Blackpool Pleasure Beach, Blimey!!

Now I know the Grand National and Big Dipper have been there since Gods Dog, my own DF who is 85 was recollecting stories of riding them In the 50's and how 'bone shaker' they were then....

But NOTHING can have prepared me for the experience.

And they actually look in parts like old pallets and crates nailed together....

With bits missing!!

Any recollections??

The laughing policeman

SkintAsASkintThing · 30/05/2019 23:51

In defence of the grandnational the bloke who broke his neck had some sort of back / spine issue. So probably wasn't his wisest choice. !

But yes, the rides can be a bit lairy........quite often see paramedics armed with oxygen rescuing people having panic attacks. Grin

piekebab · 30/05/2019 23:51

Anyone remember the Ranger ? It was a big pirate ship that went upside down, was next to the big carousel. Also the old funhouse, went down the death slide with no socks on and burnt the back of my feet !

EskewedBeef · 30/05/2019 23:53

The Steeplechase was like a near death experience. If your thighs slackened their grip for a millisecond you'd have been a goner.

Time40 · 30/05/2019 23:53

I do have dim memory of a pirate ship that went upside down.

I love the idea of riding the Steeplechase in the rain, Marthas. You won't forget that.

I once rode the Cyclone (ancient wooden coaster) at Coney Island as the sky suddenly turned a weird green and then a massive storm exploded. One of my best experiences.

Fevertree · 30/05/2019 23:55

The GN burned down a good few years ago and had been re built so I wonder is the broken neck was before or after the fire.
VALHALLA is one of the best/worst things at Blackpool pleasure Beach

piekebab · 30/05/2019 23:56

The Ranger

Blackpool Pleasure Beach, Blimey!!
NC4Now · 30/05/2019 23:58

Ahh, the death slide in the Fun House, where the staff would literally drop the kids off the edge. They had a trousers only rule but you could get away with putting your jumper on upside down, with your legs down the armholes, if you made the rookie error of wearing a skirt.

'I’ve gone right off the Grand National since all the naturists rode it last month. The thought of all those bare bums all over it makes me shudder more than the ride itself, which is saying something.'

Eeeeeuuuuuu

Now that must have been some spectacle Confused

It's funny, but whilst I was mounted on the ride I was literally looking at all the Semi's that actually back onto the ride thinking, how funny to be viewing this every day whilst popping your wheely bin out.

But Naked riders

Bloody hell

Bet the neighbourhood is yet to recoverx

It's funny, but whilst I was mounted on the ride I was literally looking at all the Semi's...

I had no idea where that was going after the naturists thing Shock

MarthasGinYard · 31/05/2019 00:05

That 'Ranger' looks well scary

Ugh

Can't stand pirate ship type rides they are beyond scary

Not sure if 'clown' still there but many scary type glass cabinets full of bygone characters. Where was clown situated?

MarthasGinYard · 31/05/2019 00:08

Now I had vague recollections of the 'fun house' from the late 70's only tiny then.

Sadly it's gone

Valhalla stands in its place. Didn't get to experience that. It was closed all day Hmm

Don't remember a clown, only the laughing policeman by the fun house

Blackpool Pleasure Beach, Blimey!!
piekebab · 31/05/2019 00:11

Hang on, do you mean this horrible thing ??!

Blackpool Pleasure Beach, Blimey!!
NC4Now · 31/05/2019 00:11

I thought he was a sailor? He was creepy as fuck whatever his occupation.

Persea · 31/05/2019 00:12

I used to love the Black Hole - crazy house music blasting out whilst you’re whizzing around in waltzers in the dark. Awesome!

Time40 · 31/05/2019 00:13

The Steeplechase is on YouTube! Of course it is ... there's no mystery any more; you can find everything on the internet ...

It looks medium-scary. I've just "been on" the GN, too. It looks every bit as wonderful as I remember - just the right level of scary-ness.

I've been on the ghost train, too ... oh dear, and I have found a whole new way of wasting time online.

NC4Now · 31/05/2019 00:16

The Vlack Hole, that’s what I meant, not Space Invader. Was definitely the best ride in the 90s.

MarthasGinYard · 31/05/2019 00:20

Make the Clowns StopShock

Time

I'm also on a Bygone Google fest now too, reading all the 'incidents' and about all the retired rides.

Wish I'd have been on Mouse before it departed 😔

When travelling South on M6 also spied an old roller coaster on the horizon. Just past Charnock Richards services

How bizarre

Apparently was 'Camelot' theme park in Lancashire

Now furiously googling that aswell.

The funhouse burned down more than 20 years ago. If you believe the local conspiracy theorists (my late grandma was a local ) it was whispered that it might have been an inside job because it was said there was no profit in the Funhouse. It was the one ‘ride’ on the PB where, for the price of entry, you could stay as long as you liked and local kids (mine among them when we were staying with grandma) took full advantage of that. This was mid-90s back in the days when there was no Pleasure Beach entrance fee or wristbands and you could actually have a fairly cheap family day out there. Some of the older rides like the Big Dipper and the Ghost Train had seen better days even then.

It’s funny some mentioning locals putting out the bins with the PB backdrop, when the Big One first went up, we’d sit in grandma's back yard a couple of miles away and watch the cars slowly rise up the steep incline to the top and stop and then laugh when we heard the screams as it suddenly set off, took that sickening twist at the top and plunged down the drop.

Nooo I loved the Mouse! Gutted!

thenightsky · 31/05/2019 00:36
