Tell me about your stylish vertical blinds

BillywigSting · 28/05/2019 12:20

Back story - have recently moved house and almost every window is in need of new blinds.

The rub is, I like venetian blinds (though not the dust) and dp is dead set on verticals.

I don't really like vertical blinds, they remind me too much of school and office buildings, and Dr surgeries in the 90s.

Please tell me about /show me your vertical blinds that are less corporate looking and bit more homely.

I'm trying to get my head around the idea of them in the name of fairness and keeping the peace (I have chosen all of the flooring and curtains. Dp is insistant on vertical blinds. I'm choosing the style though).

Do you live in a dolls house?

MrsJBaptiste · 28/05/2019 17:21

Slightly dramatic? Christ, they're fine and this thread is probably making a few people who have vertical blinds feeling a bit shit about it.

RaymondReddington · 28/05/2019 17:24

Yep @MrsJBaptiste Sad

I thought mine looked ok

Roman blinds = people can see in
venetian blinds = dusty. We have them in another room
Net curtain = wouldn't look good in the room

I got grey verticals 😂😂
I had my heart set on white shutters ... however they came in at about 1.6k !!! So many windows here.
So I got verticals as I couldn't afford those at the time (whole house for £300) in grey they match the other houses on my street (NW) and to be honest they do the job ... for now.
They're solely for privacy and I have all my windows dressed with curtains but I don't mind them. They don't look atrocious.

woollyheart · 28/05/2019 17:36

I am surprised at £100 for 6 rooms!

Last time I bought some they were expensive. The components looked good quality and were ok for a few years. But the things fell to bits if anything or anyone touched them.

BillywigSting · 28/05/2019 17:59

@Bluntness colour scheme is sort of scandi style atm, walls are white (having just been replastered) with a chrome feature light in ceiling, chrome curtain pole and silver/grey satin curtains. Doors and floors are oak.

So oak, white and silver/grey.

Rug and couches are red and brown respectively but are yet to be replaced. Couches are covered with a lovely cream throw though

Do you need blinds at all? Won't just curtains do?

What are you hoping the blinds will do? Is it privacy without blocking light? If so what about some modern nets? Or privacy glass? Or window film? Would look better than vertical blinds and he might not hate it as much as the other types of blind.

Don't ask him what about ......... instead, show him gorgeous photos, and if he rejects them ask him to explain why so you can use this to work out what you might be able to agree on.

Don't agree to something you hate. You might have chosen other things but you didn't force something he hates on him. Ask him what he would have done if you'd demanded something dreadful for the floor.

Lexilooo · 28/05/2019 19:15

Lots of ideas here for privacy, loads of designs.

Give a really good quality finish too

Ninkaninus · 28/05/2019 19:17

He wants his home to look like a dentist’s office?

Lost5stone · 28/05/2019 19:22

Can you offer the clean Venetian blinds yourself every week in exchange for not having verticles. I would do that

BillywigSting · 28/05/2019 19:33

I told him I would rather clean them every day (never mind every week) than have to look at verticals but he seems to have his stubborn head on and be determined that all other blinds are of inferior practicality or privacy.

We definitely need something other than curtains or the whole street can see in and would rather not have windowlene on the windows forever!

The one thing we do agree on is no nets.

If I had demanded something hideous for the floor he would have said no and just picked whatever he wanted

He doesn't really seem to care how they look so much as how they function and cost, ie high privacy so no rollers/Romans, easy to fix when they inevitably break (so verticals because weights, chains etc are very cheap and easy to replace) and no shutters because they are too expensive (which tbh they are, and I'm not entirely sure the layout of the rooms would suit them really)

Quellium · 28/05/2019 19:38

We have them (beige) and I really don't like them. I would never choose to have them on purpose. Poor you OP. Grey sounds OK though, if you really have to have them.

Carpetburns · 28/05/2019 19:38

They are hideous. Venetian or Roman are the only way forward....

DramaRamaLlama · 28/05/2019 19:41

Roman blinds would look ridiculous on all of our windows too they're all very big, pretty standard length but very wide

I've got a 5m window with roman blinds in two sections - looks great

crispytata · 28/05/2019 19:45

He is right about privacy, and Venetians with hard floors will be dusty AF. I was forced into having some verticals as a stop gap on my dining room as the locals love nothing more than gawping at me eating my lasagne of an evening. HOWEVER, I am changing them to sheer roller blinds that you can keep down, they let light in and stop lasagne-gawpers in their tracks.

OhDearGodLookAtThisMess · 28/05/2019 19:49

Tell him he's not going to need privacy as you are never going to have sex with him again if he persists with this insane plan.
We have verticals at work and they are forever getting twisted and snarled up.

clucky3 · 28/05/2019 19:54

No such thing as stylish vertical blinds. Can you not show him this thread?

kaytee87 · 28/05/2019 19:57

Why not curtains?

Ninkaninus · 28/05/2019 19:58

You don’t have to have net curtains, you know.

You can get beautiful linen voiles.

kaytee87 · 28/05/2019 20:00

Sorry just noticed this.

What about voiles?

If he's not listening to his own wife why would he listen to a bunch of strange women on the internet? Hmm

Ninkaninus · 28/05/2019 20:03

PaintingOwls · 28/05/2019 20:03
