Tell me about your stylish vertical blinds

BillywigSting · 28/05/2019 12:20

Back story - have recently moved house and almost every window is in need of new blinds.

The rub is, I like venetian blinds (though not the dust) and dp is dead set on verticals.

I don't really like vertical blinds, they remind me too much of school and office buildings, and Dr surgeries in the 90s.

Please tell me about /show me your vertical blinds that are less corporate looking and bit more homely.

I'm trying to get my head around the idea of them in the name of fairness and keeping the peace (I have chosen all of the flooring and curtains. Dp is insistant on vertical blinds. I'm choosing the style though).

stylish vertical blinds
This is an oxymoron. There’s no such thing as stylish vertical blinds! 😂

supertruck · 28/05/2019 15:27

Oh no it's not possible. You can get fabric, sheer, coloured or rattan type ones which may look better close up but still look sad from a distance.

Do you live in one of those 60's houses with the massive floor to ceiling windows?

I live in a new build development, so very overlooked and only one house has vertical blinds. They are a young couple, but he is from up north GrinShe looks stylish, but I am guessing he purchased the blinds Wink?!

Anyway most houses have Venetian blinds. A mix of wooden or metal but mostly white. Some have white shutters ( more expensive.)

Some have those day night blinds. A few have put up plain or patterned frosting on the lower parts of the windows. Not many net curtains.

supertruck · 28/05/2019 15:31

Day night blinds here ... they are like a flat net curtain with plain stripes. You can adjust them so the stripes block out everything. We have them in my office and whilst I can see out it's quite hard to see in with them open.

He just keeps saying he's not changing his mind.

I think I'm not going to win this one Sad

I'd go for Doobigetta's strategy. Just keep pointing out their horribleness. Do not collude. He does sound as horrible as the blinds though.

BitOfFun · 28/05/2019 15:51

Has he seen upside-down roller blinds?

wonkylegs · 28/05/2019 15:57

Sorry - They always look like 90's office blinds, they tend to look cheap although I suspect they aren't

If he won't budge - What about seeing if you can get some slightly larger format ones so they look different pin.it/dmqpqcfkgekmeu or pin.it/7ugoptypxcasia

Or something with a bit of shape pin.it/ont6dlu36d5xjy

BillywigSting · 28/05/2019 16:10

They are pretty cheap, £100 for six windows is the going rate

Daffodil2018 · 28/05/2019 16:14

Ugh, he's being a twat. What a weird hill to die on!

If it was me, I'd be dragging my heels to play for time and keep subtly working on him.

The fact that you are a SAHM should have NOTHING to do with this by the way. His career is possible because of your sacrifice. If anything you should get the final say because you're the one who will be at home all day looking at the bloody windows!!

Andylion · 28/05/2019 16:15

Op, would it help if you told him that I had a friend who worked in the drapery section of a department store, (in Canada) and she said they break easily. This was in the late 1980s, when they were in. Wink

Andylion · 28/05/2019 16:16

Also, I forgot that I briefly lived in an apartment that had them. Because they move vertically, I could never block the sun when it was in my eyes. They are not fit for purpose.

Bluntness100 · 28/05/2019 16:34

Is he going for them because they are so cheap?

I can't think of another reason.

Knowivedonewrong · 28/05/2019 16:37

We have vertical blinds, downstairs in the living room, large bay window. In the sun room at the back where the dogs sleep.
They were upstairs when we moved in 5 yrs ago, but I took them down. I fecking hate the bastards!
They are bastards to clean, faffing around taking them down to clean them. ( do come up well in the washing machine though)
They do give us privacy I'll say that and they block the sun when it rises in front of the house.
All the bloody houses in our close have them.

I will be getting rid when we decorate in the next few weeks. Don't do it OP they are ghastly!

Soola · 28/05/2019 16:38

I’d rather have these cheap ones than clattering naff looking vertical blinds

Bluntness100 · 28/05/2019 16:39

It's probably even worse as he is going for the real cheapo ones.

azulmariposa · 28/05/2019 16:41

I have white lace verticals. They are really pretty. However... they are not easy to clean, they are starting to fall apart, and I can't find anything to replace them so will have the horizontal ones instead.

Bluntness100 · 28/05/2019 16:42

I'm curious though, is he always such a wanker? I usually do all the decor choices in rhe house, as my husband is crap at it and likes my taste. But if he said no, I don't like that, I listen. You have to live with it so it's common to have a veto.

His behaviour is very odd.

PaintingOwls · 28/05/2019 16:42

BillywigSting

Has said I've chosen everything else and he's not changing his mind on this one

Hang on, didn't you say you chose what you chose with this tastes in mind? Does he know this? If so, time to change everything to what you originally would have gone for without considering the appalling tastes of this selfish arsehole!

Foxyloxy1plus1 · 28/05/2019 16:44

Venetian blinds don’t need to be a problem to dust. Go over them with a feather duster and give them a proper dust with an old sock on your hand. Doesn’t take long. Venetians are much more adjustable and way more stylish.

woollyheart · 28/05/2019 16:54

Tell him that you choose with his preferences already accounted for. Whereas he is being pigheaded and going for something that you hate, doesn't work, collects dirt and falls apart as soon as something hits them. Everyone in a home should be allowed allowed a veto to avoid disasters. He's already has his preferences taken into account.

Alternatively just do one room as a trial and hoover up to the blinds a few times. They will soon fall apart.

boxlikeamarchhare · 28/05/2019 16:57

That’s horrid op - so are vertical blinds - stylish vertical blinds = oxymoron.

RaymondReddington · 28/05/2019 16:58

Vertical blinds in a house are never ever okay

Fucking great.

I'll burn my living room down now.

Bluntness100 · 28/05/2019 17:00

Well I think burning your living room down is a bit extreme. She's only referring to blinds, not the whole room.

peachgreen · 28/05/2019 17:01

Crikey. I'm not sure I could stay married to someone so intractable and domineering. Is he often like this?

wonkylegs · 28/05/2019 17:06

If they are £100 for 6 windows - they are going to be of a quality that won't last in the presence of a big sneeze let alone cleaning them or opening them too often
It's a false economy and you will be replacing them sooner rather than later.
