 02/06/2019 01:54

I did like some products at Lidl.
However, after the way my friend was treated I don't think they should be allowed to trade in England or anywhere else.

They definitely have something to hide.
Look at their advertising. Very suspect. The staff are terrible and always smell of burning coming from the bakery.
If we have to go to value supermarkets safest is Aldi.

Seegull · 02/06/2019 02:03

Oh yeah. I do just shove it all in my trolly and repack it on shelf.
Just meant that it saving them money, then us but can't be that much.
Helpfulness and customer service costs nothing. Maybe an extra few seconds or minutes. Hardly going to stop the world or cause congestion in the carpark! Especially if the customer is elderly or has young children.
