How annoying are hot tubs?

I want to buy one for the garden. But they are quite noisy aren't they? Will I annoy the neighbours? We live in a terrace. What would be acceptable usage do you think?

Majority of brands are amazing - just I beg you do not buy a Lay-Z-Spa hot tub.. you'll see them everywhere. god awful things - I wouldn't bother with any form of inflatable, take hours / days to heat up, uses extreme amount of power, and quite unreliable. I had a wooden one fitted last year and it's brilliant, not a hassle at all as long as you always keep the cover on top when not in use and take care of the water and chlorinate it.. x

BaffledEdna · 28/05/2019 09:04

Someone on here once called them germ soup or something like that. The idea of them makes me queasy after that.

Whatevermission · 28/05/2019 09:06

baffled you have to carefully control chlorine I think?

Human soup comment outs me off a bit!

jellybeanteaparty · 28/05/2019 09:07

Puts not outs

BaffledEdna · 28/05/2019 09:12

Wouldn't that be bad for your skin though? I dunno, the germ soup just makes me feel a bit sick tbh, I mentioned it to DH and he said if you had sex in there then it would be sperm soup.

You know how sometimes you just can't unhear/unread some things? This is one of those for me.

AmIAWeed · 28/05/2019 09:15

To be honest you're aren't usually in one for more than 20 minutes, and I'm guessing you won't have it too close to your neighbors house due to privacy. Some come with in built speakers but it needs to be so loud to hear over the bubbles personally I think it's pointless and would annoy neighbors.
As for human soup, if it's taken care of I don't think it's particularly fair, and unlike a public swimming pool at least you know whose peed in it!!

FlatPackPat · 28/05/2019 09:18

They seem like a waste of money imo.

I can't imagine you would use it enough to warrant the cost and I'd expect a 'good' one to cost £500+. It's probably the kind of thing you think 'I'd use it all the time - even in winter!' But when you actually own it you use it approx 8 times a year, once in winter for 15 mins (after waiting an hour for it to heat). All your mates think it's tacky even though they tell you it's great and the neighbours hate it cos it emits a really low loud humming noise.

But that's just me.

Whatevermission · 28/05/2019 09:19

I'm not bothered about the germ soup. It's only family germs. And I won't be having sex in it!

I don't care what my friends think of it flatpack, they're not invited! 😁 I reckon we'd get enough usage, between me and the kids

How loud/annoying is the hum, is the question?

We have one.. Love it. It’s on a programme which means it’s ready heated for weekends. No germ soup if you get the right balance of ph and chlorine and you empty it every so often. You do need to ensure people don’t wee in it though. Very relaxing. No complaints from neighbours although it is at bottom of garden. Go for it!

Soola · 28/05/2019 09:27

I had the misfortune to get hot tub rash and it was awful.

I got it under both armpits and it spread down the sides of my body and the spots were huge and whilst the sides of my body are fine I’m left with a couple of small puckered pouch like scars in my armpits.

I didn’t even set foot in a hot tub but the GP said it was the same rash.

It took ages to go and two rounds of antibiotics.

I never want to get that again as it was painful and looked disgusting, so I personally wouldn’t go in one unless I was the only person ever using it and not sharing with anyone.

Fabellini · 28/05/2019 09:27

We have one. It’s mainly for my son who is disabled, but sometimes the rest of the family use it too.
I am extremely careful about keeping the water clean and using the right amount of chlorine etc.
It’s situated directly below my bedroom window and I can honestly say that, unless it’s running through it’s filter programme - which we have it set to do for two hours twice a day, I don’t hear it at all, and we have the window open at night just now.
I think the comments about germs and stuff might be relevant if you’re using one at a holiday let or somewhere you can’t be sure if it’s been maintained properly, but i have no worries about the cleanliness of our one.
I also don’t give a hoot what friends or neighbours might think about it - my son loves it and that’s why we have it.

ChoudeBruxelles · 28/05/2019 09:28

We have an inflatable one. Love it. Probably costs £20 a month to run if we are using it a lot (every other day).

It’s not noisy. If we’re sitting in it talking it’s no different to sitting on our patio talking.

Can’t use it when it’s very cold though as the heater can’t keep up.

Was lovely last summer when it was really hot as we set the water temperature really cool.

PollyShelby · 28/05/2019 09:28

They hum and it's annoying as fuck if it's anywhere near the neighbours.

My friend says hers costs £1 a day to heat. She likes it but has it right in the bottom of her garden, away from the neighbours. The humming is loud.

Callmecordelia · 28/05/2019 09:41

You could ask the OP of this thread - www.mumsnet.com/Talk/am_i_being_unreasonable/3565328-about-our-neighbours-inflatable-hot-tub

notapizzaeater · 28/05/2019 09:42

We how've ours directly under a bedroom window, you can't hear the hum unless you stood in front of it.

WhatWouldChristineCagneyDo · 28/05/2019 09:46

My poor Mum has two near her, poor woman. Neighbours on both sides have them.

One is three doors down (so about 100 yards away) and owners have built an open sided brick shed to house it, the other, effecively at the end of her garden (20 yards) has what looks like a scout hut on a plinth. Both have colour changing neon lights and sound systems. These seem to have been constructed with the express intention of amplifying every hummng motor noise, every bubble, every 2am conversation. Poor woman can't open her window on a hot Summers night for the noise. Close the curtains and the light show is like a cheesy disco circa 1987.

She's at her wits end.

bobstersmum · 28/05/2019 09:47

Don't get a sex pond!

RosaWaiting · 28/05/2019 09:52

the world is like a noise competition at the moment

I would say quite loud and it's kind of noise that you can't drown out....

colour changing neon lights!! your poor mother!

24balloons · 28/05/2019 10:00

Thy are definitely noisy and annoying, if you’re the neighbour. Our neighbours had a lazy boy, thankfully it seems to have burst as they don’t have it set up this year. The hum was annoying but ignorable, to a degree. The most annoying aspect was them sitting in it talking to each other which involved screaming to be heard and we could hear the screaming all over our hose & had to close all windows to try and drown them out.
If you’re just going to sit in it and not hold loud conversations it might be ok but I’d site it away from windows.

Whatevermission · 28/05/2019 10:01

soils you got a rash, not from being in a hot tub, so won't go in a hot tub. That's about as illogical as it gets! 😁
