DD has molluscum contagiosum. Any advice?

DD (13) has a cluster of spots behind her knee on one leg. Been there for months and months. Took her to the GP who confirmed MC and said they'll just go when they're ready.

They're now slowly spreading up her thigh (although not much, a few extra spots maybe).

She's really self conscious about them and won't wear shorts/go swimming/skirts without tights etc. Really difficult with Summer coming.

They do look a bit ghastly although I'd obviously never say that to her Sad There are roughly 20 spots or so.

Any success stories with them? They're showing no signs of going, quite the opposite infact.

We had this and it really does seem to be a matter of making the body notice them...

Also its a really good idea to treat them like they are very infectious (they are - and the doctor telling us 'ignore them, they'll go away' was the opposite of helpful). This might mean covering them so tights etc don't spread them up her legs. We had DD wearing tube bandages over her knees/legs so that taking her trousers up and down for the look wasn't risking spreading...

Inertia · 28/05/2019 13:04

Wouldn't recommend leaving them- we were advised to leave them when DD had them, and she had them nearly two years.

I’m really glad you made this thread OP because my daughter has them on the inside of her elbow and they’ve been there over 6 months. The pharmacist told us they get worse and could spread up her whole arm but best to leave them alone even though they can take years to clear up. I had them before and needed to get them frozen off which was rather unpleasant.

Anyway, they’ve now spread to her other elbow. She scratches them without thinking and recently a boy at school noticed them and called them horrible (they’re 6 yo) so since then she’s become really self conscious and talks about how she hates her arms.

Anyway, after reading this we’ve ordered molludab to come tomorrow so fingers ( and elbows) crossed!

Thanks for this thread. All my children have had MC. It was never too bad in my eldest - just behind her knees and little spots - and it did go away by itself. But my younger two are getting loads of infected spots and it’s all over them both. GP has given us fusidic acid which does seem to work once they get infected but it’s been over a year and the new ones keep on coming. I’m going to give Molludab a go as all the GPs we’ve seen have been wait and sees. If Bertrand is right and that it is in fact the only actual outcome then let’s hope it coincides with the purchase of expensive treatment.

The median recovery time for molloscum is about 18 months to two years, with 95% of cases gone in 4 years.

Its monstrous in my opinion.

BusterGonad · 28/05/2019 14:20

I'm going to try to take a photo of my sons so you can advise if you think they are going away. I think they might be but I'm not sure.

BusterGonad · 28/05/2019 14:40

Could it be going????

DD has molluscum contagiosum. Any advice?

“The median recovery time for molloscum is about 18 months to two years, with 95% of cases gone in 4 years.”

And that is whatever you do to them or put on them.

BertrandRussell · 28/05/2019 14:41

Buster- if they are getting red and sore looking then in my experience, yes, they are on the way out.

Isitmybathtimeyet · 28/05/2019 14:43

But more can and do appear. At any one time my children will have emerging ones, tiny innocuous fluid filled ones, red ones and full blown oozing/infected ones. From top to bottom. Poor things.

bliminy · 28/05/2019 14:49

We used Imiquimod on all three of my children and the MC disappeared within a few weeks.

BusterGonad · 28/05/2019 15:35

BertrandRussell I hope so, he's only had them for 2 months but the are so ugly and annoying. I did manage to pop 2 but not enough to empty the sacks/ Pearl

LoafofSellotape · 28/05/2019 15:35

Ds's flared up and then died down again over a year, twice he needed antibiotics, antibiotic cream , Fucidin, Daktort. The GP was useless and hadn't a clue what they were Hmm

Bodicea · 29/05/2019 13:50

My ds and dad have it. Took them to the drs a month ago and she didn’t even seem to know what I was on about. Said just to leave them. My dds have stayed in one area. Ds’s spread like wildfire all over his body. I think this may be due to him having eczema. I am taking him to the drs again as loads are red now. Worried he will get funny looks when we are on holiday.

aprilviolets · 29/05/2019 13:55

the only thing that worked for us was lemon myrtle essential oil.
The molludab made her howl in pain!
The lemon myrtle sorted them out

DonkeyHohtay · 29/05/2019 14:02

My 13 year old had it too. I'd associated it with much younger children so it was a bit of a shock! We haven't treated it at all, and it's got better on its own. I wouldn't try covering it with heavy makeup or anything as the GP said the biggest risk was the spots getting infected.

BogstandardBelle · 29/05/2019 15:00

Molludab here too, after more than a year of trying all the old wives tales.

For established spots, Molludab will make them get very red and inflamed. This is ok but best to cover with a plaster during the day / night - if they burst, they can spread.

FOr little ones, molludab will just dry them up. I used to shine a torch at an angle across DSs thighs, best way to spot the tiny new ones.

This works in under 2 weeks

Wash on leave for a min and wash off

Worked on all three kids

Thank you SO much for this thread. I've been stumped for 18mnths with my 4 year old. Arms, legs, body, fingers 😔

Moludab arrived today so I'll report back on progress (prime is a godsend!)

obviouslymarvellous · 30/05/2019 06:45

This is what we used! Didn't hurt and they went very quickly after suffering for well over 18 months www.hollandandbarrett.com/shop/product/australian-tea-tree-antiseptic-cream-60083079

Itstheprinciple · 30/05/2019 23:12

Another vote for molludab here.

Applesbananaspears · 30/05/2019 23:45

On all of my children I took a sharp needle and took out the core. I did about half a dozen which triggered a response and the rest were gone within a week.

LoafofSellotape · 30/05/2019 23:48

My friend swears by that method too Apples she said she just did the biggest one.

GlitterPixie · 31/05/2019 00:00

I’ve had them for about 7-8 years now usually just one or two at a time thankfully but as soon as one goes another will pop up somewhere Sad they were a lot worse about 5 years ago in clusters but they’ve faded away thankfully. My GP said the virus stays in your system and can flare up again anytime

Myfoolishboatisleaning · 31/05/2019 00:12

I also used tweezers, I thought that was common advice. They went immediately
