Do Lidl throw your shopping at you like Aldi do?

I'm considering doing a shop at Lidl with my baby and can't face it if they are going to rush me through like they do at Aldi?

StrongleBerry · 02/06/2019 09:38

Well, Seegull. My neighbour, Mrs Lovett, assures me that you won't get a better quality pie than one from Lidl. And she should know, She's a supplier.

RebeccaCloud9 · 02/06/2019 09:39

No because our Lidl has self checkouts and aldi are still refusing to keep up!

FookMeFookYou · 02/06/2019 09:45

Yes they do although my local Lidl has self serve checkouts which I use above the manned checkout as I can chuck my own shopping in the bag if I choose to Grin but my local Aldi is new and has manned only. If I've got a small trolley load I put things straight back in the trolley and then pack my bags on the window counter afterwards.

Tesco has become really bad since the plastic bag ban they no longer offer to help you pack and the last few visits I've had to take my own bloody receipt! It really annoys me.

Self serve all the way, where possible

Greedycushionhoarder2 · 02/06/2019 10:20

Our aldi is fine, Lidl was far worse, the checkout operator fling it so hard it kept overshooting the trolley and hitting the floor!

Quellium · 02/06/2019 10:25

Our Lidl has a big moveable divider on the tills, so the packing area at the end of the till can be used by two people at once, they just divert the next customer's shopping to the other half. It is great. No stress.

PigOnStilts · 02/06/2019 10:27

Seegull.....I'm intrigued.....tell me more about the den of sin that is Lidl...
Is Lidl on the Fidl?

Fstar · 02/06/2019 10:33

Not in my one, yes they go fast but there is time to pack and more room to do this at the till. Also the quality of fresh food is so much better, its clear to me they take more care with it than aldi.

TildaKauskumholm · 02/06/2019 10:33

Yes, and I enjoy the challenge! If you put your stuff on the belt in packing order it's not that hard. It used to be that you were meant to chuck everything in the trolley and pack at the packing bench but nobody seems to do that now. It is quite annoying to be waiting when someone is faffing about, looking at each item as if they've never seen it before, then dithering about wondering which bag to put it in. Mind you this can happen at most supermarkets. Finally the surprised face at being expected to pay for the shopping Hmm

Pinkvoid · 02/06/2019 10:44

Its the only thing I dislike about Aldi and Lidl because the price and products are amazing. I just hate the checkout part, feels like I’m on supermarket sweep.

TennisWheels82 · 02/06/2019 11:11

I'm a wheelchair user and can't do a weekly supermarket shop without someone coming with me to help. I've recently been introduced to Lidl and I'm impressed at the prices but not impressed with how they throw your items at you. I can't reach the bottom of the trolley and often take a box from the fruit/veg to pack everything in rather than trying to faff with bags. On more than one occasion myself and my helper have been struggling to deal with fast flying grocery items and other people have asked the cashier to slow down for us. There's one lovely guy who will actually put the items into each bag (my helpers) or box for me, it takes him longer obviously but his care and compassion goes a long way.

caughtinanet · 02/06/2019 11:21

I shop at Aldi and lidl every week, sometimes more than once a week and I have literally never had anyone throw anything at me.

Either you are packing at a snail's pace or you need to speak to the manager, I tend to think people who say this are the problem not the supermarkets who everyone knows keep their costs low by getting you through the tills quickly.

caughtinanet · 02/06/2019 11:27

To the people who think they are oh so clever and edgy to deliberately pack slowly, you're not and everyone behind you thinks you're an arrogant selfish idiot. You're not more important than the rest of us, if you like to pack slowly go to my local Morrisons, they have the slowest till scanners known to man.

pikapikachu · 02/06/2019 11:42

Lidl and Aldi scan fast as the barcodes are printed multiple times on each product where as other brands only usually print it once. The tills record the time taken to serve customers too.

My tips are
Load conveyer belt heavy to light.
Take a plastic crate (like they do in Germany) or Ikea-style trolley bag for speed
Use the packing shelf after paying if you didn't manage to pack everything nicely.

Seegull · 02/06/2019 12:41

Only time will tell. Only time will tell.😂👮

Plus let's just remind ourselves when we are being insulted or harassed or hurried by a Lidl or even Aldi employee.

They would not exist without us.
The customer.

baubled · 02/06/2019 16:36

I might be posting something that's already been said but Aldi staff have targets to hit with how quick they scan.

I tend to play a game with them (in my own head obviously) and try and pack ahead of their scanning, I've never won but I'm pretty close to a draw. 4 big Aldi reusable bags all ready to go in the trolley and put your items on the conveyor in the order you're going to pack!

beanaseireann · 02/06/2019 16:38

I think both of them have got a little better in the throwing things at you department.
Are the cashier being monitored I wonder re their time stats ?

ChoudeBruxelles · 02/06/2019 16:42

You need big bags open and ready in the trolley and you have to organise how you put stuff in the belt (heavy stuff first, all bottles and cans together) then you can pack much more easily straight into your bags.

GRIM72 · 02/06/2019 16:43

I'm not sure what Lidl you guys use, because my one is alot more leisurely at the checkout. Staff even talk to you. I've even had a member of staff offer to take items I've bought to the car for me.

EggysMom · 02/06/2019 16:52

I just accept that the design of the stores is to fit a process of scan item - place item into trolley - pay - wheel trolley over to packing shelf - pack bags. That's the way they designed it to work, so that's the way that I shop when there. I don't try to change the system.

On a different note, somebody else mentioned the 'divider' that you used to see often after supermarket tills, to enable the cashier to start serving a second customer whilst you're still packing yours. Whatever happened to those? I cannot think of any supermarkets near me that still have this type of checkout.

manicmij · 02/06/2019 17:31

In both Lidl and Aldi unless there is no one else in the queue I always just place shopping in trolley then bag up at the bagging area. Clue is in the name and also on the signs. Hate it when folk decide to pack at the checkout. That's why the operators go fast, they don't generally encourage putting stuff into shopping bags all nicely tucked in at the checkout. Ever wondered why there isn't a lot of tils or staff in those stores, they expect you to move away to allow the next customer through.

Den2006 · 02/06/2019 19:22

I work for Aldi, the company policy has changed a lot as the business has grown. Customer service is definitely more of a focus now than speed once was, although staff are still conscious of till speed they are supposed to go at a speed customers are comfortable with. I can of course only speak for our area but I imagine it's been rolled out everywhere. If you are worried just explain to the cashier or ask them to slow down. 🙂

Rm29 · 03/06/2019 01:17

Aldi in Ireland are great they help take shopping out of trolly and even help put it in trolly also the staff are always friendly and helpful and never rush you they talk to you and always remember your face and ask how are you when ur in following week. Will stop what ever they are doing to help you find what ur looking.

OkPedro · 03/06/2019 01:27

Yeah my local aldi in Dublin are great. I’ve never had shopping thrown at me. I’ve been shopping there for 10 years..you have to get used to the fast pace or not shop there
