How annoying are hot tubs?

I want to buy one for the garden. But they are quite noisy aren't they? Will I annoy the neighbours? We live in a terrace. What would be acceptable usage do you think?

Eva if that’s a reference to my post, I said that was the only time I could hear any noise...I didn’t say it was loud, or annoying.....because it’s not, it’s just that is the only time there is any discernible noise!
Mind you, for the sake of full disclosure, our one is a brand new, eco friendly, permanent one, not the inflatable kind, and cost a considerable amount of money.
Totally worth it though for the joy it brings my son.
Also, we are fortunate to live in a detached house with no neighbours on one side, and the L shape of our house means the tub is completely out of sight of neighbour on the other side.

We have a lay z spa one which we have had for 5 years now and we love it! Best £400 we have ever spent! Probably chavvy to some but it helps with some of my medical problems.

We have it on decking, but it’s well insulated and have made a insulated thing for the pump so next to no noise only when the bubbles are on which we don’t use that much anyway. Haven’t found it overly expensive to run, about £25 per month. We even used it in the snow it was amazing.

Never had any rashes and keep on top of the chemicals and your fine.

MotherofTerriers · 28/05/2019 10:27

I have one, it isn't that noisy. Apparently the noise is worse if you install onto decking rather than a solid surface like a patio

Soola · 28/05/2019 10:31

@Whatevermission

I didn’t explain my last post properly, sorry.

When I developed the hideous rash I had no idea what it was and made an appointment with my GP.

Upon seeing he immediately asked no if I had been in a hot tub as it was the same rash that he had seen from hot tub users.

Mine actually came from my then young teenage son deciding he would like to shave a bit of bum fluff from his nether regions and he opted to use a razor of mine that was still in use and didn’t tell me and unfortunately that’s how I got the rash.

I only discovered this after my GP asked if I shared a razor with anyone else as that could be how I got the hot tub rash!

My GP told me to steer clear of hot tubs as he frequently saw people with the rash and he considered them very unhygienic.

Whatevermission · 28/05/2019 10:36

We are not , in general, noisy or annoying neighbours so I hope that neighbours wouldn't feel too put out. I intend to use it considerately e.g. not late, or early or for too late or too long at a time

Also, again...I WON'T BE HAVING SEX IN IT!! 🤣

I am hoping it will help with my disability fabellina

Sounds like impetigo soola?

Disco3000 · 28/05/2019 10:39

I can't stomach the idea of a hot tub because of the germs. Sitting surrounded by traces of faeces is not appealing!

trinitybleu · 28/05/2019 10:42

Ours (permanent one) is on decking but properly built and no noise at all. At the far end of the garden so maybe 10m from the house, and but honestly can't hear it at all.

No rashes, just keep the water correctly balanced! No sex 🙄

It gets used more in the winter than the summer, and at least twice a week I'd say. We turn the temp down a couple of degrees for the summer but I love being out there with a cold face or being snowed on :)

Soola · 28/05/2019 10:46

@Whatevermission

No it wasn’t impetigo which I did get once as a teenager and was different.

It was pseudomonas folliculitis which is a skin infection caused by the bacteria Pseudomonas aeruginosa.

HasThisSoddingNameGoneToo · 28/05/2019 10:56

Please save the money and put it towards a detached house where you can do whatever you want without annoying anyone.

If you live in a terrace, it's a pretty un-neighbourly thing to do so all your neighbours will gawp at you in it and make fun of you. What else can they do, other than swelter in their house with all the windows shut to try and drown out the noise?

Whatevermission · 28/05/2019 11:12

🤣

"unless it’s running through it’s filter programme - which we have it set to do for two hours twice a day, I don’t hear it at all..."

So only 4 hours a day of noise...!

Fabellini · 28/05/2019 11:14

@Attache see my last post for clarification...

LoafofSellotape · 28/05/2019 11:18

Sounds like impetigo soola?

No,it's a specific hot tub rash and it really puts me off ever using one tbh!

mummyhaschangedhername · 28/05/2019 11:38

Yeah, Mumsnet is funny about hot tubs 😂

We have one, first year we used it almost everyday, now 3 years on we mostly at weekends, it's not particularly noisy, our neighbours have one anyway so it's not an issue.

We check the chemicals before we go in, we change the water every 3 months, so environmentally it's probably not the best. However, I have two children with autism, they find it very calming, my husband has bad and neck problems and finds it helpful too. It works for us, I understand some don't like them but each to their own.

NewYoiker · 28/05/2019 11:54

@Soola if you didn't go in the hot tub how did. You get hot tub rash?

NewYoiker · 28/05/2019 11:59

Ignore me!

Hmm
managedmis · 28/05/2019 12:02

Ugh

streeeemline · 28/05/2019 12:11

We have one. But we live in a detached house with a garden large enough that it can be situated well away from any neighbours. We aren't seen or heard when using it. The chemicals are tested before each use and it gets serviced regularly. No sex, neon lights or sound systems Grin And its a more eco-friendly permanent one, not one of those hideous cheap inflatable ones.

I wouldn't have one in a terrace.

TSSDNCOP · 28/05/2019 12:13

As with all things, if sited, installed and used in a way that is considerate to neighbours knock yourself out. We live in a terrace where it would be none of those things, so we won’t have one. I also find the way the water splashed on my face very irritating. The opposite of this zen like state others achieve.

Skittlesandbeer · 28/05/2019 12:35

Even if I could get over the ‘human soup’ concerns, there’s another issue.

The idea of relaxing in a hot tub, and the reality are often so different. Sounds all calm and melty-stressy. But actually I get quite uncomfortable after only a few minutes. Sort of menopausal and overwhelmed feeling. Like my body’s internal systems aren’t happy. A hot bath can affect me this way too. I set myself up with all the bubbles, mitts, book, wine- and then hop out after 10 minutes!

A hot tub takes too much work/upkeep and risk to bother with for a short dip every now and then. And I’m too polite to ask friends to please shower beforehand. Blush

alwayscrashinginthesamecar1 · 28/05/2019 12:51

I’m in Oz, so practically every other house in my neighbourhood has one. They are only unhygienic if you don’t look after them. They aren’t noisy either. Although I guess if you lived in a small terrace the hum of the pump might be annoying.

nannytothequeen · 28/05/2019 13:00

My ex H has one at his new pad for him and his lady friend. .. now is that hot tub rash bacteria something that can be bought....? Asking for a friend.
