DD has molluscum contagiosum. Any advice?

DD (13) has a cluster of spots behind her knee on one leg. Been there for months and months. Took her to the GP who confirmed MC and said they'll just go when they're ready.

They're now slowly spreading up her thigh (although not much, a few extra spots maybe).

She's really self conscious about them and won't wear shorts/go swimming/skirts without tights etc. Really difficult with Summer coming.

They do look a bit ghastly although I'd obviously never say that to her Sad There are roughly 20 spots or so.

Any success stories with them? They're showing no signs of going, quite the opposite infact.

Both my DDs had these and thuja tablets and cream worked for them. They had lots and thuja was the only thing that seemed to work.

chipsandgin · 27/05/2019 22:22

We had an awful time with them - really affected DS1 for months then DS2 who was only 2 at the time started with them. Then we discovered this (wildly expensive sadly) & they were gone in a matter of days:

Totally worth it IMO - they are horrible & just spread & last fur years. Good luck!

Yes! Molludab. Recommended here on MN and I bought some for DD who had had it for ages and it getting continuously worse.. the results were amazing. New spots stopped appearing straight away and after a week of using it was pretty much cleared up.
Highly recommend it!

As chipsandgin said. I was going to say days but thought you’d think I was exaggerating but yes literally a few days and worth every penny!

LittleAndOften · 27/05/2019 22:27

Whatever you do don't pop or squeeze them or they spread like wildfire. DS had them as a baby they lasted almost 2 years the went away by themselves.

Cannyjump · 27/05/2019 22:28

Thanks all, I've also heard horror stories about it and am worried they're just not going to shift. Poor DD. As if being a teenager isn't hard enough already!

Molludab sounds promising, I'll give it a go thanks.

Silver spray worked for us

Cannyjump · 27/05/2019 22:29

None of us go near them LittleAndOften, and DD is very mindful when it comes to washing. She's very paranoid about them Sad

That sounds annoying and miserable for her. Two of my dc’s had them but started when they were about 3 so it wasn’t a problem from their point of view. One of them still has a scar where a molluscum got popped, so be gentle with them.
It does pass, but it’s annoying. Make sure she has the details so if anyone comments she can just respond factually if she chooses?

Kazplus2 · 27/05/2019 22:34

Try a course of multi vitamins. We have just about got rid of them now and that's the only change.

eternalfun · 27/05/2019 22:35

We succeeded with fusidic acid on the established ones, and molludab on the new ones. Took about 2-3 weeks.

Our DD has shed loads and couldn’t shift them but this combo worked.

springgreensunshine · 27/05/2019 22:36

Ds has had them for a year. Molludab did nothing for us but I think he wasn't very good about getting it put on. He said it was stingy. If your dd is embarrassed by then she will be better at applying it I guess. Ds is only 7 and doesn't really care.
The last week or so his have all gone really red and angry looking which is supposedly a sign they are starting to go.
It's a horrible thing. I understand why it's not considered serious enough to warrant proper medical treatment but it's really awful.

Helpel · 27/05/2019 22:38

Another vote for molludab. Reluctantly recommended by our gp for our 3 year old, but wouldn't (or couldn't?) prescribe it, so we paid £20+ for tiny amount! However, all spots treated in about 4-5 days then took another week or two to fade away. It was amazing considering she had had them for months and they had only got bigger. She said it stung and we had to bribe with chocolate, but your daughter has 10 years on ours so should be fine!

Hadenoughofitall441 · 27/05/2019 22:43

I had them as a child, mor eon my hands which disappeared when I was about 12, I then got them as an adult on my shins and my dr gave me hydrochortisone cream. Went straight away,

Pissoffbranthebroken · 27/05/2019 22:54

My dc has had them for over a year and they’re getting worse and worse. At the moment a few have quite a large pus head and the whole area is red and sore looking. Doctors say there is nothing they can do and we just have to wait for them to go on their own.

puppylovebaby · 27/05/2019 23:03

Silver spray
Thuja
3 different pro biotics but I can't remember which ones. My DDs disappeared within 2 weeks of taking them....
I did also pop them and remove the white pearl. DD still remembers the agony so maybe it's not the best option!

BusterGonad · 27/05/2019 23:05

@Hadenoughofitall441 are you sure you used hydrocortisone cream? I've never heard that before!

ritzbiscuits · 27/05/2019 23:10

Another molludab vote. We've just used on a nasty cluster of spots under my 5 yo DS arm. They were extremely itchy and sore.

Treated for 2 weeks as leaflet advised and a couple of weeks on they're clearing up and nearly gone.

Well worth trying.

CountryPlumpkin · 27/05/2019 23:11

Use Molludab.

100% effective if you use it as per the instructions. I have two kids who developed molluscum and it worked for us. Don’t wait. Use it now.

soulrunner · 27/05/2019 23:18

Basically anything that prompts an immune response. Squeezing can actually work providing you’re careful to get the waxy core out completely and then use rubbing alcohol. However, molludab is probably easier! In Asia they use ‘beetle juice’ on them but has to be applied by a doctor.

Madonnaslonglostbeautyspot · 28/05/2019 03:52

I’m embarrassed to say this but I am a big fan of dealing with them using tweezers (obviously sterile). My daughter was 3 when she had some (on the right side of her body and a couple around her nose). When the white bit was showing, I would pull it quickly and firmly. There was a tiny bit of bleeding afterwards but it was minimal. I could only do one or two a night so I didn’t disturb her as I did it whilst she was sleeping . I know it was wrong BUT it worked for us. Within a week or so, she was molluscum free. I must stress though you have to be SO careful. I only did this on the advice of someone who had 5 children and who had loved through it 5 times. If you don’t have a steady hand and there is no visible white but, don’t do it!!

Madonnaslonglostbeautyspot · 28/05/2019 03:52

*lived through it! Definitely not loved

Madonnaslonglostbeautyspot · 28/05/2019 03:53

Bit! Not but! 🙈🙈🙈

GreenOranges · 28/05/2019 06:09

My 2 daughters had it at the same time and we tried most things. I don't think anything works for everyone. In the end we found a Dr who scrapped/took them off. They had Emla cream on for an hour and didn't feel a thing. Took him about 2 seconds for each one. And they've never returned.
I think the worst advice we received is to leave them and wait for them to go. They didn't.
Good luck for your DD - they are awful things.

blibblibs · 28/05/2019 06:22

DD has these on both thighs. She's starting swimming at school soon and they are now starting to bother her.
A few have popped and turned red so I think we'll give molludab a go.
