Do Lidl throw your shopping at you like Aldi do?

I'm considering doing a shop at Lidl with my baby and can't face it if they are going to rush me through like they do at Aldi?

Oh I don't shop at Aldi or Lidl,, but keep hearing about all this quick fire stuff at the checkouts,, why is this ? Can't customers just do as they do when packing, ie slow or quicker whatever..

Starface · 02/06/2019 02:38

Well, neither lidl I go to have a packing shelf. I worried I was being completely useless after the last thread on this. Some staff are quicker than others. A quick "sorry could you just hold on a minute" and they have always been fine, even the slightly pushy ones. This includes when I have been very slow at packing/unpacking whilst heavily pregnant and with baby in sling whilst shopping. In fact today I had a very helpful cashier who jumped up out of her seat to get charcoal out of the trolley, and was thoughtful about my packing process (heavy items on bottom, squashables on top). I do put my bags in the trolley and organise as I go. So be assertive if needed, put bags in trolley and pack as you go work for me.

boxlikeamarchhare · 02/06/2019 04:28

They do at the one near me OP. There is a reason I have only shopped at both Aldi and Lidl once.

Lala4291 · 02/06/2019 06:53

The tills record how fast the items are being scanned and if they don't scan fast enough they get picked up on it by management. The scores are also published on a leaderboard for the rest of the branch to see.

borntobequiet · 02/06/2019 06:59

I’ve never had shopping thrown at me in Aldi, Lidl or anywhere else. I expect Aldi/Lidl to scan quickly, purchases go straight into trolley or basket and then to packing shelf. Staff in my local Aldi are friendly and considerate, don’t visit Lidl enough to comment. While I’m at it I’ll say that in my experience Aldi fruit, veg, meat and bread are as good as or better than those in other retailers.

Conks · 02/06/2019 07:09

Yes. I refuse to shop at them. They’re crap

megletthesecond · 02/06/2019 07:12

Yes. I take an Ikea bag and pretty much sweep it into that. I don't repack at the shelf.
But I never buy fresh food from either of them. Only crisps, pasta etc and cleaning products.

ComeAndDance · 02/06/2019 07:12

Yes Aldi does that, that’s why I’m not shopping there.

Our Lidl never does that. That’s why I shop there. I’ve been going there for years, known the staff there. It feel like going to the little corner shop where everyone is nice to you, smile at you etc....
I’ve never had the issue of things being thrown at you there.

Canone · 02/06/2019 07:15

I love Aldi and Lidl but yes, they both rush the shopping through and I struggle to keep up with 3 small DC with me. They’re always lovely about it though.

The quicker scanning = quicker shopping thing is a joke, however, because there’s only ever one checkout out of 10 or more open, so you still get huge queues. 🙄

ExpletiveDelighted · 02/06/2019 08:16

I don't see the logic of the packing shelf saving time, you might get through the till slightly quicker but the repacking from scratch versus walking straight out of the door will surely take just as long. I don't think I've ever seen anyone use the packing shelf, in fact I think Lidl got rid of theirs, there's just a wall with the parking machine scanners now.

The car parks in both my local Lidl and Aldi are hellish too.

CheddarandCrackers · 02/06/2019 08:32

We pack at the checkout in both Lidl and Aldi, we're usually waiting for things to be scanned tbh! Grin

DCIRozHuntley · 02/06/2019 08:37

I just have a trolley bag and place things on the checkout in roughly the right order (so tins and squash bottles first, bread last). It's never been a problem. If you shop at Aldi / Lidl you pack quickly or use the packing shelf - for me it's worth it for a 30% saving on our weekly shop (plus it takes less than 30 minutes).

sheshootssheimplores · 02/06/2019 08:43

I’ve never found it a problem. They scan, I place it in the trolley. I pay. Then I mooch to the shelf at the back and very lazily p k everything into bags. No sense of urgency at all. I now can’t stand all the nonsense at Tesco or Sainsbury’s tills.

floraloctopus · 02/06/2019 08:44

No, they are much more considerate.

fussychica · 02/06/2019 08:48

It's the lack of open tills that drives me nuts, usually 2 even when queues are halfway down the shop. Just as you are getting somewhere they close it, open another and everyone rushes over and you are back to square one.

I use them both for specific products but try to go in as rarely as possible for this reason.

ItMustBeBedtimeSurely · 02/06/2019 08:49

They're fine. I always pack into my car unless it's raining and then I use the shelf.

It's only a problem if you insist on packing at the tills as you would in Tesco, which just creates stress all round. And holds everyone else up.

Nicpem1982 · 02/06/2019 08:51

Our aldi is quick i have also taken ikea bags or folding crates and packed as items are scanned. I love i can do the shopping in 20 mins

StrongleBerry · 02/06/2019 08:59

I've never noticed a smell of burning from Lidl's bakery.

StrongleBerry · 02/06/2019 09:02

There's still a packing shelf in my local Lidl, which is used, but I often pack this way in other supermarkets too. I have disabilities and find it easier and less stressful if I have a full trolley, to do it that way.

Ticklingcheese · 02/06/2019 09:04

Hi, Scandinavian here. Aldi has had a very hard time here, people don't take to them for some reason. When they have done surveys, the main complaint was the lack of conveyor belts after the till. We were told, we were the only country with issues (too stupid). But guess what, now we have belts after the till, so much nicer and calmer 😀.

gamerchick · 02/06/2019 09:07

It's only a problem if you insist on packing at the tills as you would in Tesco, which just creates stress all round. And holds everyone else up

You will always get at least one arrogant individual who can't join the dots up. If you want to pack at the tills at your own leasure then go somewhere where the prices reflect that.

But no, 'i won't be intimidated' while the entire queue stares at you wankily packing at the till, holding the entire thing up thinking dark violent thoughts. Grin

If you can keep up then fab, if you can't. Pack at the shelf and stop being a knob

I love our Lidl, it's got new self service tills that can actually feel the weight of everything.

origamiunicorn · 02/06/2019 09:11

Yes they do I used to try and pack it at their speed now I do it at my own. They'll soon slow down if it means them slinging products at you goes no quicker.

SilverDapple · 02/06/2019 09:15

@Seegull if we banned every company from trading in the UK on the basis of one complaint from one person in one store there would be nowhere left to shop 🙄 You sound a bit unhinged Confused

I love Lidl and Aldi. Forced to pick a favourite I'd have to go Lidl as the bakery is so excellent.

Agree with a PP that ordering your shopping on the conveyor from heavy to most easily squished is the key to packing quickly at the till 👍

Whatevermission · 02/06/2019 09:18

No Lidl or Aldi I have ever shopped at have done this (probably 6 of each). It's no different to Tesco/Sainsbury's/Asda

Seegull · 02/06/2019 09:29

It takes unhinged to know unhinged!!😁
There is something not quite right about Lidl.
Mark my words.
